2.30 Doncaster – ANGEL HUNTER (1pt e/w – 20/1 bet365)
Richard Hannon’s ANGEL HUNTER was given a beautiful ride by Ryan Moore when landing a York nursery earlier in the season, and the three-year-old could well emulate that sort of performance in the hugely competitive City Of Doncaster Handicap at 2.30pm at Doncaster on Sunday. Last seen finishing fifth in a decent classified stakes at Ascot, Hannon’s raider has been dropped 2lbs to a mark of 88 and could well land a decent placed finish. Jamie Spencer takes the ride, so he’s sure to be unleashed late on, and if the head wind continues on Town Moor then the leaders are sure to be coming back to him in the closing stages, so he has to be considered.
3.00 Doncaster – AKKADIAN THUNDER (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
David O’Meara’s AKKADIAN THUNDER has a stunning record at Doncaster having tasted success on two of his three career runs at the Yorkshire track, while on his other outing he finished a respectable third. So, he has to be on the shortlist for the Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap at 3.00pm on Sunday. He’s disappointed on his last two runs at Ascot, but he’s duly been dropped 4lbs in the handicap since then, so a mark of 95 for this event looks very appealing. He will be coming with a very strong run in the closing stages of the contest and he could well storm past beaten horses to get his head in front in the shadow of the post.
4.25 Curragh – AMILOC (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
Both Illinois and Al Riffa have shown to be top class performers at the highest level and it’s no surprise to see them spearheading the betting for the Irish St. Leger at the Curragh at 4.25pm on Sunday afternoon. However, they face a rapidly improving unbeaten three-year-old in the shape of AMILOC that can make it six wins from six and duly land this prize for Ralph Beckett. Having won the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood, the Postponed gelding then went and beat the classy Zahrann in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Now stepping up to Group 1 company and up in distance, Amiloc will need to kick on again, but he was producing all his best work in the closing stages at Ascot, so a few furlongs extra here shouldn’t be an issue. Receiving 8lbs from his older rivals, the three-year-old looks the value play in what is a cracking contest.
