MAJOR JUMBO (1.50 Newcastle, 1pt each-way 6/1)

There is a bit of value to be had in this market and MAJOR JUMBO returned with an excellent effort behind Far Above at Newmarket and this step back up to 6f should suit him well.

Over this trip he has form figures of 0719221023 since 2018. The zero (14th beaten 4 lengths) came in the Ayr Gold Cup off top weight and the seven and nine both in Group 1 events. Outside of the above his figures read 1221023 since 2018. In the most recent of those he bumped into the very smart Invincible Army twice, while finishing clear of the remainder in Listed and Group 2 events.

He is 2-4 on the all-weather with two second-place finishes to add including running at this course with figures of 1 and 2. He should be left alone on the front end of the pace with very little likely to try and make the running

DREAM SHOT (1.50 Newcastle, 1pt each-way 20/1)

Dream Shot is wildly overpriced given he has shaped like the step up to 6f is what he wants on multiple occasions and has excuses for the times he has run at the trip. At Goodwood early in his career, he was denied a run and got no cover on the wide outside when beaten 6 lengths by Golden Horde.

He won over the trip at Chelsmford in a much lesser race and was tried again on season return this year. He can take a step forward from that run over this trip and gets a 7lb weight allowance here. Three-year-olds have a record of 2/13 in the last ten years with a further two seconds and one third with an each-way strike rate of 38%. Given there are questions to answer at the top of the market for many, he looks a good each way value bet at the prices.

ON THE WARPATH (2.40 Newmarket, 0.5pts each-way 15/2)

This is a tricky race but William Buick rarely gets it wrongwhen choosing between the two Godolphin runners and he has chosen ON THE WARPATH who looks overpriced at the odds. H

e is worse off at the weights with stable mate Mubtasim on their meeting in Meydan and here last year, but gives the impression that he has more improvement in him than that one and is selected to come out on top.

He outstayed his stablemate when they met last year in Meydan and there looks to be plenty of pace on in this race today which can suit. Limato has an excellent record here at Newmarket and rates a danger should he retain his ability.

ROUSAYAN (2.50 Redcar, 0.5pts each-way 17/2)

This might go to ROUSAYAN who was unsuited by the slow going at Doncaster recently but showed up well behind an improver who was given a 12lb rise. He did the best of the rest putting clear daylight between him and the remainder of the field, three of whom oppose today. This is a slight drop in class and he sits just 1lb above his last winning mark with connections booking Graham Lee who is 2/12 +£21 to a £1 level stake for this trainer.

VIRGIN SNOW (3.00 Newcastle, 1pt win 9/2)

VIRGIN SNOW was a winning selection for this column two weeks ago and she looked a filly to follow with a good opportunity to get some black type. The favourite is potentially smart but she has been off the track for 401 days and just might need this. On the figures, Virgin Snow comes out ahead on a mark of 105 due to the hefty weight allowance of 12lb all round. She’s promising and certainly has more to come.

CAMAHAWK (3.25 Redcar, 0.5pts each-way 14/1)

CAMAHAWK is bred to be better than this opening mark and more can be expected now venturing into handicaps off a mark of 73. Trainer Tim Easterby likes this family and was successful with his half brother and smart hurdler Hawk High.

The selection has shown glimpses of promise in his three starts to date including when in front of today’s favourite on debut. He travelled with purpose on return this year before his run petered out after travelling wide around the home bend and being bumped inside the final furlong. That race looks like it might work out extremely well and he is worth siding with in this open contest.

HENLEY (4.35 Redcar, 1.5pts each-way 16/1)

This is another race where it is worth playing twice. HENLEY has dropped down to a mark of 62 after being rated as high as 81 this time last season but is unexposed over 6f yielding with figures of 7, 13, 3, and 4 since 2018. Those runs came off marks of 81, 89, 83, and 79 in class 4 company and he hasn’t run over this trip prior to his reappearance.

He was value for much more than his fifth on return over 6f when running alone on the unfavoured part of the track at Thirsk. That was a career-first attempt in class 6 company and with that run likely to blow away any cobwebs he now looks ready to strike and is my best bet on the Redcar card.

LEO MINOR (4.35 Redcar, 0.5pts each-way 28/1)

Leo Minor caught the eye on return at Thirsk on third run for his new trainer when denied a clear run and is another who hasn’t had many goes at this trip on turf with form figures of 7 and 1.

He also takes a drop into class 6 company for the first time on turf and could still have more to offer. It’s possible he was being handicapped on the all-weather where he is now 0-13 and has been dropped 7lb in three runs for this trainer alone. His last turf start before his eye catching return came off 67 in September (6 runs ago) and he now races off 61.
