2025 December Gold Cup Racecard

A fine winner of the Plate Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, Jagwar is set to make his seasonal reappearance here, but the fast-improving six-year-old will have a 9lbs higher mark to deal with in this contest. Another emerging talent over fences is the Sam Thomas-trained Vincenzo, who was a fine runner-up behind Panic Attack in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November, and the seven-year-old will have a 2lbs rise to contender with here. Il Ridoto is a regular in these sort of events and has a Paddy Power Gold Cup win on his CV, but he struggled in that race last time out. Hoe Joly Smoke ran a stormer when third in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and will be looking to improve on that effort for Dan Skelton, whilst the likes of the top-weighted Ga Law and Grand Sefton winner Colonel Harry add more depth to the race.

One of the most exciting handicap chases in the first part of the National Hunt season, the December Gold Cup is a race that has attracted some quality winners down the years. We look back at the race in recent times and pick out some of the key trends and stats that could help you find the winner!

December Gold Cup Tips

Jagwar has to be respected at the head of the betting, but he may just lack for fitness in the closing stages and could be vulnerable up the hill. The one that can finish ahead of him is Vincenzo, who put up a career best when second in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and he can build on that run for Sam Thomas and claim the victory. Il Ridoto disappointed last month, but has shown he can bounce back around a course he loves, and he could well be the best of the rest in third place.
