2.00 Yarmouth – DEVIL’S PEAK (1pt e/w – 6/1 Hills)
Although collateral form points to Ya Karim being a more than worthy favourite for this race, there is every chance DEVIL’S PEAK has just as much, if not more to offer despite his greater experience. He was demonstrably unprepared for his debut at Newmarket before being unlucky not to get off the mark at the second attempt behind a Godolphin-owned rival at Haydock over 1m. His first start on an all-weather surface next time out did not go to plan, but being back on turf should help; the yard have also recorded a 14-point profit to a level stake with their runners at Yarmouth.
2.30 Yarmouth – SON OF SARABI (1pt e/w – 12/1 generally)
There has been a significant drift on SON OF SARABI this morning, but Jonathan Portman’s charge is on a seriously dangerous mark given he has contested some very strong races, and finished second on three occasions. His runner-up show on debut came in the Brockelsby at Doncaster, while he was then behind subsequent Listed winners Havana Hurricane and Ardisia on his next two starts. The son of Cable Bay was also second on his handicap debut at York off 3lb higher when only beaten half-a-length, his drop in the weights having come since finishing down the field in the Super Sprint and a highly competitive Goodwood nursery. This is much easier, so while market signals are a worry, he should be bang there if neat his best this season.
2.52 Musselburgh – PARISIAC (1pt e/w – 4/1 generally)
Jack Nicholls’ 5lb claim could make all the difference for PARISIAC, who has three wins this year, improving throughout the season at the age of six. Iain Jardine’s charge won over course and distance on soft going two starts back, beating a few of these rivals, but if anything it is his fourth at York last time out which stand out most, as he did so in a field of 18 under a 5lb penalty. He gets to race off 2lb lower today, which does not even factor in Nicholls’ claim, with good ground being of little concern despite his win coming on soft.
3.52 Musselburgh – LEXINGTON BELLE (1pt e/w – 13/2 generally)
There are slight ground queries about all of the major players in this market, which ensures that, leaving calculations to the best-treated horse, LEXINGTON BELLE appeals most. Alice Haynes’ four-year-old had a slow start to the season given her first two races came after 125+-day breaks, with the daughter of Belardo having a terrible record fresh. Since then, she was third in very tricky conditions at Sandown before a close fourth at Haydock at the end of last month. All of those runs have showed her building gradually back to something near her best, and she is now 1lb below her last winning rating.
