5.34 Windsor – WHEELS OF FIRE (1pt e/w – 6/1 generally)
Conditions will likely suit Richard Hannon’s WHEELS OF FIRE, who could be primed to pick up a first handicap success. He has been well backed on all bar one of his handicap starts to date, suggesting there is confidence from connections, and in his formbook, that he will soon get the job done, especially with his mark gradually declining. His runs over 6f have been superior to those over 5f, making it easier to overlook a weaker effort last time out, while he has also shaped well on ground softer than good so far. His run at Catterick in July exemplifies these distance and ground quirks, being over 6f on good-to-soft, and in which he most likely would have won without twice being hampered; he is now 2lb lower in the handicap and can belatedly go in.
6.04 Windsor – WORLD OF DARCY (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 generally)
The issue for WORLD OF DARCY may be that the ground is drying throughout the day, but even prevailing good-to-soft after some churn from the previous seven races on the card would speak strongly in his favour. Four of his five turf wins have come on that type of surface or slower, with one of those on heavy over this course and distance last autumn, as well as a win at Brighton off a mark of 68 on soft. His mark has freefallen this term, but his two most noteworthy efforts have arrived when rain had hit Kempton’s all-weather surface, and when the going was softer than good over 5f at Lingfield, which is shorter than his optimum trip. Down to a mark of 62 in a race which finally meets more of his ideal criteria, he could be poised to spring a surprise, as he is still only a four-year-old.
