1.30 Doncaster – BLUE STORM (1pt e/w – 12/1 generally)
This 5f handicap could prove ideal for BLUE STORM to bounce back to form for Gemma Tutty. The son of Blue Point has some notable performances to his name, landing the 3YO Dash at Epsom in 2024 before finishing second in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot, while his last win came off a mark of 99 at Haydock last season. This year has been much tougher off raised marks, but there were signs of life in the Haydock race he won in 2024 when fourth of ten, in between two lesser runs. He is forgiven those though, as his best form comes with cut in the ground, while his hold up style is ideal for Doncaster. Off a rating of just 95 now, 4lb below his last winning mark, he could be ready to get his head in front again.
1.45 Cheltenham – EASY LOVE (1pt e/w – 25/1 Ladbrokes)
Though this will prove competitive given the depth of Irish competition, the mare EASY LOVE is worth chancing to finish in the frame. You would be over 30 points in profit for backing Anthony Honeyball’s October runners over the last five years and the selection should prove hardy enough to stay this 3m trip among a pack of novice hurdlers for which that is a question mark. She was a point-to-point winner over 3m before racing in bumpers, while she was third in the Listed mares’ bumper at Sandown in March. She followed that up by winning on her hurdling debut over 2m5f at Fontwell, but while that race was ordinary, the runner-up has beaten a member of this line-up since. Harry Cobden steps into the saddle, a positive as he has a 25% strike rate when riding for Honeyball.
3.10 Newbury – WECHAAD (1pt e/w – 6/1 generally)
Charlie Appleby and Godolphin had well-beaten favourites in this race in 2021 and 2022 and Time To Turn did not exactly emphasise his suitability for soft ground in France last time. He can be turned over by the improving WECHAAD for Roger Varian. A son of Oasis Dream, he has steadily stepped forward all season, ultimately getting off the mark at the fourth attempt at Doncaster last month. That was only in a nursery, but he did so off a mark of 82 by 3¼ lengths while also experiencing “soft” in the going description for the first time. This race’s conditions may well prove ideal for this progressive type from a family the owners know very well.
4.25 Doncaster – ALPHA CRUCIS (1pt e/w – 9/2 generally)
Second on his last two outings, this looks a likely race for ALPHA CRUCIS to belatedly get his head in front. Gary & Josh Moore’s five-year-old won twice on heavy last season, but despite only one run on soft or worse this term, has maintained his form admirably. He was fourth in this last season off 2lb lower, but has looked an improved model the last twice, bumping into a smart one at Sandown two starts back, then finding 1m on good-to-soft only slightly too sharp when second again. The step back up to 1m2f, coupled with the even slower ground, are ideal and Ashley Lewis’ 5lb claim can only help on his way back to the winners’ enclosure.
