2.25 Newmarket – MONOCEROS (1pt win – 11/4 bet365)
A winner at Newmarket on debut back in August, Charlie Appleby’s MONOCEROS failed to build on that when beaten at odds-on at Leicester next time out in a novice stakes event. Looking to bounce back to winning ways on Thursday, the Godolphin raider returns to Flat HQ and is aiming to hand the team a third win in this race in as many years. He will have to give weight away to all his rivals here, but he is sure to improve for his second run last time out and can get the better of Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Dark Shore, who has finished second his last two starts.
3.25 Listowel – PUTURHANDSTOGETHER (1pt win – 8/1 William Hill)
Joseph O’Brien’s PUTURHANDSTOGETHER was a facile winner of the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival back in March, but could only finish third in the Grade 1 juvenile at Aintree. Down the field in the Galway Hurdle he was last seen improving on that effort at Gowran Park. Now, with the National Hunt season around the corner, the JP McManus-owned raider will be eager to find some form and he will look to give bags of weight away to his rivals here, but is capable of doing so. Lining up off a mark of 140, if he can recapture the form he showed at Cheltenham then he should just be simply too good for his rivals here.
3.35 Newmarket – DISTANT STORM (1pt win – 5/4 generally)
A short-head winner on debut at Newmarket, where he got the better of the highly thought of Constitution River from Aidan O’Brien’s yard, DISTANT STORM was next seen competing in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York. Sent off favourite for that contest, the Godolphin raider could only finish a well beaten third, so he’s on a comeback mission in the Somerville Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket at 3.35pm on Thursday. He was pretty keen during that York contest, so he needs to settle better here, and if a return to Newmarket can see him produce his best then he can bound to glory here and record his first Group success before a tilt at a Classic next season.
4.10 Newmarket – EAST INDIA DOCK (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill)
A former German Derby winner, Palladium has often flattered to deceive on the track, so can be taken on at short odds in the 4.10pm at Newmarket, while former classy stayer Live Your Dream returns to the track after over 700 days, so he should improve for the run. So, the one to side with is James Owen’s EAST INDIA DOCK, who has been mixing hurdles and the flat in recent times and the Triumph Hurdle third has already picked up a Chester Cup win this season. Last seen finishing sixth in the Northumberland Plate, he could be the sort of performer to relish this galloping test and if he can adopt front-running tactics then he could well get the others out of their comfort zone and pull clear late on.
