2.25 Haydock – RIDE THE THUNDER (1pt win – 11/1 bet365)

Roger Varian’s RIDE THE THUNDER only has one win from his six career starts to date, but the three-year-old son of Night Of Thunder has been a real model of consistency and could relish the step up in trip in Haydock’s 2.25pm contest on Saturday. Last seen staying on eye-catchingly well over 1m 3f 44y at Goodwood, the colt will enjoy going over further here and off a mark of 84 looks capable of landing a significant blow. He’s finished second on soft going, so any give in the ground shouldn’t have any hindrance, and while the likes of Valiancy and Circus Of Rome look big dangers, it’s Varian’s charge that can shine brightest.

2.40 Ascot – STERLING KNIGHT (1pt e/w – 18/1 generally – five places each-way available)

Seventh in this race 12 months ago, STERLING KNIGHT is back for another crack at the 7f handicap at 2.40pm at Ascot and off a 1lb lower mark the Ed Dunlop-trained six-year-old could run a big race at decent odds. He just tired in soft going in the closing stages of last year’s contest, but he’s been a real model of consistency this term and was a winner off 87 at Doncaster back in July. He finished second at Newmarket off a new mark of 91, and it’s that figure he takes his chance off on Saturday, so has to be capable grabbing a place. With most bookmakers offering five places then he’s shown a really positive attitude and never runs a bad race, so he’s a really solid pick in a competitive betting heat.

3.00 Haydock – CABALLO DE MAR (1pt win – 13/2 William Hill)

Rated over 30lbs higher than a year ago, CABALLO DE MAR has been one of the most progressive handicappers over the last 12 months and George Scott’s four-year-old can continue on an upward curve and land victory in the Old Borough Cup Handicap at 3.00pm at Haydock Park. Last seen finishing a gallant runner-up in the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot, Scott’s charge will have to contend with another 2lbs rise by the handicapper, but a mark of 99 still looks feasible for this upwardly mobile stayer.

3.35 Haydock – INISHERIN (1pt e/w – 20/1 Ladbrokes, BetVictor)

Kevin Ryan’s INISHERIN has been somewhat the forgotten horse of the sprint division as having won impressively in the Duke Of York Stakes at the start of the season, the former Group 1 Commonwealth Cup winner has failed to fire on his two most recent starts. He was hugely impressive when storming to victory in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park last season in soft ground, so if he can replicate that run here then he has to be a huge player at 20/1. Lazzat is entitled to be a warm order, but is awfully short and with plenty of shocks occurring in Group sprints this season then he’s worth taking on. Sent off a 5/2 favourite for this race 12 months, Ryan’s charge could only finish 13th, but he’s worth another crack in the 2025 renewal and is over-priced.
