1.15 Doncaster – ALIGN THE STARS (1pt e.w – 14/1 generally)
Charlie Johnston’s ALIGN THE STARS returned to form last time out when fourth in the Old Borough Cup and the four-year-old will make a quick turnaround on Friday and will bid for victory in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster, which is off at 1.15pm. That race only came six days ago, but he showed improved form for the fitting of blinkers and they will be on again for this competitive handicap. He remains on a mark of 94 for this contest and having won over 1m 6f at Goodwood off a mark of 99 then he is more than capable of ruffling some feathers at decent double-figured odds and looks an excellent each-way play.
2.25 Doncaster – LADY IMAN (1pt win – 7/2 Ladbrokes, BetVictor)
Irish sprinting star LADY IMAN was unable to land a blow when well fancied for the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York last time out, but the Ger Lyons-trained daughter of Starman will return to calmer waters on Friday and is well fancied to strike gold in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at 2.25pm. Two-year-olds have often found it hard taking on the older horses in the Nunthorpe and she was well beaten, but she did travel eye-catchingly well through the middle stages of that contest, before being slightly hampered when looking to unleash her run. Having lost her chance she wasn’t given a hard time, and having showed when storming to Molecomb Stakes success prior to that York run that she is one of the leading sprint juveniles then she can deliver the goods against her own age group here.
3.00 Doncaster – SWEET WILLIAM (1pt win – 11/8 generally)
John & Thady Gosden’s SWEET WILLIAM was a fine winner of the Doncaster Cup last season and the hugely consistent former Ebor Handicap runner-up should prove to be a cut above his rivals here. He’s often struggled to deliver the goods at the very highest level, but there’s certainly lack of strength in depth in the staying division and with no Trawlerman here or any Aidan O’Brien-trained runners then Sweet William should be too good. He was a decent second behind Trawlerman in the Yorkshire Cup last time out, but he showed when beating Trueshan in this race last season that he can produce the goods at Doncaster and he looks a very solid option.
