Down Royal & Leicester Racing Tips - GG Lucky 15 Best Bets for Tuesday 20 January

There is a jumps meeting apiece in Britain and Ireland on Tuesday, as well as a brace of all-weather cards for racing fans to get stuck into.

It is the jumps which is the focus of our Lucky 15 best bets on the day though, as Joe Napier picks out two tips each from Down Royal and Leicester for you to follow.

Down Royal Racing Tips (Tuesday 20 January 2026)

Down Royal go racing for the first time since Boxing Day this Tuesday, with our two tips on the card coming from the rated novice races over hurdles and fences.

1.20 Down Royal – Zuzukel (1pt win – 5/2)

He is still yet to win a race on the flat or over hurdles, but his short-head second last time out suggested it will not be long before Zuzukel breaks his duck. The son of Frankel took some time to learn his trade, but all three runs this autumn have hinted that handicap victories are in his future; he was fifth of 22 in an amateur riders’ event at the Curragh over 1m2f on the flat, leading two furlongs out but paying for earlier exertions before a sixth of 25 at that same venue on slower ground when much more amenable. Those two efforts preceded his closest call when second at Punchestown returned to hurdles, with he and the winner pulling nicely clear of the third. That winner has gone in again since and Tony Martin’s charge is only up 4lb and remains at the foot of the weights for this rated contest.

2.50 Down Royal – Splashing Out (1pt win – 12/1)

There are a few in this novices’ handicap chase who are on winnable marks, but the conditions of the race, 2m on a right-handed track, should be ideal to see a better run from Splashing Out. Although she looks the second JP McManus string on jockey bookings, the unpredictable McLaurey could be anything in here, whereas Eoin Griffin’s mare won first time out this season over course and distance, ensuring both her wins so far have come when fresh. However, she has also proved capable of higher quality efforts after a succession of races, with her effort at left-handed Navan too bad to be true last time. She is just 4lb higher than her winning mark from October and still 6lb below what she is rated over hurdles. First-time blinkers may well help her focus on the job at hand too.

Leicester Racing Tips (Tuesday 20 January 2026)

Leicester’s meeting is a condensed one, with just six races contested on Tuesday. We aim to start the card strongly, with our two tips from the track coming in the opening two heats.

1.32 Leicester – Starzand (1pt win – Evs)

Having given weight to a smart horse and only narrowly lost at Ffos Las 12 days ago, Starzand can get back to winning ways for Philip Hobbs & Johnson White. The two-time point-to-point winner won on his hurdles debut at the Welsh venue in October and although that form itself has taken a couple of knocks, he proved he was capable of stepping up a level when going down by less than two lengths under a 7lb winners’ penalty to a well-regarded Dan Skelton horse last time out. The pair were 26 lengths and more ahead of the rest of the field, so while the selection is inadvertently conceding weight to another potentially useful rival in Ubatuba, who has the benefit of Ben Sutton’s 5lb claim, it is Starzand who looks the more likely winner on his profile as a whole.

2.02 Leicester – Jipcot (1pt win – 11/2)

The O’Neills had two winners at the weekend, with their runners generally going well throughout Saturday and Sunday, and Jipcot is fancied to join that revival at Leicester on Tuesday. The seven-year-old looked set to progress right through the ranks when an emphatic winner of a Newbury handicap hurdle last December, though he could not maintain that momentum throughout the season. He was placed next time out at Windsor though off an 8lb higher mark, but subsequent defeats have seen his mark tumble. He demonstrated decent wellbeing at Ayr at the start of January though, finishing third of nine on his return to chasing after an aborted novice season in 2023/24. His jumping was far better when on the pace that day, though it could be that Kielan Woods reverts to more patient tactics which often worked over hurdles. Nevertheless, he will race off just 125 here, 6lb lower than his hurdles mark and only 4lb higher than when victorious at Newbury in such fine style.
