1.15 Newmarket – NEVER LET GO (1pt e/w – 8/1 Paddy Power/Sky)
Having defeated current market leader Cajole to win the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot, it seems surprising that NEVER LET GO is twice the price here for Ed Walker. The daughter of No Nay Never was benefitted by her track position, but the pair were not drawn too far apart, and she ultimately defeated Cajole by a length while conceding 3lb. They race off levels here with the selection having run perfectly well at Haydock at this level last time out and her prominent racing style should suit the Rowley Mile. She should also be open to as much improvement as any of her rivals.
1.50 Newmarket – REVOIR (1pt e/w – 9/1 Hills)
Although she faded out of contention in the Oaks on her only start over 1m4f, REVOIR looks worth another go at this distance and can overturn form with the year older Miss Justice from two starts ago. The three-year-old is without a win this year, but her three runner-up efforts have been by under a length, with those last two seeing her do her best work at the finish over 1m2f. In each of those, she pulled nicely clear of the third at Listed level, so she is worth a victory in Pattern company, with this race not possessing the depth of most Group 3s.
3.00 Newmarket – DETAIN (1pt e/w – 17/2 Hills)
The drop back in trip to 1m could well suit DETAIN, who has been a relative disappointment the last twice, but who has shown plenty of ability at his best. John & Thady Gosden’s charge was third in the French Derby when upped to 1m2½f, but that race set up perfectly for him, whereas neither of his two subsequent starts have over that trip at Royal Ascot and Haydock. The son of the late Wootton Bassett had also been sixth in the French 2000 Guineas when closing fast, so he does have the pace for the 1m distance and may be able to conserve more at this distance having raced keenly over further.
4.45 Newmarket – CLASSIC ENCOUNTER (1pt e/w – 11/1 Hills)
For all the potential of the youngest generation, only one three-year-old has won this handicap. Against them, CLASSIC ENCOUNTER makes plenty of appeal at this trip with George Boughey’s yard in tremendous form. The four-year-old has won twice this season, running really well up until early July. However, upped to 1m2½f at York, he has failed to feature, but does have the benefit of having been dropped 3lb in the handicap. Back down to 1m1f, over which he had won on the Knavesmire earlier in the campaign, he looks well treated again, having also been a runner-up in a competitive 1m handicap over the Rowley Mile in May.
