17:05 – Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race (IRE Incentive Race)

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a fairly informative 2yo median sires race rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably latched on to the runners with either solid experience or major-yard debut appeal. Scandi Noir sets the standard on what we’ve seen, having already posted a useful third and earned a rating of 87, which is a fair marker in this company. The interesting threat comes from the unexposed pair Anglesea Bridge and Alwaysanangel, both from powerful yards and entitled to know their job first time out. Pink Venom and Away And Gone have had chances and need to step forward, while the bigger-priced runners look to have plenty to find on bare evidence. In truth, it’s not impossible, but it does revolve around whether the debutants are above average.

Top Selections

1. Scandi Noir – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: 3 | Rating: 87 | Topspeed: 77

There is no mystery about what Scandi Noir brings to the table: a solid piece of racecourse form, the best published rating in the line-up, and the look of a juvenile who should come on for the experience. That debut third reads well enough for this level and a mark of 87 makes him the one they all have to get past if the newcomers are merely ordinary. Drawn in stall 1 and partnered by Shane Foley for a yard that does well with sharp youngsters, he looks the percentage call. At 11/8 he is no giveaway, but he is still hard to oppose on the evidence in front of us.

Bet: WIN

2. Crayons In The Sky – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: Stephen Thorne | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

If you want to step away from the obvious, Crayons In The Sky makes a bit of each-way appeal at the prices. This is not a race stuffed with proven depth, and in that sort of contest I’m always interested in an unexposed filly with W J Lee booked and a workable middle draw in stall 4. She doesn’t bring hard form to the table, so there is risk attached, but 12/1 feels a touch dismissive given several of these with experience have already shown their limitations to some degree. In a nine-runner field with three places on offer, she looks the value each-way punt against a shortish favourite and a couple of respected debutantes.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Scandi Noir is the win play because he has the strongest achieved form and sets a clear standard. For an each-way alternative, Crayons In The Sky appeals as the bigger-priced unexposed option in a race where not many have truly advertised themselves yet. Anglesea Bridge and Alwaysanangel are the obvious dangers if either is sharp enough to strike first time.

17:40 – Dino Day At Fairyhouse On July 8th Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This is the sort of big-field 6f handicap that can make fools of plenty, with 18 runners, a stack of exposed sprinters and a few lightly raced 3yos trying to nick one from the older hands. Im Spartacus arrives in decent nick after a solid enough sixth and is sure to be popular, while Lady Kelly shaped better last time and still has room to do better. Tawaazon comes here off a runner-up finish and looks dangerously well treated if backing that up, and Jackandthefox has a low weight and fair enough recent form to get involved. It doesn’t look a deep race in quality terms, but it is competitive and tactical, with track position and who handles the strong pace likely to decide it.

Top Selections

1. Lady Kelly – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Patrick McGettigan | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 8-9863 | Rating: 59 | Topspeed: 55

Lady Kelly looks the one with a bit more upside than most of these. She took a step back in the right direction when third last time, and that run suggested she is starting to work out sprint handicaps after a few quieter efforts. A mark of 59 gives her every chance in a race of this nature, and her Topspeed figure stacks up well enough against rivals who are more exposed than she is. J P Murtagh’s 3yo filly getting weight from older sprinters is always worth a second look in this grade, and 13/2 is fair rather than flashy. She holds strong claims if building on that latest effort. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Tawaazon – 10/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Keithen Kennedy | Trainer: John Andrew Kinsella | Form: 80-402 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 57

Tawaazon is hardly a mystery horse at the age of eight, but this is not the race to be sniffy about a veteran with recent form. That second on his latest start was one of the more persuasive pieces of evidence on offer here, and his Topspeed figure of 57 is among the better numbers in the field. He’s well drawn enough in 11 to stay out of trouble and, crucially, he doesn’t need to improve to play a major role. At 10/1 he makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where a lot of these are threatening more than delivering. He looks the value option against shorter-priced rivals. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lady Kelly is the win play here, as she looks one of the few with genuine scope to improve and gets in on a workable mark. Tawaazon is the sensible each-way punt at 10/1 given his latest second and solid speed figure. Im Spartacus and Jackandthefox are the obvious dangers if things fall right for them in the early dash.

18:10 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap

Race Details: 6f | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This is a proper sprint handicap rather than a penalty kick, with a mix of solid older fillies and a few 3yos who still look open to improvement. Treasure Rose brings the most persuasive recent form after finally getting her head in front and she sets the standard, but she is hardly thrown in off 87 in a race where several arrive with less exposed profiles. Treasured Royal is especially interesting at the weights, getting plenty from her elders despite already posting the best topspeed figure in the field. Glory To Be has the pace for 6f and Colin Keane on Tropical Retreat catches the eye, but that one has a bit to prove after ending last season quietly. Tricky enough, but not impossible to unpick.

Top Selections

1. Treasured Royal – 15/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: -03453 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 84

She looks the percentage call. Treasured Royal is a 3yo carrying just 127 and that immediately makes her dangerous against older fillies in a 6f handicap like this. Her recent figures do not scream obvious winner, but they do show consistency in stronger-looking races and that topspeed mark of 84 is the best on offer here. Drawn in stall 1, she should be able to bag a handy pitch, and if this turns tactical before quickening late, she has the profile to cope. At 15/2, she makes plenty of appeal as one who still has a bit more to give. Bet: WIN

2. Girl Bear – 9/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: Jack Foley | Form: 3-793 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 64

Girl Bear is the each-way play at the prices. She is another 3yo and her latest third suggested she is starting to come to the boil after a few mixed efforts earlier in the campaign. Off 83 and carrying only 125, she does not need to improve a stone to get involved, just a little more than she showed last time. Stall 2 is no bad place to be for a filly likely to be ridden with a bit of patience, and W J Lee is the sort you want when threading a path in these competitive sprints. At 9/1, she looks a sensible each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Treasured Royal is the win bet, chiefly because her weight-for-age edge and best-in-field topspeed give her a stronger upside than the market may be allowing for. Girl Bear is the each-way alternative in a race where three places matter. Treasure Rose is the obvious danger after her recent win, while Glory To Be is another who would not surprise if bouncing back.

18:45 – Racing Again July 8th Fillies Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This is a proper big-field Fairyhouse handicap, the sort where draw, pace and a bit of luck in running will matter every bit as much as bare ratings. The 3yos look to have a strong hand, with Hasita, Elly Bay, Mo Anam Chara and Sagasti all arriving with recent form that gives them obvious appeal, while Rodeeve comes here on the back of a win and Minaun View has been knocking loudly on the door. Queen Aethelflaed is another with solid credentials, but this is not a race lacking depth and you can make cases for plenty at double-figure prices. Even so, it does not look an especially strong handicap for the grade and that should suit the progressive types rather than the exposed older fillies.

Top Selections

1. Hasita – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 08-33 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 46

Hasita makes plenty of appeal in a race where unexposed 3yos could easily dominate. She has shaped well the last twice, finishing third on both starts this season, and there is a fair chance this extra emphasis on speed over 7f on quick ground will suit. J P Murtagh’s fillies often improve once they get a bit of racing under them, and a mark of 69 does not look beyond her at all. Ben Coen is a notable positive in a race where tactical positioning will be important, and at 6/1 with Bet365 she looks a fair win play rather than a skinny one. Bet: WIN

2. Elly Bay – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: James Ryan | Trainer: Jack W Davison | Form: 49-652 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 44

Elly Bay is the each-way angle because she is coming to the boil at the right time and still looks capable of another step forward. Her latest second advertised that she is ready to strike, and from a racing weight of 128 she is one of the more attractively treated fillies in the line-up. Jack W Davison does well with these sharp, streetwise handicappers and James Ryan knows how to get them into a rhythm in big fields. She is not bombproof in a 21-runner cavalry charge, but 15/2 with five places on offer gives her plenty of each-way appeal given her current level of consistency. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Hasita is the main play as the likely improver in a race full of exposed enough handicappers, so she gets the win vote. Elly Bay is the safer each-way punt given her recent second and light weight in a race paying five places. The obvious dangers are Rodeeve after that last-time-out win, and Minaun View, who is well drawn and arrives in reliable nick.

19:20 – GAIN The Advantage Series Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This is a proper 3yo handicap puzzle rather than a race packed with rock-solid form, and that usually means siding with the runners still open to a bit of improvement. Kc Bear sets a fair standard after solid efforts either side of his winter break and looks sure to be popular with Colin Keane booked. Only One Scobie arrives in form too after getting off the mark before a respectable third, while Avec Grand Plaisir has been shaping as though a race like this should be within reach. Fortuity is another with a recent win on the page, but this is competitive enough and there are plenty with similar ratings. In a 15-runner mile handicap on quick ground, tactical position and who handles the pace best in the straight will matter plenty.

Top Selections

1. Kc Bear – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Noel Meade | Form: 831-24 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 38

Kc Bear looks the most solid option in a race where plenty have something to prove. He signed off last year with a win, returned with a very decent second and then didn’t run badly at all when fourth last time, form figures that suggest he is holding his level well and can still edge forward. Drawn in 4, he should be able to get a sensible position, and the booking of Colin Keane is an obvious positive in a big-field mile handicap where decisions matter. At 4/1 he is no giveaway, but he does have the profile of one who holds strong claims if reproducing his recent consistency. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Avec Grand Plaisir – 13/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Ronan Whelan | Trainer: Jarlath P Fahey | Form: 0-753 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 61

Avec Grand Plaisir appeals as the each-way play because the recent trajectory is the right one. After looking short of the required level earlier in the season, he has gradually sharpened up, and that latest third hinted that a mark of 66 is workable. The topspeed figure of 61 also stacks up well enough in this company, and there is a fair chance he is still learning his job after only a handful of starts. From stall 12 he will need things to fall right, but at 13/2 he makes plenty more appeal than some of the shorter ones if you want a horse with place claims and a realistic shot at winning. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kc Bear is the percentage call for the win bet given his consistency and the Keane booking. Avec Grand Plaisir is the each-way punt in a race with four places on offer, as he looks to be coming to hand at the right time. Only One Scobie is the obvious danger after recent good efforts, while Fortuity and Cisterna also merit respect in a typically trappy 3yo handicap.

19:55 – Early Bird Winter Festival Tickets At Fairyhouse.ie Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a proper competitive mile handicap rather than a race full of hidden lurkers, with plenty of these arriving exposed enough to have their chance assessed. Launch Time and Bella Colombia head the market for obvious reasons, while William F Browne comes here off a much more encouraging effort and is one of the few who looks capable of nudging forward again. The pace angle is not completely straightforward and that could make track position important on this quick surface. A few of the lower weights, notably La Campanella, have enough in their profile to get involved if things fall right, but plenty of the rest need a leap of faith. Tricky, yes, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. William F Browne – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Robert Whearty | Trainer: Paul W Flynn | Form: 097-03 | Rating: 63 | Topspeed: 40

He had looked hard to warm to on last season’s efforts, but that latest third was a clear step back in the right direction and suggests he is beginning to figure things out in handicaps. A mark of 63 does not look beyond him at all if he can build on that run, and the return to this mile should suit. He is not the flashiest in the field, but he comes here with more upside than most of these exposed rivals. At 4/1 with Bet365, he makes plenty of appeal in a race where a few of the shorter ones are a little more vulnerable than the betting implies. Bet: WIN

2. La Campanella – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Kearney | Trainer: Gerard Keane | Form: 05-075 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed: 51

She is not arriving on a sexy piece of form, but there was enough in that latest fifth to think she could be ready to strike from a workable mark. Drawn low in 3 and carrying just 129, she has the sort of profile that can easily outrun double-figure odds in a race of this nature. Her figures are not wildly different from several of those above her in the market, and this quick ground should hold no fears. With four places on offer, 12/1 with Bet365 looks a fair each-way play for a mare who does not need to improve much to hit the frame and could easily do better than that. Bet: EACH-WAY

Danger: Bella Colombia is solid enough and obvious, while Launch Time has the services of Colin Keane and should not be dismissed lightly.

Betting Strategy

William F Browne is the one to side with for the win, arriving off the most persuasive recent piece of form among the principals. For an each-way alternative, La Campanella looks overpriced given her mark, draw and the depth of this race. Bella Colombia is the danger if running to her usual level, and Launch Time is another who could make this interesting.

20:30 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m 4f | | Going: GOOD TO FIRM, Good in places (Watering) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary maiden on paper despite a couple of obvious contenders at the head of the market. Pleased brings the most solid recent form after finishing third and then second, while Vanir sets the standard on the figures and shaped like a filly crying out for this sort of trip when runner-up last time. Cosmetic has had more chances than the front pair but at least arrives with respectable ratings and could easily fill the frame again. Essential Comedy also showed enough on debut to suggest she can step forward over this longer distance. Once you move beyond that cluster, it gets murky quickly, with several exposed outsiders and a few inexperienced types needing major improvement. It feels more about which of the principals progresses again rather than a deep, strong contest.

Top Selections

1. Vanir – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 82 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 60

Vanir is the one I want on side. She has the best rating in the field, her form has a solid upward look to it, and that latest second suggested this step up to 1m4f could be exactly what she wants. There was enough promise in her debut, but it was the improvement from first to second start that really catches the eye, especially in a maiden where plenty of these are standing still. Ben Coen keeps the ride for a yard that places its fillies sensibly, and 2/1 looks fair rather than cramped given she may still have more to come than the favourite. She holds strong claims if seeing this trip out as expected.

Bet: WIN

2. Essential Comedy – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Ms Claire O’Connell | Form: 6 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 53

Essential Comedy is the each-way play at the prices. A debut sixth does not leap off the page, but the bare form is good enough to make her interesting here and a mark of 74 says she is already operating to a useful maiden level. The move up to 1m4f looks a positive, and having Colin Keane booked is hardly a negative in a race where a few of these are still learning on the job. She does not need to find a huge amount to get into the shake-up behind the obvious pair, and available at 15/2 with Bet365 she looks the value alternative if Pleased and Vanir dominate the betting as expected.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Vanir is the win bet because she brings the best blend of current form, rating and likely improvement for this longer trip. Essential Comedy makes more appeal as an each-way punt at the prices, especially with Keane aboard. Pleased is the obvious danger after her 3-2 sequence, while Cosmetic looks the most likely of the rest to nick a place if the front end proves too strong.
