3.00 Goodwood – ATLANTIC GAMBLE (1pt e/w – 14/1 Hills)
Currently on his last winning mark of 81, ATLANTIC GAMBLE is expected to go off shorter than his early showing in this Goodwood handicap. William Knight’s four-year-old is experienced for his age, but the market looks to have overreacted to a perceived downturn in form this season. However, his two wins on turf have both come on soft ground or worse, and the only time he has met a similar surface this campaign was when beaten a neck into third at Yarmouth’s Racing League event in July when perhaps unlucky to be carried left by the winner. Off the same rating, and over an easier 1m here at Goodwood, he is of major interest.
3.35 Goodwood – SADDADD (1pt e/w – 10/3 Hills)
Three-year-olds do not have a great record in this Listed event, but the older contenders look risky propositions, including favourite Ancient Wisdom, who can be very in and out in terms of form. On the other hand, SADDADD arrives bang in form for Roger Varian, taking a competitive Sandown handicap in cosy fashion last time out on soft going. That outlined him as having Group race potential and he is closely related to his owners’ Almaqam, the Brigadier Gerard Stakes winner over Ombudsman earlier this season. His proven form on the ground is a big positive to his chances and there may be big things to come from him.
4.15 Perth – MARS HARPER (1pt e/w – 9/2 generally)
A run of three straight 0s on the formbook would make any punter nervous, but it could well prove handy to forgive MARS HARPER, who has tended to contest some strong contests, which this five-runner handicap is not. He was fourth in the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival off this mark back in March before finding the Grand Sefton over the National fences too much to handle off 2lb higher. Competitive handicaps at Punchestown and Galway have followed, but that has served to make his life easier regarding his mark and although he would appear to be the Elliott second string, Benjamin Macey’s 7lb claim can be put to good use.
4.23 Limerick – YOU OUGHTA KNOW (1pt e/w – 6/1 Ladbrokes/Coral/Hills)
It is early days for his chasing career, but YOU OUGHTA KNOW could well possess the potential so may of his fellow Willie Mullins-trained stablemates do when stepping up in trip. The seven-year-old won by a wide margin at Wexford last time, seemingly having put his previous chase form behind him, and his fourth in a Listed novice hurdle at Perth towards the end of last season makes him of serious interest back up to 3m. His early chasing experiences have all come at 2m4f or below, but he looks more than ready for a greater test of stamina and a rating of 137 is his to take advantage of.
