3.30 York – DIAMOND BAY (1pt e/w – 13/2 Paddy Power/Hills)

One of the elder statesmen in this race, a first-time visor, coupled with a return to York, could be the answer for DIAMOND BAY in this long distance handicap. The seven-year-old won on his only ever start at York back in June 2023, providing one of the two victories trainer Tom Ward has had from just six runners on the Knavesmire. That came off 5lb higher than his current rating too, but he has broadly maintained his form and looks likely to be a more thorough stayer of this 2m trip than has been the case in the past. His third over 1m6f at Goodwood last time out certainly hinted that to be the case, and this looks a winnable contest with plenty of his rivals in no better than middling form.

4.00 York – THEORY OF TIDES (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 generally)

A trio of duck eggs to end 2024 ensures THEORY OF TIDES possesses an unusual formbook. However, he looks worth a chance for this handicap, as there may have been excuses for each of his three disappointments last term and he had previously looked extremely promising. There were plenty of useful horses behind him on debut, as there were when he defied a penalty on his second start at Yarmouth (second and third now rated 85 and 84). That he is now on a mark of 91 would suggest the handicapper has given him a chance, with the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes proving beyond him next time out, while heavy ground at Hamilton and a tendency to hang left at Doncaster, putting paid to his chances more recently. Having been gelded, and after a long absence, he could be a revived horse, with his debut victory showing he can put his best foot forward when fresh.

4.30 York – ALMERAQ (2pt win – 2/1 generally)

For all that the more experienced Lethal Levi has gone from strength to strength this campaign, Karl Burke’s charge has not got an especially great record at York, with just one win and two places from seven starts. Given he looks the primary danger, confidence is only fuelled further in ALMERAQ, whose connections would have seen him run in the Group 1 Sprint Cup on Saturday had he not been balloted out. The three-year-old has only run four times, but his most recent success on handicap debut was startlingly impressive. Coming off a mark of 90, he scorched away to win by five lengths and the runner-up won next time out. That was easily a Group level performance, so this Listed race could well prove to be merely a stepping stone.
