The Breeders’ Cup kicks off from Del Mar on Friday night. GG tipster Joe Napier has picked out three selections, including one to upset a Ballydoyle favourite.
11.05 Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf (Grade 1)
There is plenty of evidence to suggest Lake Victoria may be the next big thing out of Ballydoyle, but her draw in stall 1 makes things awkward at the very least in the Juvenile Fillies’ Turf. She might be miles too good, but unlike the majority of turf races at the Breeders’ Cup, this is a race that US trainers have done very well in, claiming nine of the last ten renewals (only Aidan O’Brien has broken the monopoly).
It is notable that the in-running comments have included an opening of “broke well” for THOUGHT PROCESS in her last two starts, and she looks the flagbearer for the hosts here. Despite the majority of the field hailing from US-based yards, there is not necessarily a load of pace in here, and the daughter of high-class American dirt horse Collected looks a decent opposition bet. The US sportsbooks are offering a significantly closer market than on these shores, which make her price look generous.

Wed 30 Oct 202411.45 Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade 1)
There are a few international raiders for the dirt showpiece on Friday, including Ireland’s Hill Road, but it looks best to concentrate on the hosts. East Avenue has looked very useful in his two starts to date, but half the field bring unbeaten records in here, and GAMING could be the one for value.
His sire Game Winner is in his first season with runners, but he defeated the very talented Knicks Go to win this race in 2018 while his dam won as a juvenile for Aidan O’Brien. Both of his wins have come at Del Mar, his stablemate Getaway Car is drawn perfectly to hassle east Avenue on the front end, and he should be leaving his best work until late. The hope is this will prove somewhat of a burn up and favour his likely closing style.
12.25 Del Mar – Pevagen Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
Quite a few superstars look set to do battle over Breeders’ Cup weekend, but this race does not look to contain any. New Century has now proven himself on American shores having beaten Al Qudra at Woodbine, but it’s possible that the strongest form belongs to SEAGULLS ELEVEN, as Hugo Palmer sends a duo across.
The Waco Kid is the shorter price, but his Group race win arrived on soft, while his stablemate has been better on faster ground. That is far more ideal in the US, and he was placed at Group 1 level when third in the National Stakes at the Curragh. He did best of the prominent racers that day as only two closers got by, and he was on the wrong side of the track in an unusual running of the Dewhurst on soft last time. With this being so dominated by British and Irish runners, Luis Saez should be able to position him prominently, and he should have a great chance from there.
