1:20 Goodwood – Coral Kincsem Handicap (Class 2) (3yo) – Marharba Ghaiyyath 7/1 1pt EW 5 places

Mark Johnston won this with Communique in 2018 and Qaader in 2021, who both came off the back of excellent efforts on the July course like MARHABA GHAIYYATH, who was second in the same valuable handicap that Comminuque won en-route.

He sat in behind a stablemate making all there on the rail, but was just collared late on by the well backed King’s Charter, who looked well ahead of his mark having come around runners from rear to win by three quarters of a length.

A six pound rise makes things trickier for Marhaba Ghaiyyath, but a mark of 95 still looks workable on the balance of his previous form, as he went down a head to Topteam when unsuitably position at Chester, pulling clear of the third with the winner going in again since now rated 10lbs higher.

He’s only blotted his copybook once and is evidently on an upward curve, and with William Buick on board for the first time it would be a surprise to see him out of the frame under a prominent ride, with stablemate Thunder Wonder likely playing the hare.

1:55 Goodwood – Markel Richmond Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (2yo) – Chicago Call 40/1 0.5pt EW 4 places

Last year’s Richmond winner Black Forza came off the back of a Fairyhouse Novice success having improved from debut, and CHICAGO CALL can follow suit. The Oasis Dream colt evidently stepped forward from debut like most of the yards do having ran green, and there was plenty to like about the way he strode two lengths clear from the Aidan O’Brien trained favourite Charles Fort.

It remains to be seen whether he has the ability to figure at this level against colts already proven in Royal Ascot company, but only three of the last ten winners had previously raced at Royal Ascot which suggests those more unexposed 2yos shouldn’t be written off, and Billy Loughnane bids to improve his record for the yard (2-1-0) who are two from seven here.

3:45 Goodwood – Buccellati Handicap (Class 3) (3yo 0-95) – Brosay 14/1 1pt EW 5 places

BROSAY’s record in handicaps below class two level reads 122 and having acquitted himself well in higher grades of late, this drop back in quality can see him return to the winners enclosure over a winning C&D.

Having landed a 15k novice here last season for Diego Dias, he switched yards to Paul Attwater and delivered first time out at Southwell, before backing that up next time out at Lingfield when beaten a head giving 8lbs to one now rated 11lbs higher.

The same one beat him 3/4L at Kempton, but that was a career best effort on RPR’s and he backed that up with a career best effort on turf when a half a length second in class two company at Sandown. That form’s worked out nicely, as the third has improved 14lbs having won next time out before finishing third in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes, and he looked an unlucky loser back at Ascot when a 3/4L fourth last time out having raced on the unfavourable part of the track.

Brosay was only beaten five lengths at Royal Ascot on ground quick enough for him, and while he was beaten the same distance in a 32k handicap at Southwell, he was short of room at a crucial stage there and finished on the bridle.

The return to a winning C& combined with the drop in class can see him acquit himself well here, providing he’s granted a smooth passage from stall fourteen.

15:45 Buccellati Handicap

4:20 Goodwood – Phase Eight Nursery Handicap (Class 2) (2yo) – Victorious One 9/2 2pt WIN

Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan landed this with Mr Chaplin last year and VICTORIOUS ONE is taken to follow up.

Horses who ran at Epsom last time out have a solid record in this Nursery, and Victorious One ran a solid race to finish second by half a length in first time blinkers, pulling three lengths clear of the third. The winner had previously been beaten four lengths by Zavateri on debut who’s franked the form in winning the July Stakes and the Vintage Stakes.

It was concerning to see him beaten at 1/2F, and he was also touched off at 2/5F at Salisbury on his penultima start, but the winner was given an excellent ride from the front and he ran a huge race on Tuesday to finish a two length fourth to Zavateri in the Richmond.

His debut run here over six furlongs has worked out too, as he was beaten three lengths into second by Jel Pepper despite coming from rear, and that was one beaten two lengths in the July Stakes next time out by Zavateri.

While he appears to keep on bumping into one, the fact that in each of his races they’ve all ran around Zavateri suggests they’re smart ones, and off a mark of 85 it would be surprising not to see him getting his head in front in Nursery company at a track he’s already got experience on.
