17:15 – Mercedes-Benz Of Chichester Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)

Race Details: 2m 5f | Class 4 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This looks a fairly straightforward seven-runner mares’ novice hurdle on paper, even if the market gives us a proper match between Strong Run and Lisnamurrican. The pair bring the only standout ratings to the table and, barring a sudden leap forward from one of the lesser-exposed types, the race should revolve around them. That Is Blue has at least shown enough to suggest she can be competitive for minor money, while the remainder need major improvement judged on what they have done so far. Over 2m5f at Fontwell, a bit of rhythm and stamina will matter more than flashy speed, and this doesn’t strike me as a deep contest. It’s not impossible, but it is a race where the obvious form is probably the right form.

Top Selections

1. Lisnamurrican – 5/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Nico de Boinville | Trainer: Nicky Henderson | Form: 25 | Rating: 125 | Topspeed: 110

She is the one I want to be with. A mark of 125 is the best in the field and that Topspeed figure of 110 also says she has already achieved the strongest form on offer. The bare form figures of 2 and 5 don’t scream certainty, but they do suggest ability in better company than this, and dropping into a Class 4 mares’ novice should make life easier. Henderson and Nico de Boinville are hardly a combination to ignore in a race of this nature, and at 5/4 she makes more appeal than the shorter-priced alternative because her ceiling still looks a little higher over this longer trip. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. That Is Blue – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Caoilin Quinn | Trainer: Henrietta C Knight | Form: 33 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 78

If you want something beyond the obvious pair, That Is Blue is the each-way play. She lacks the raw figures of the front two, but she has at least shown consistency with back-to-back thirds and that counts for plenty in a race where several of these have offered very little. She’s still only a five-year-old, she should stay this sort of trip, and Henrietta Knight’s runners often know their job in these smaller jumps contests. At 12/1 with two places on offer, she looks the sensible each-way punt rather than a wild swing. She probably needs one or both market leaders to underperform, but she has fewer questions than most of the outsiders. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lisnamurrican is the win bet and looks the percentage call on the figures, the stable, and the class drop. For an each-way alternative, That Is Blue makes more appeal than the bigger-priced no-hopers because she has at least been running respectably. Strong Run is the obvious danger, but at cramped odds I’d rather side with Lisnamurrican to come out on top.

17:45 – KSR Lighting, The Ultimate Lighting Solutions Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

Race Details: 3m 1f | Class 4 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This looks a tight little staying handicap chase rather than a race full of hidden depth, and the market has understandably latched on to the progressive pair Edgewell and Sweet Nightingale. Edgewell arrives on a hat-trick after back-to-back wins and still looks on the up, while Sweet Nightingale is dangerous from the foot of the weights after another solid effort in third. Ballynaheer is the other obvious one, coming here in winning form, though he now has to concede plenty all round. Le Galli Bier has bits of novice promise and could still have more to offer over fences, but this trip asks a fresh question. In truth, this feels like a race likely decided by who sees out the 3m1f best and who gets into a smooth jumping rhythm round Fontwell.

Top Selections

1. Edgewell – 4/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Harry Reed | Trainer: Nick Scholfield | Form: 352811 | Rating: 112 | Topspeed: 99

Edgewell is very easy to like here. He has won his last two, comes in with momentum, and his profile suggests he is still improving rather than clinging on to a mark the handicapper has already got hold of. A 112 rating does not look excessive for an 8yo in this sort of race, and he gets in with just 10st 12lb, which could matter late on over this trip. Harry Reed is a positive booking and, if Edgewell settles and keeps jumping with the same fluency he showed the last twice, he has the right shape for a staying chase at Fontwell. At 4/1, he looks a fair win play.

Bet: WIN

2. Le Galli Bier – 9/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Freddie Mitchell | Trainer: Gary & Josh Moore | Form: 522U35 | Rating: 113 | Topspeed: 92

Le Galli Bier is the one at a slightly bigger price who makes some each-way appeal in a seven-runner field. His recent form does not scream winner, but there have been enough respectable efforts in there to think he can be competitive off 113, especially for a yard that knows exactly how to place one around Fontwell. He is only five, which makes him one of the less exposed runners in the line-up, and there is every chance this sort of staying handicap can bring out a bit more progress. He does need to prove he truly sees out 3m1f strongly, but 9/2 is tempting if you think the Moore team have found the right opening.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Edgewell is the solid win bet given his progressive profile, light weight and recent finishing power. For an each-way alternative, Le Galli Bier is the one who could outrun his price if this test draws out improvement. Sweet Nightingale is the obvious danger at the weights, while Ballynaheer commands respect despite carrying plenty more than some unexposed rivals.

18:20 – KSR Lighting Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 5f | Class 4 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This is a tight little six-runner handicap but not a straightforward one, because there are at least three with perfectly solid claims and one or two lurking at bigger prices if things get tactical. Valadon brings the classiest recent profile and arrives on the back of another sound effort, while Jackomy is the obvious progressive threat after back-to-back wins and still looks on the up for Neil Mulholland. Calvino is interesting too, especially on his topspeed figure, but he does need to bounce back from a lesser run. Precious Metal is capable if forgiven a poor latest effort, whereas Yellow Star and He’s A Latchico look to need a bit more. In a small field, position and jumping rhythm could easily decide it.

Top Selections

1. Valadon – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Bryan Carver | Trainer: Harry Fry | Form: 1-P413 | Rating: 126 | Topspeed: 103

Valadon makes most appeal in a race where there is not much room for error. Harry Fry’s six-year-old has a likeable profile for this grade, winning two starts back and then shaping perfectly well in third last time when hardly disgraced. He looks fairly treated off 126, stays this sort of trip well enough and, crucially in a race of this size, he is the one I trust most to run his race again. Bryan Carver is a positive booking and 2/1 looks a workable price rather than a gift. He is the percentage call and the one they all have to beat.

Bet: WIN

2. Calvino – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Paddy Hanlon | Trainer: Paul Nicholls | Form: 1-2P13 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 119

Calvino is the value angle if you are prepared to forgive a slightly flat run last time. Before that he had been progressing nicely, with form figures suggesting there is a proper race in him off this sort of mark, and his topspeed of 119 is the standout number in the field. That alone gives him a chance if he gets into a rhythm early. Paul Nicholls is not sending many to Fontwell for the scenery and this six-year-old is better than a 10/1 shot in a race lacking depth. In a six-runner contest the each-way play is not bombproof, but he is the one at a price who could easily outrun the market.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Valadon is the solid win bet because he brings the most dependable current form and looks well suited by this setup. For a bit of value, Calvino is the each-way punt at double-figure odds, especially if you think he can rebound to the level of his earlier efforts. Jackomy is the obvious danger after two wins, while Precious Metal is not dismissed if bouncing back.

18:50 – V2 Radio Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 3m 1f | Class 5 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This is not a deep Class 5 by any means, but it is the sort of staying handicap hurdle where reliability counts for plenty. West Orchard brings the most persuasive recent profile after a string of solid efforts in similar company, while Has Troke has enough back form to be a major player if bouncing back from a lesser latest run. Amalfi Skyline is interesting off a low weight for a mark of 103, though he does come with risks attached, and several others need a leap of faith. Counteract is impossible to weigh up confidently after a long spell of poor completion figures, while Simon The Seagull and Fravanco have bits and pieces of form without screaming win material. In truth, this looks a trappy little staying race that may simply go to the one most willing in the closing stages.

Top Selections

1. West Orchard – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Freddie Gingell | Trainer: Joe Tizzard | Form: 1-2523 | Rating: 97 | Topspeed: 90

West Orchard has been knocking on the door and is starting to look hard to oppose in a race of this nature. His recent sequence of 2, 5, 2 and 3 suggests he is holding his form well, and that Topspeed figure of 90 is the best in the field, which matters in a modest staying handicap. Joe Tizzard’s runner does not need to improve a ton to take this, just reproduce the level he has been running to. Freddie Gingell is a positive booking and, at 5/2, he makes more appeal than some of the less trustworthy rivals around him. He sets the standard on recent evidence and looks the percentage call. Bet type: WIN.

Bet: WIN

2. Amalfi Skyline – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Isabelle Ryder | Trainer: Barry Brennan | Form: P/2-F5 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 73

Amalfi Skyline is not straightforward, but there is enough here to tempt an each-way punt in a nine-runner race lacking depth. He runs from the same mark as Has Troke yet carries only 142, and his old placed effort in this sphere gives him a live chance if he settles and sees this trip out strongly. The fall and the latest fifth mean he comes with obvious caveats, but this is easier than some of the races he has been contesting and 5/1 is fair in the context of this field. Barry Brennan’s runner does not need to be a world-beater to hit the frame, and if the race gets attritional he could keep on past beaten horses late. Bet type: EACH-WAY.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

West Orchard is the solid win play because he brings the strongest current form and the best recent speed figure to a weak enough contest. For an each-way alternative, Amalfi Skyline makes more appeal than some shorter-priced, less convincing rivals. Has Troke is the obvious danger if returning to his better efforts, while Fravanco could nick a place if the principals underperform.

19:20 – A.W. Jeffreys (Southampton) Ltd Handicap Chase

Race Details: 2m 3f | Class 5 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This looks a proper Class 5 handicap chase in the truest sense: plenty with chances, but just as many with holes in their profile. Hatos, Gorcombe Moonshine and Majestic Moment head the market for obvious reasons, all arriving in decent nick, while A Little Something has the sort of profile that says a race like this is well within reach if putting it all together over fences. Kitsilano is admirably reliable without looking especially well treated, and there are several others, like Jaffa Cake and King Of The Story, who come with enough baggage to make them hard to trust. In other words, this is no penalty kick. The key may simply be who jumps cleanest and travels best around this sharp track.

Top Selections

1. Hatos – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Freddie Gingell | Trainer: Joe Tizzard | Form: 4P5223 | Rating: 101 | Topspeed: 93

Hatos is the one I keep coming back to because his recent profile is solid without being overhyped. He has been knocking on the door, with figures of 5223 in his last four completed starts, and that consistency counts for plenty in a race where several rivals are capable of throwing in a howler. His rating of 101 looks fair rather than punitive, and a topspeed of 93 tells you he has the raw ability to win a contest of this nature if reproducing that level. Freddie Gingell gets on well with these types for the Tizzard yard, and at 7/2 he makes more appeal than some shorter-priced Class 5 favourites often do. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. A Little Something – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jonathan Burke | Trainer: Emma Lavelle | Form: 72-3P2 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 68

A Little Something looks the each-way value in a race where plenty of these have questions to answer. The latest second was a step back in the right direction after a below-par effort, and that piece of form gives him a squeak if building on it now. He is off 103, which puts him right in the mix on official figures, and Jonathan Burke is exactly the sort you want aboard in a race that may take a bit of management rather than brute force. He is not bombproof, but at 7/1 in a 12-runner Class 5, he has enough upside to make the frame and possibly better if the principals fluff their lines. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Hatos is the win play because he brings the strongest recent consistency and looks less risky than most in here. A Little Something is the each-way punt at 7/1, with four places on offer making obvious appeal. The main dangers are Gorcombe Moonshine, who arrives on the back of two seconds, and Majestic Moment, who is respected after a last-time-out win but may not be quite the bargain at the head of the market.

Race Details: 2m 3f | Class 5 | Going: 5.15, 6.20, 6.50, 7.20 & 7.50 +36yds and 5.45 +54yds) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick 6.0) (watering) (rail movements) | | jumps

This looks a proper end-of-card handicap rather than a race full of certainties. Superstylin sets the standard on recent consistency and arrives in the sort of form that makes him obvious, but he is short enough in a 13-runner contest where a few lurk on workable marks. Blue Universe has been knocking on the door without getting his head in front, while Nelson Gate is the unexposed 4yo in the line-up and could easily have more to offer now entering handicaps off 100. Spanish Dancer has bits of form that give him a squeak if sharpening up, too. Fontwell can reward rhythm and track craft, so jumping and tactical position will matter plenty. It is not a deep Class 5 by any means, but it is a mildly tricky puzzle all the same.

Top Selections

1. Superstylin – 5/2 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Tom Cannon | Trainer: Chris Gordon | Form: 321212 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed:

He is the percentage call. That form string tells its own story: thriving, reliable and repeatedly running right up to his mark. Superstylin has been doing most things correctly in this grade and another bold show looks highly likely from a yard that knows exactly how to place one around the southern tracks. Tom Cannon is an eye-catching booking in a race where solid execution may be enough. Off 103, he is hardly thrown in, but this is not a race packed with improvers either, and his recent profile is comfortably the strongest on offer. At 5/2 he is not a giveaway, but he is still the one they all have to beat.

Bet: WIN

2. Nelson Gate – 15/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Caoilin Quinn | Trainer: Gary & Josh Moore | Form: 293 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 58

For an each-way angle, Nelson Gate makes plenty of appeal. He is the least exposed runner near the head of the market, just a 4yo, and his three completed runs have all hinted there is a race in him once getting a handicap mark. A rating of 100 looks fair rather than punitive, and the Moore team are exactly the sort to find improvement in this setup at Fontwell. Caoilin Quinn is another positive around here, especially on horses that can travel and hold a position. At 15/2, you are backing potential as much as proof, but in a race where plenty have already shown their hand, that is no bad thing.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Superstylin is the win bet because he brings the most convincing current form and is hard to oppose in this grade. Nelson Gate is the each-way punt at 15/2, with his unexposed profile making him the value against more exposed rivals. Blue Universe is the obvious danger after a string of placed efforts, while Spanish Dancer is another who would not surprise if bouncing back.
