13:40 – Grace And Dotty Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

A 17-runner Class 6 sprint to start the card, so punters are immediately asked a few awkward questions. There are bits of recent winning form here, but not much solidity. Opal Storm arrives off a win and is entitled to respect, while No Gain and Masterclass are others with fair claims on recent efforts. Trust Sergei heads the market, though his profile is a little frustrating given he keeps threatening without quite putting one away. Draw and track position could matter in a field this size over the minimum trip, and Doncaster’s straight course can punish those who get trapped on the wrong side. It doesn’t look a strong race, but it is a properly trappy handicap where a well-treated sprinter getting the breaks should decide matters.

Top Selections

1. Masterclass – 15/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Rhys Elliott | Trainer: Paul Midgley | Form: 0638-4 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 64

Masterclass makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking certainty. He returned with a perfectly respectable fourth and that reads well enough in this grade, especially as his Topspeed figure of 64 is among the best on offer here. Paul Midgley knows exactly how to place these sharp 5f handicappers, and this one looks poised to strike off a workable mark of 67. He has the pace for this test and, unlike a few of these, comes here looking ready to go rather than needing everything to fall perfectly. At 15/2 he looks a fair price rather than a squeezed one, which only strengthens the case. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Doralee – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: William Pyle | Trainer: David & Nicola Barron | Form: 030-53 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 59

Doralee looks the each-way value in a race where plenty have questions to answer. She has shaped well enough on both runs this season, particularly last time when finishing third, and she now looks ready to cash in if getting a decent tow into the race. Her mark of 65 is manageable, and while she may not have the flashiest profile in the line-up, she has the sort of solid sprint handicap form that often pays in races like this. The Barron yard is never one to ignore with northern sprinters, and 10/1 with five places on offer makes her a sensible each-way punt rather than a wild swing.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Masterclass is the one to be with on the win side, having returned in good order and looking well treated enough for this level. Doralee is the each-way alternative at a double-figure price, with her recent placed form giving her a solid platform. The main dangers are Trust Sergei, if finally delivering on market expectation, and last-time-out winner Opal Storm.

14:15 – Summer Saturday Series Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 6 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper sprint-mile handicap puzzle in all but name, with 7f around Doncaster often rewarding those who travel kindly and can quicken rather than the tearaway front-runners. Wrydcroft arrives on the back of a hat-trick-seeking profile and is the obvious one to beat, but he is not bombproof from a wide stall in a 17-runner cavalry charge. Reginald Charles, Giant and Pearly Squirrel all bring solid recent placed form, while Finn Ironside shaped better than the bare result last time and looks ready to strike. There are plenty with bits and pieces of form, but not many you would call completely trustworthy. That makes this a tricky betting heat rather than a strong race, and value may matter more than reputation.

Top Selections

1. Finn Ironside – 9/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Hollie Doyle | Trainer: Ivan Furtado | Form: 00-904 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 64

He has not been the easiest to catch right, but that latest fourth was a fair step back in the right direction and suggested he is coming to the boil at the right time. Off 78, he is not thrown in, but he is well enough treated if building on that effort, and this looks the sort of big-field 7f handicap where a strong rider can make the difference. Hollie Doyle is an eyecatching booking and stall 7 gives him options rather than forcing his hand. At 9/1, he makes more appeal than some of the shorter ones because there is a sense his best run of the season is still to come. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Reginald Charles – 7/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Geoff Oldroyd | Form: 421-63 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 63

He is becoming expensive to follow if you keep backing him blind, but his profile is solid enough for an each-way play in a race paying five places. His two runs this season have both been perfectly respectable, and the latest third advertised that he remains in form without everything dropping right for him. Draw 16 is not ideal on paper, though big fields here can often split and P J McDonald is the right man to manage that. Off 77, he is competitive in this grade and his consistency counts for plenty in a race full of ifs and buts. The 7/1 is fair for an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Finn Ironside is the win bet at around 9/1 because he looks poised to improve on his latest run and has a rider capable of delivering him late. Reginald Charles makes plenty of sense as the each-way alternative with five places on offer. Wrydcroft is the obvious danger after winning again last time, while Giant and Pearly Squirrel are others to keep onside in calculations.

14:50 – Natural Innovations Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a compact but quite informative novice, with the market understandably focusing on the two unexposed newcomers Moreedd and Glen Nevis against the pair with established form, Bunyola Bay and Deported. Moreedd represents Roger Varian and is the obvious talking horse at the prices, but he does have to justify very short odds on debut in a race where Bunyola Bay already sets a fair standard after shaping well first time up and Deported brings the best official rating to the table. In a six-runner field, tactical pace and professionalism could count for plenty over 7f at Doncaster. It is not the strongest novice you will see, but it is a race with enough depth to make taking odds-on about a debutant far from a formality.

Top Selections

1. Bunyola Bay – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Sean Levey | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 3- | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 31

Bunyola Bay makes plenty of appeal as the solid option against a short-priced newcomer. He showed ability when third on his sole start, and that form gives him a proper platform in a race where only Deported has achieved a little more on paper. Hannon’s three-year-olds often come on nicely from two to three, and Sean Levey is exactly the sort you want in a race that could turn tactical. The 7f should suit and there is every chance he finds the improvement needed to take this. Available at 9/2 in places? No — the standout is 9/4, and that still looks fair enough in a race where experience could count. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Deported – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Ollie Sangster | Form: 423-4 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed:

Deported is the one with the strongest body of form and, in a race lacking depth beyond the principals, that makes him the value alternative. An official mark of 83 is the best in the field and his 423-4 profile says he has been knocking on the door without getting his head in front. The slight concern is whether he has more upside than the unexposed types, but he should be thereabouts again if this turns into a test of know-how rather than raw potential. Tudhope is a major positive and 9/2 is perfectly respectable for a horse with this level of experience and a clear chance of hitting the frame. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Bunyola Bay is the win play because he brings the right blend of existing form and scope for improvement, and he looks the safest betting proposition against an odds-on debutant. Deported is the each-way angle at 9/2, with his rating and race experience giving him a solid chance of making the first two. Moreedd is the obvious danger if fully tuned up first time.

15:25 – Free Bets On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a compact but quite informative 3yo handicap, with the market understandably revolving around the progressive pair Welbury and Silver State. Welbury arrives on the back of a smooth win and is the obvious one to beat if building on that, while Silver State has done little wrong in a busy spell and brings the strongest recent body of form. Toastmaster has been knocking on the door and is another with a fair bit of upside, whereas Booziebrunch could easily outrun his price if stepping forward from his seasonal return. In a seven-runner race the tactical side will matter, but this doesn’t look a deep Class 5 and a touch of improvement from one of the principals should be enough. Tricky enough for punters, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Welbury – 8/5 with William Hill

Jockey: Callum Rodriguez | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 35-1 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 64

Welbury is short enough, but for good reason. He looked the part when getting off the mark last time and the impression was of a colt who had learned plenty from his two juvenile runs. An opening mark of 81 could easily underestimate him if that latest effort is the start of a proper progression curve, and Bethell’s horses are rarely sent south to make up the numbers. The draw in stall 2 is no bad thing over this trip at Doncaster either. At 8/5 he is no giveaway, but in a race lacking depth he still makes the most appeal as the likely improver with more to come. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Booziebrunch – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Muscutt | Trainer: S Woods | Form: 3120-2 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 54

Booziebrunch is the one that interests me at the prices. He returned with a solid second after time away and that run should have sharpened him up nicely for this. His juvenile form suggests he’s capable of being competitive from a mark of 82, and there’s enough in that profile to think seven furlongs on quick ground will suit him well. Muscutt is a positive booking in a race where track position could count for plenty, and stall 3 gives him options. He does need to find a bit against the favourite on bare figures, but 15/2 looks fair for a colt who still has scope and should strip fitter this time. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Welbury is the percentage play and the one to side with for the win, as he looks the most likely improver in a modest enough Class 5. For an each-way punt, Booziebrunch makes more appeal than the shorter-priced Silver State and Toastmaster, especially with just seven runners and three places on offer. Silver State is the obvious danger if his busy, reliable profile holds up again.

16:00 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 5 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a decent little Class 5 rather than a giveaway, with the 3yos getting plenty of weight from the older fillies and mares. That age allowance could easily prove decisive because Myrrh, Oh Yes You Do and Alkumatic Jo Jo all bring some upside, while the exposed older brigade are headed by the like of Percy’s Daydream and Little Miss India. Ablon had been progressing before becoming a non-runner in the betting lists here, so the focus shifts elsewhere. The market is understandably towards the younger horses and that makes sense: this trip on quick ground at Doncaster often rewards those still improving rather than the fully exposed handicapper. Tricky enough, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Oh Yes You Do – 9/2 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Saffie Osborne | Trainer: David Menuisier | Form: 41- | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 44

She appeals as the one with the most natural scope. After a quiet debut she took a clear step forward to win on her second start, and that was enough to earn an opening mark of 78. In this company, with just 8st 8lb to carry, that doesn’t look excessive at all. Menuisier is very capable with fillies who improve from two to three, and Saffie Osborne is a positive booking for a filly who may be ridden with a bit of confidence from stall 7. The opening handicap assignment is the key angle here, and at 9/2 she looks a fair win play rather than a skinny favourite to dodge. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Nanny Park – 20/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Jonny Peate | Trainer: Sara Ender | Form: 53333- | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 64

She’s not flashy, but she is the one at a price who makes some each-way sense. Those figures tell a simple story: consistent, holding her level, and usually thereabouts without quite getting her head in front. An opening mark of 77 for this season doesn’t look beyond her and, unlike a few in here, we have a pretty reliable handle on what she’ll give you. The draw in 8 isn’t ideal, but over 1m2f at Doncaster it’s not a death sentence if she can slot in. At 20/1 with three places on offer, she’s the obvious each-way punt for anyone wanting to play against the shorter-priced improvers. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Oh Yes You Do is the win bet because she’s the progressive 3yo in the line-up and this opening handicap mark gives her room to be better than these. For an each-way alternative, Nanny Park looks overpriced given how regularly she hits the frame. The obvious dangers are Myrrh, another unexposed 3yo, and topweight Percy’s Daydream, who has the form to feature if ready enough first time back.

16:35 – Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a fair novice on paper rather than a deep one, but it is still a race with a bit of shape to it. The Jackal sets the standard among those with experience after a solid debut second, while Bucklow Hill already has a win on the board and is entitled to take another step forward for Charles Hills. Wintercast adds a more intriguing angle as a newcomer from a yard that can ready one, and Masaban and Roy Lane are not without appeal if improving from two to three. In a 15-runner sprint at Doncaster, though, raw pace and professionalism matter, and that tends to favour horses who have already shown they know the job. Tricky enough from a betting angle, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. The Jackal – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Mitchell | Trainer: James Keane | Form: 2 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed:

The Jackal is the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is still the right one. He made a promising start when runner-up on debut, and that bare form leaves him with the best established credentials in the field. An opening mark of 76 tells its own story in a race where plenty are either exposed to a modest level or completely untested. Drawn low in 3, he should get a handy position, and Jack Mitchell is a positive booking for a race likely to be run at a proper clip. At 9/4 he is no giveaway, but he brings the strongest piece of recent form and looks hard to oppose.

Bet: WIN

2. Roy Lane – 8/1 with William Hill

Jockey: Pierre-Louis Jamin | Trainer: K R Burke | Form: 6- | Rating: 63 | Topspeed: 34

Roy Lane is the each-way play because he looks the type to improve a good deal from his juvenile debut. K R Burke’s youngsters often come on markedly for a first run, and this colt was not knocked about when sixth on his only start last term. A rating of 63 does not scream winner in a novice like this, but it does leave room for progress, and 8/1 is a workable price in a race where plenty of these still have questions to answer. He has a middle draw, enough experience to avoid being green, and he looks a more solid each-way punt than some of the flashy debutants.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

The Jackal is the win play on the strength of the best debut form in the line-up and a handy low draw. For an each-way alternative, Roy Lane makes more appeal than most at the prices, especially with Burke’s runners often progressing from two to three. Bucklow Hill is the obvious danger after winning first time, while Wintercast is the unknown quantity to respect if strong in the market.

17:10 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 5 | Going: 7.3) (watering) (rail movements (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary three-year-old handicap rather than a deep one, and that makes it a race where improvement counts for plenty. Brave Leader heads the market, but he is short enough for a colt who still has to prove he’s well treated now stepping into handicap company over this trip. Kiss For An Angel brings solid juvenile form and sets a fair standard, while Madjid is another with scope after just three starts. Tommo’s Ginjaninja has been knocking on the door and shouldn’t be far away again. At the prices, though, this feels more of a punting race than a race to admire: several are unexposed, one or two have already shown their hand, and getting the right balance between potential and value should decide it.

Top Selections

1. Kiss For An Angel – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 2552- | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 60

She makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many arrive with a convincing body of work. That 2552- string reads well enough for this grade, and the Topspeed figure of 60 is the best on offer among these, which matters in a contest lacking standout depth. An opening mark of 75 looks workable rather than harsh, and there’s every chance this extra yardage will suit on her seasonal return. The Fahey yard knows the score with these early three-year-old handicaps, and Shane Gray is a positive booking. At 4/1, she looks the percentage call against a favourite with more to prove. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Cotton Bud – 14/1 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Shaun Lycett | Form: 5442- | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 47

There’s enough here to think Cotton Bud is being underestimated. He signed off last season with a runner-up effort, and while the form figures don’t scream future winner, they do suggest a colt learning his job and edging towards a workable level. A mark of 72 does not look beyond him in this company, and Daniel Tudhope catching the eye in the saddle only adds to the interest. He’s not the flashiest profile in the field, but this is not a race full of hardened certainty either. Available at 14/1, he looks exactly the sort of each-way punt worth chancing in a ten-runner handicap. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kiss For An Angel is the solid win play: she has the most persuasive mix of form and substance in a race full of maybe horses. For an each-way angle, Cotton Bud makes plenty of sense at double-figure odds with Tudhope booked. Brave Leader is the obvious danger if he improves for the trip, while Madjid is another to keep onside if the market speaks in his favour.
