14:05 – Weatherbys Racing Bank Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This does not look a deep novice on paper and, frankly, Runman sets a clear standard off the back of a winning debut and a mark of 86. The Gosden colt is officially miles ahead of these and, with Oisin Murphy taking over, he is going to be very hard to oppose if returning in the same mood. The interesting angle is really for second place and each-way players, where Vitality appeals after shaping with promise on debut and receiving plenty of weight. Of the rest, Get Outta Here has a little more substance than most, while the older pair Hengest and Pureis King look up against it on what they have shown. A race where the favourite should win, but the places are less straightforward.

Top Selections

1. Runman – 1/5 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: John & Thady Gosden | Form: 1- | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 73

There is no getting away from the fact that Runman has the standout piece of form in the race. A debut winner who already has an 86 rating and a 73 Topspeed figure is operating at a level this field simply has not matched. He is also a 3yo getting weight from the two exposed 4yos, which only strengthens his position. The Gosdens are hardly in the habit of overfacing one unless they think plenty of him, and Oisin Murphy is an eye-catching booking for a colt who should be able to sit handy and use that class when it matters. At 1/5 he is no betting revelation, but he looks the most solid winner on the card.

Bet: WIN

2. Vitality – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Harry Davies | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 3 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed:

For an each-way play, Vitality makes plenty of sense. He shaped well when third on debut and that bare form gives him a definite edge over most of these outsiders, especially in a race where several have already had chances and achieved very little. A mark of 73 puts him second-best on official figures behind the favourite, and Charlie Johnston’s runners are often straightforward, fit and happy rolling along, which can be a real asset around Epsom. The 13/2 on offer is fair rather than flashy, but in a nine-runner race with three places it looks a sensible each-way punt against a lot of modest opposition.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Runman is the obvious win bet and looks the one with the class edge to justify cramped odds. For those wanting a bit more value, Vitality is the each-way option in a race where only a few make much appeal for the places. Get Outta Here is the main danger to that place angle if taking a step forward second time this year.

14:40 – Betfred Blue Riband Trial Stakes (Listed Race)

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 1 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This looks a small but quite informative Blue Riband, with New Zealand bringing the standout rating and the sort of juvenile Group-race form that makes him the one they all have to beat. Aidan O’Brien’s colt sets the standard on 116 and, if he has trained on, this is an obvious starting point. That said, Epsom is no place for passengers and this track can level things up a touch, especially against less exposed types. Saxon Street is the clear danger after winning on debut for the Gosdens, while Balzac has already shown he stays and arrives on the back of a tidy success. The others need a chunk of improvement, so this feels less a deep Listed race and more a contest between proven class and potential.

Top Selections

1. New Zealand – 8/13 with William Hill

Jockey: Ryan Moore | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: 7145- | Rating: 116 | Topspeed: 94

He is short, but with good reason. A mark of 116 towers over this field and his juvenile form was achieved in much stronger company than most of these have encountered. The bare form string does not scream star, but it is the level he has been contesting that matters, and O’Brien does not send Ryan Moore over for sightseeing. Around Epsom you want quality and balance, and while he still has to prove he has fully trained on at three, this is a marked drop in class on what he showed last season. At odds-on he is hardly a hidden gem, but he is still hard to oppose. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Balzac – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Hollie Doyle | Trainer: Jane Chapple-Hyam | Form: 3-1 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 67

Balzac looks the each-way alternative if you want to take on the obvious one at the prices. He progressed from a promising debut third to get off the mark next time, and that early evidence suggests this 1m2f trip should suit him well enough. A rating of 100 leaves him with work to do against New Zealand, but he is unexposed, drawn well in stall 1 and Hollie Doyle is exactly the type you want for a sharp, tactical race around here. At 6/1 with only six runners he is not bombproof from an each-way perspective, but in terms of finishing second he makes plenty of appeal. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

New Zealand is the straightforward win play and the most likely winner by some margin if he runs to last year’s level. For those looking beyond the favourite, Balzac is the one I would side with as the each-way punt, chiefly because he still has improvement in him and should be suited by the setup. Saxon Street is the obvious danger if the market principals underperform.

15:15 – Lilley Plummer Risks City & Suburban Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 2 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This is a classy little seven-runner handicap and, as these Epsom middle-distance races often are, it looks more tactical than the bare numbers suggest. Sallaal and Dangerman bring the unexposed 4yo angle, while Asmen Warrior is another who could still have more to offer off 113 despite not getting his head in front often enough. Rathgar arrives on the back of a win and gets the inside draw, while Parlando is the battle-hardened older horse who should be running his race again. The track will sort out any pretenders, though, and balance around Tattenham Corner matters plenty over this trip. It is a strong race for the grade rather than a giveaway handicap, and I’d much rather side with the progressive profiles than the exposed ones.

Top Selections

1. Dangerman – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: William Buick | Trainer: John & Thady Gosden | Form: 01139- | Rating: 113 | Topspeed: 100

Dangerman makes plenty of appeal as the one most likely to have another chunk of improvement in him this season. He won twice in succession last year before finishing his campaign in stronger company, and an opening mark of 113 for a 4yo from this yard does not scream handicap blot, but it does suggest there could still be a bit in hand if he has strengthened up. Buick is an eye-catching booking for a track where rhythm matters, and this sort of well-balanced Gosden runner often takes to Epsom better than you’d expect. At 7/2 he is not being missed, but he still looks the percentage call in a race full of solid rather than spectacular rivals. Bet: WIN

2. Asmen Warrior – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kieran Shoemark | Trainer: James Owen | Form: 2262-2 | Rating: 113 | Topspeed: 99

Asmen Warrior is the each-way angle in a race where a few are priced about right. He has been knocking on the door in decent handicaps, and that latest second suggests he has returned in good order without the assessor giving him too much rope. He is not the easiest horse to win with, granted, but in a seven-runner field with three places on offer, that consistency suddenly becomes much more attractive. His mark of 113 asks a question, yet he is at least proven competitive from this sort of perch and should be suited by a truly-run 1m2f on good ground. If the market leaders fluff their lines around this idiosyncratic track, 8/1 looks a perfectly fair each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dangerman is the win play because he has the right profile for this race: unexposed, nicely weighted for a classy 4yo and with Buick booked. Asmen Warrior is the each-way alternative at the bigger price, especially with three places available in a seven-runner field. Sallaal is an obvious danger on last season’s form, while Rathgar is respected after his latest win but may find this deeper.

15:50 – Weatherbys Global Stallions App Great Metropolitan Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 3 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This might only be a five-runner handicap, but it is a properly interesting one. Topteam and Sing Us A Song are the obvious focal points, both lightly raced 4yos from powerful yards and both already operating in the low 100s. Topteam arrives on the back of a win and looks the solid one, while Sing Us A Song is still open to a fair bit of improvement after just one run last season. Asgard’s Captain is the experienced alternative and should be competitive again if this turns tactical, while Night Breeze and Nunc Est Bibendum have questions to answer at this level despite workable enough marks. In a small field around Epsom, track position and how they handle the camber could be decisive, but this does look to revolve around the two younger legs.

Top Selections

1. Topteam – 7/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 1147-1 | Rating: 108 | Topspeed: 93

He makes plenty of appeal. Balding’s 4yo signed off last year with a lesser run, but he quickly got back on track when winning on his return and that form reads well enough for a race of this nature. A mark of 108 asks a question, but he’s progressive, he stays this trip, and Oisin Murphy is exactly the rider you want in a small-field Epsom handicap where fractions and positioning matter. Sing Us A Song is respected, but Topteam has the sharper recent edge and looks the one with the fewest doubts. At 7/4, he is short enough, but still hard to oppose.

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in a five-runner race: Topteam is the win bet. There is no each-way angle worth forcing in a field this small. Sing Us A Song is the obvious danger if returning better at four, while Asgard’s Captain could make life awkward if this becomes tactical, but Topteam sets the standard on current evidence.

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This might only be a six-runner handicap, but it is a smart little contest for the grade and not one to treat lightly. The market rightly focuses on the unexposed trio of On Message, Montague Menace and Timber Twelve, all of whom arrive with scope for better now tackling a track that can catch out the inexperienced. On Message has the highest mark and some solid juvenile form to bring, while Timber Twelve is unbeaten and could still be ahead of the assessor. Montague Menace looked to have turned a corner when scoring on reappearance and that form line gives him a major say. It is a compact race with very little room for error tactically, and handling Epsom may be what decides it.

Top Selections

1. Timber Twelve – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Michael Bell | Form: 1-1 | Rating: 87 | Topspeed:

An unbeaten 3yo from a yard that can ready one for a proper handicap target, Timber Twelve is the one I want on side. He has done nothing wrong in two starts, and while this asks a different question around Epsom’s undulations, he looks the type to keep progressing now sent into handicap company from a fair mark of 87. The bare form does not scream thrown in, but his profile does: lightly raced, straightforward on paper, and open to more improvement than most of these. Hector Crouch is a positive booking and 11/4 looks perfectly workable in a race where upside matters. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Terranoble – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Hollie Doyle | Trainer: Denis Coakley | Form: 7-31 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed:

If you want something at a bigger price against the obvious three, Terranoble makes some each-way appeal. He got off the mark last time and did it in the manner of a colt beginning to learn his job rather than one who had reached his ceiling. An opening mark of 84 is not harsh, especially in a race where a few of the principals are short enough given the track and tactical setup. Hollie Doyle is exactly the sort you want around Epsom, and from stall 4 she should be able to keep him organised. At 10/1, he looks the value each-way punt in a race lacking depth beyond the favourites. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Timber Twelve is the win play as the unbeaten, progressive sort who may still be a step ahead of his mark. For those looking beyond the front of the market, Terranoble is the each-way option at double-figure odds. The obvious dangers are On Message, who has the classiest juvenile form, and Montague Menace, who looked much improved on his return.

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15, 3.50, 4.23 & 4.58 +40yds) (Good, good to firm in places (watering) (rail movements) | | flat

This looks a properly competitive mile handicap to close the card, with a few arriving from different angles and no shortage of plausible cases. Tribal Rhythm sets the standard on the market after a solid comeback second and he has the services of Oisin Murphy, so he is an obvious starting point. Mr Baloo comes here on the back of a win and remains lightly raced enough for a 5yo, while Kaleido is another with a fair bit going for him if ready after a break. Carnival Day and Shafdar are reliable enough types in this grade, but neither looks bombproof around a track that can expose any weakness in balance or tactical speed. It is a useful Class 4, but not an easy one to solve.

Top Selections

1. Tribal Rhythm – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Denis Coakley | Form: 7060-2 | Rating: 99 | Topspeed: 85

He looked right back in business when runner-up on his return, and that was the sort of effort that makes him very hard to oppose in a race like this. The bare form figures from last year are messy enough, but the latest run suggested the ability is still very much there and this mark is workable if he can build on it. Murphy is an eye-catching booking for a horse who should get a good stalking trip from stall 6, and this race doesn’t look full of lurkers thrown in off lower marks. At 9/4 he is no giveaway, but he still holds the strongest claims. Bet: WIN

2. Carnival Day – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Jim Boyle | Form: 34624- | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 80

He appeals as the each-way angle in a race where a few of the obvious ones are priced up about right. Carnival Day was knocking on the door in similar company late last season, and his draw in stall 1 could be a real asset around Epsom if he breaks sharply and holds position. Jim Boyle’s pair are worth a second glance and this one looks the more solid of them, with form that reads consistently well without quite getting the winning turn. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of a progressive 4yo, but 15/2 is fair for a horse likely to run his race and travel well for a long way. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Tribal Rhythm is the win play after that encouraging return and looks the one with the least guesswork attached. For an each-way punt, Carnival Day makes more appeal than several shorter ones because he is solid, well drawn and should be suited by the setup. The main dangers are Mr Baloo, who arrives in winning form, and Kaleido if fit enough to do himself justice first time back.
