1.15 Doncaster – TREBLE TEE (1pt win – 5/2 bet365)
Runner-up in the Summer Cup Handicap at Thirsk, TREBLE TEE then finished second in another competitive Goodwood handicap, but the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained raider can finally get his name in lights in the opening race at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon at 1.15pm. He’s been given another 2lbs rise by the handicapper, so lines up off a career high mark of 97, but while he’s improving plenty of his rivals in this curtain-raiser are not in the same form as him. Hawksbill and Great Chieftain should be his biggest dangers, but they too have been rocketing up the handicap and it’s Treble Tee that has the most potential to improve again.
2.25 Doncaster – RHYTHM N HOOVES (1pt win – 12/1 Ladbrokes, bet365)
There’s a hugely competitive renewal of the Portland Handicap at 2.25pm and having been won by subsequent Group 1 winning sprinter American Affair it’s a race that can throw up a classy winner. There doesn’t seem to be a runner in that league lining up here, but one that does head into the event on the back of a win is Robert Cowell’s RHYTHM N HOOVES. A three-quarters length winner at Newbury last time out, the five-year-old has been given a 4lbs rise by the handicapper, but he was much the best that day and has the capabilities of following that up. Likely to be held up off the pace, he could well unleash a race-winning surge in the closing stages and can land this coveted prize in style.
3.40 Doncaster – CARMERS (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
Dual Derby winner Lambourn bids for another Classic success in the St Leger at 3.40pm, while stablemate Scandinavia is a red-hot favourite to land the Group 1 showpiece on Saturday afternoon, but the Aidan O’Brien-trained duo could both be thwarted by the hugely progressive CARMERS, who can land the money for Ger Lyons. A winner of the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, where Scandinavia finished behind in fifth, Carmers then finished ahead of Lambourn in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last time out. That was his first career defeat, but he shaped like the step up in trip here would bring on more improvement and he’s certainly the value play to down the Ballydoyle brigade here.
