3.00 York – EGOLI (1pt e/w – 10/1 bet365)
This looks a weak renewal of this Group 2, not least because favourite Do Or Do Not remains a maiden after five starts. Regardless of how well he has held his own in good company, it shows he is beatable, making it significantly more comfortable to back EGOLI to bounce back from finishing sixth in Goodwood’s Group 2 Richmond Stakes. He was drawn badly however, ultimately beating his three rivals up the centre of the track, but losing to all of those who raced down the stands rail. He had previously defied a penalty to win for a second time at Newbury, but it is his opening victory which stands out, as it came over course and distance, while the form is working out very well on a line through the third. He has shown a propensity for racing prominently and can cause a minor upset.
4.45 York – FRESCOBALDI (1pt win – 5-1 Paddy Power/Betfair)
It may be significant that Aidan O’Brien unleashed two-time Group 1 winner Whirl in this race a year ago, and although she was beaten in fifth, he did win it in 2023 with Battle Cry. There has been slight negative momentum in the market regarding FRESCOBALDI after Ballydoyle’s slower than average start to the week at York, but given favourite Naval Light has proven frustrating, the selection looks the better value play. He probably should have won last time out at Fairyhouse, perhaps paying for going too soon and drifting across the track, but with Ryan Moore now aboard, slightly more patient tactics should see him see the 7f trip out fine.
5.20 York – POINT OF CONTACT (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)
For a yard in particularly good form of late, it is a surprise to see quotes at a significant price for POINT OF CONTACT after his effort at Glorious Goodwood most recently. The three-year-old was short of room and bumped about at the Sussex track, but still found reserves to rally home in sixth, catching the eye with the way he hit the line. He was fewer than two lengths behind the reopposing Sea Force that day, but that rival had no issues with traffic and there is now a 2lb swing at the weights for the son of Blue Point. Getting back on sounder ground should help, while he ran well behind an already 103-rated rival in novice company on his only course and distance start to date too.
