1.15 Newmarket – TORITO (1pt e/w – 14/1 Hills)
None of the three-year-olds’ form convinces significantly here and it may be the Damysus’ stable and ownermate TORITO is a value alternative among the older half of this field. The five-year-old has evidently proved difficult to keep fit, returning once again after a break of more than 100 days. However, he has twice placed at Royal Ascot in Listed and Group company, while also finishing third in a 13-runner handicap after 317 days off when conceding 4lb to the winner, Liberty Lane, who opposes here. That rival won the Cambridgeshire over course and distance by the end of the season, but Torito was ahead of him on his only run this term, having come off a year-long break, so if he is at all ready for this contest, he could easily have the ability to feature.
3.00 Newmarket – OXAGON (1pt e/w – 10/1 Hills)
Proven Group 1 form is put to the test by Gstaad and Zavateri here, but collaterally, OXAGON is out to frank some as well. John & Thady Gosden’s charge was value for more than a one-length defeat in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in which the ground looked much tackier than the official good. The winner has confirmed it to be a high quality contest though, subsequently taking the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere far more comfortably, and the quicker ground here should play to Oxagon’s strengths,as the cut appeared to blunt any turn of foot last time. He had previously got off the mark at the second attempt by eight lengths at Sandown, suggesting he could be very useful.
3.15 York – GWEEDORE (1pt e/w – 33/1 Betfair/Paddy Power)
Despite the smallest field being 17 in this 6f handicap since 2017, no horse has won from a double-figure draw, ensuring a low berth is paramount to success bar a significant reversal of the trend. In the very inside lane, the eight-year-old GWEEDORE could prosper given he is down 7lb since the start of the season. That owes mostly to an 8lb drop for two down-the-field efforts on all-weather surfaces, on which he has never won, but he produced two runner-up efforts returned to turf over 7f at Musselburgh in April. He was then seventh of 25 in the Ayr Silver Cup after 154 days off, but that was a perfectly respectable run, and the eighth, Rousing Encore, has won since having been part of the same group in running. Despite being 2lb better off with that rival, and off the same weights as Binhareer, favourite here, for just a quarter-length deficit in that contest, the selection is a vastly bigger price and has a plum draw.
3.40 Newmarket – REVEREND HUBERT (1pt e/w – 7/1 Coral/Ladbrokes)
Charles Byrnes won this in 2022 with a handicap blot and though REVEREND HUBERT arrives here off the back of a victory, he also looks very well-in on ratings. That is literally the case too, as he receives just a 4lb winners’ penalty for gliding home by eight lengths in the Cesarewitch Trial three weeks ago when he would have gone up 10lb for any other handicap contest subsequently. The combination of good ground and 2m2f looks to be ideal for him on the flat, and given he reached a mark of 144 over fences, 83 on the flat looks light. Even from the widest draw in stall 21, he looks well-weighted to take advantage.
