Doncaster, Newbury & Kelso Racing Tips - GG Lucky 15 Tips for Saturday 28 February

The penultimate Saturday before Cheltenham includes six high quality meetings. These include ten races live on ITV on the day.

GG tipster Joe Napier looks to the ITV action on the day for our lucky 15 tips on Saturday. His four selections run across Doncaster, Newbury and Kelso.

Doncaster Racing Tips (Saturday 28 February)

Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Handicap Chase is the highlight on Saturday on Town Moor. We have two selections at the track, including one in the feature.

1.55 Doncaster – Mighty Bandit (1pt win – 15/8)

The progressive Mighty Bandit is distinctly on the up and is comfortably the form candidate here. A talented juvenile at Gordon Elliott’s, it took him a long time to find form for Warren Greatrex. However, that is happening now, with a win on the flat in August only hinting at what was to come over fences. He was second on his chase debut at Newbury, giving 2lb to Grade 2 winner Mamboonumberfive. He was 50/1 that day, but has been nowhere near that since, winning next time out off 129. A 5lb rise then proved insufficient, as he won even easier over this course and distance last month. The eight-length winning margin tells the story and another 8lb bump might not stop him either.

2.30 Doncaster – Destroytheevidence (1pt win – 12/1)

At a decent price, Destroytheevidence looks the value in the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase. He was a more prolific winner over hurdles than he has been over fences. However, it does not appear to be attitude which has held him back since winning on chase debut. He beat Haiti Couleurs that day, conceding 8lb, so he is capable of very good form. He has been second four times since, including at Ludlow in December when beaten just a length off this mark. The step up to 3m2f was likely a wise move at Wincanton, but desperate conditions put paid to any horses but the mudlarks. He faded to third despite running very well for a long way and a 1lb drop to 134 is kind. That can see him contend once again.

Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 28 February)

Newbury’s seven-race card features some top-class fields. It is in the veterans’ chase in which one of our lucky 15 tips races.

3.15 Newbury – Gabbys Cross (1pt win – 9/1)

Nick Scholfield’s new yard has hit a rich vein of form, which can continue with Gabbys Cross. Four of Scholfield’s last seven runners have won and the selection is on a tempting mark. Well-beaten on his first start since joining from Henry De Bromhead, the handicapper dropped him 5lb. That proved too generous, as he was then a close third at Sandown. Despite only losing by a length-and-a-half, he is down another 1lb in the handicap for this veterans’ race. His run over hurdles most recently is forgiven because of the heavy ground. Back over fences, the former Galway festival winner can deliver.

Kelso Racing Tips (Saturday 28 February)

Kelso’s big meeting of the year occurs on Saturday. Featuring the Morebattle Hurdle, it is in the race after the headline contest in which our best bet runs.

3.30 Kelso – Good To Be Alive (1pt win – 3/1)

Preference is for the least exposed runner in Good To Be Alive, whose form stacks up for Olly Murphy. He won on debut for Gordon Elliott last season before falling short in better company. He is also forgiven a poor run at this track on unsuitably good ground in April. For Murphy, he was a close second at Huntingdon, then second behind a handicap blot at Hereford. The five-year-old then got off the mark at Plumpton in January, with the fourth having franked the form since. He took a while to get going that day, but up another 4lb, he has the most upside.
