1.50 Newmarket – DAYTONA (1pt e/w – 7/1 bet365)
A flying start to his career was curtailed last time, but DAYTONA was on a trajectory to contend for top Ballydoyle juvenile honours prior to a weaker effort in France in August. However, relatively speaking, O’Brien’s runners were not firing at the time, certainly in Group company, and his son of Wootton Bassett could easily prove better judged on his opening two starts, in which he won easily on debut at Gowran Park, and then won a Listed race over this 1m trip by 3¼ lengths without being hard pressed. The runner-up bolted in himself in a Group 3 next time out and Daytona’s own career could get right back on track in this contest.
3.15 Haydock – EL MATADOR (1pt e/w – 7/1 Coral/Ladbrokes)
Three-year-olds have dominated this handicap, winning seven of the last nine renewals. Ralph Beckett’s EL MATADOR stands out among the age group’s contenders this year, with the yard having struck a bit of form after a tricky patch, with four winners from their last 15 runners. The selection won two novice events to begin this campaign at Salisbury and Chepstow before falling short in handicap company, but on both handicap starts he has been short of room approaching a crucial stage of the race. He was staying on well to finish his most recent handicap over 7f at Doncaster, from which a 2lb drop in the handicap for a three-length seventh of 16 looks generous, and the step up to 1m could easily be in his favour too.
3.40 Newmarket – REAL GAIN (1pt e/w – 14/1 5 places Ladbrokes)
A less competitive edition of the Cambridgeshire than usual and REAL GAIN could profit for Richard Hughes. With the ground likely to be good at its slowest, a draw in stall 22 down the stands side is likely to be beneficial and the five-year-old, who is unexposed for his age, is back on a mark he can absolutely win off if near his best from September 2023. That career best effort came over course and distance when winning by 5½ lengths at this meeting and he is only 4lb higher now. An encouraging effort over 1m at Goodwood back in August after over a year off could well have put him right for this and the extra furlong is also a potential positive.
5.55 Newmarket – PELLITORY (1pt e/w – 25/1 4 places Betfair/Paddy Power)
The concluding Newmarket handicap is another in which three-year-olds have overperformed and PELLITORY looks overpriced for James Owen. Another trainer whose runners are winning at a useful rate, his son of Sergei Prokofiev got off the mark for the season in good style back in April, with that form bearing out well over the course of this flat campaign. He is without a win since, but has witnessed exulted company, often equipping himself well in Listed and Group company without quite making the places, as was the case when only beaten two lengths in fifth in York’s 6f Garrowby Stakes three weeks ago. He appears to be better suited by 7f on balance though and is 3lb lower than for his only handicap run this year. The highest draw could prove useful too.
