2.30 Fontwell – PATH OF STARS (1pt e/w – 10/1 bet365)
With the favourite in this novices’ handicap hurdle having only won his first race at the 16th attempt last time out, this could be a good opportunity for PATH OF STARS, a four-year-old who has untapped potential at a lower level. Getting 2lb on weight-for-age terms means she is effectively 4lb better off for her rallying fourth-placed effort at Cartmel last time out, continuing her relative improvement on a sounder surface. On better terms, and with a greater possibility of improving than most of her rivals, she looks a good value play.
3.18 Leicester – PULL THE RUG (1pt e/w – 5/1 bet365)
In three maiden and novice starts, PULL THE RUG successively bumped into America Queen, second in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes next time out after her debut, recent Ayr Listed winner Chairmanfourtimes, and Saturday’s Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes heroine Catching The Moon. Those have all proven to be serious contested and she went off favourite for the middle of those three races, being beaten less than three lengths. Her third of nine on nursery debut was more than respectable over 5f last time, and she should prove to be better over this 6f trip. Off the same mark and with reasonable expectations that slower ground should be fine, she is up to winning this heat.
4.30 Leicester – DESERT SPRING (1pt e/w – 11/2 generally)
John & Thady Gosden have enjoyed a 29% strike rate at Leicester over the last five seasons from just 49 runners. DESERT SPRING returns after a long layoff having looked extremely green on her debut at Kempton last season, but that was over 7f and she has much more of a middle distance pedigree. She might be contesting a hot enough contest here, but favourite Majaz is on a long run of second places, and with Desert Spring hailing from a family including Group 1 winner Coronet, this step up to 1m2f could bring about vast improvement with it being expected she will be ready to fire after her 327-day break.
5.45 Fairyhouse – NUEVO SLOVO (1pt e/w 4 places – 16/1 Ladbrokes/Coral)
Having been a 125/1 shot for the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, NUEVO SLOVO certainly exceeded expectations when running on into sixth of the 23 runners after being forced to wait for room. With this Listed race unlikely to house any with as much potential as that royal meeting event, and with the step up to 6f a likely positive for John O’Donoghue’s runner, he looks a big price for one who has proven he has a significant amount of ability for this level. His Ayr maiden success came against a now 87-rated filly, so he possesses more than one piece of from which looks handy in this company.
