The Punchestown Festival getting underway begins the long farewell to the jumps season in Britain and Ireland. That meeting in the standout, but there is good racing under both codes throughout the afternoon.
GG tipster Joe Napier has two lucky 15 tips at Punchestown, as well as two on the flat at Epsom for you to follow for Tuesday.
Epsom Racing Tips (Tuesday 28 April)
Epsom’s card on Tuesday is rearranged from last week. The high quality card includes the City & Suburban Stakes and Great Metropolitan Handicap, the two races in which our lucky 15 tips run.
3.15 Epsom – Sallaal (1pt win – 9/2)
Dangerman’s form last summer was excellent, but he ran no race on debut. As such, he is opposable on return here, with Sallaal a big threat off top-weight. Though the selection was beaten first time out last season, that was in a strong Listed race at Newmarket. He had won on his two-year-old debut though, while also winning after a 74-day break midway through the previous campaign. The son of Frankel improved nicely in 2025, winning twice at Hamilton over 1m½f. Those wins came on good-to-firm and good and it was possibly in spite of soft ground that he ran so well in third behind subsequent Group 1 winner Cicero’s Gift in a Listed Sandown race. He steps up in trip here after being gelded. However, that is fine on pedigree for this half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Benbat and 1000 Guineas heroine Elmalka.
3.50 Epsom – Asgard’s Captain (1pt win – 11/4)
The four-year-olds Sing Us A Song and Topteam could have the greatest scope for improvement in this line-up. They are up against a horse with good Epsom experience here though in Asgard’s Captain. Two years older than that aforementioned pair, he has form figures of 314 at the Surrey track. The win came by four-and-a-half lengths against ten rivals in this race a year ago. He is 6lb higher now, but won again at York in August off just 2lb lower. He has remained fit this winter in Dubai and may not stop once he gets rolling down Epsom’s cambers.
Punchestown Racing Tips (Tuesday 28 April)
The opening day of he Punchestown Festival takes place on Tuesday. We have one lucky 15 tip apiece in handicap and Grade 1 company.
3.40 Punchestown – Khrisma (1pt win – 6/1)
A terrible jumping error two out put paid to Khrisma’s chance at Kelso last time out. Nevertheless, she was a short-priced favourite that day off top-weight in a handicap and looked very threatening before that error. Her previous run at Market Rasen in February suggests she may be well ahead of the handicapper too. She beat Charisma Cat that day off level weights, with that runner-up easily winning off 124 next time out. Charisma Cat then ran a belter when sixth in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. The selection had that now 132-rated rival well-held at Market Rasen. Khrisma herself runs off just 128 here and Harry Cobden will want to advertise his skills for JP McManus. A British yard won this a year ago and Nicky Henderson can follow suit.
4.15 Punchestown – Sober (1pt win – 6/1)
El Cairos did best of the Irish when fifth in the Supreme at Cheltenham. That form has taken some early knocks since though, whereas the Turners form has been advertised. Although uncompetitive that day, Sober might bounce back here for Willie Mullins. The seven-year-old has not been a natural over his hurdles so far. However, it was noteworthy how well he warmed to the jumping task when winning the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle here in January. He was then swallowed up in the Turners when slowly away under Patrick Mullins. That said, he comes in here retaining potential though and is the Closutton number one. Mullins has won seven of the last eight renewals and Paul Townend gets aboard, with improvement also possible back at 2m.
