WATAN (2.05 Newmarket, 0.5pts each-way 9/1)
Jash has questions to answer but he and Summerghand will be rightly popular but WATAN has been overlooked and given he wasn’t granted the clearest of runs behind today’s favourite at Goodwood last time, he looks value to reverse that form at a double-figure price.
He finished out that race on the bridle beaten just 4 lengths and although 5lb worse off at the weights with Summerghand, the return to the undulations of Newmarket is a positive.
His best efforts have come over 6f and his form in just the four attempts looks strong and there is a nagging feeling that he has a bigger performance in him. He and Jash were only separated by a neck on the Rowley Mile here as a three-year-old and his three runs since then have yet to get to the bottom of him and after a promising reappearance effort it’s easy to forgive his latest run.

LE DON DE VIE (2.40, 2pts win 7/2)
LE DON DE VIE makes the most appeal in this field given the rain-softened ground is likely to hinder favourite Desert Encounter and he should be able to reverse the Goodwood form with that one given he was the unlucky loser in the Queen’s Plate at Glorious Goodwood.
That form would hold Alounak and Communique, and with Sextant desperately in need of fast ground to be at his best, that leaves the recently gelded Floating Artist who has questions to answer back at this trip.
The selection is only a four-year-old and is rapidly improving this term and was in desperate need of the run at Ascot on seasonal return. He then did excellently at Haydock when fourth beaten 3¾ lengths off a mark of 101 as he made his move earlier than ideal off a slow gallop from an unpromising position.
Connections have always thought highly of him and he is worth siding with at the prices to overhaul the old guard at this level.

FOX VARDY (3.20 – Newmarket, 1pt win 9/4)
The ground shouldn’t be an issue for FOX VARDY, who has always given the impression that he would end up over this trip and it looks a good move by connections given his performance at Goodwood recently when very strong through the line.
I was on the July course last season when he disappointed when finishing second last year and he screamed that he wanted further than the 1m4f on that occasion. He looks to have grown up this term and still has improvement in him and this trip could unlock his potential. He is likely to be featuring in the top staying events later in the year.

ROSA GOLD (4.30 Newmarket, 1pt win SP)
Again the ground is an unknown for ROSA GOLD but she is a rapidly improving filly and, despite a 10lb rise in the handicap for her latest easy success, she looks one to keep on the right side of if her closing three-furlong sectionals at Thirsk are anything to go by.
Her time figure from three furlongs to the finish line was only bettered by Montather (94) on the entire card, including that of Ilaraab and Magnetised, with the former winning on Thursday off a handicap mark of 84.
Given her overall time figure was quicker, a mark of 79 should be well within reach and at the prices it’s worth chancing she handles conditions.

ASTROMAN (3.50 Windsor, 1.5pts each-way 6/1)
ASTROMAN ran a blinder when stepped up to this trip for the first time at Haydock in a better race than the one he runs in today and was unlucky when denied a clear run on the inside rail after being on the sharp end of the pace throughout.
He finished strongly in the closing stages, chasing down two that had a clear run down the outside and that pair brought strong previous form into the race. There is a form line through the eighth, Union Spirit, which holds a few of these on that run and given this trip is very likely to see him improve again he rates a confident bet.
Birthed in stall 2 to gain a prominent position on the front end there shouldn’t be any traffic issues this time. He has only had three starts in handicap company (two over a trip too short) and he is already a winner off a 3lb lower mark. Over this correct trip he looks ahead of the handicapper.

CELTIC ART (3.00 Goodwood, 1pt win 5/1)
CELTIC ART has always looked capable of better and given his Dam was an improver for this sort of trip and his recent run here suggesting a sterner test of stamina is needed this step up to 1m6f looks a good move by connections. He should have no problems with the heavy ground after running a solid race in France last year on a similar surface and he might just be a little bit fresher than the favourite Subjectivist who has had five highly competitive races already this term. He looks the class act in this field and his two-year-old form is rock solid but he is also entitled to improve for the reappearance run last month so he ticks plenty of boxes at the prices.
