Glorious Goodwood arrives on Tuesday, and with it the ITV7. Tuesday’s prize is worth £100,000 to the winner, and we have provided our selections to try and land the spoils.
Race 1 – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap
Enfjaar is an obvious favourite and may well have more to come, but the race worked out in his favour at York last time, while plenty of those who tried to make ground from the year did not get such luck in running. That may not be the case this time, and it is worth giving a chance to DUAL IDENTITY, four of whose five wins have come at this trip and who has broadly been in good form since needing his comeback at Epsom. He could easily have won back-to-back races at Sandown and shaped when ninth to Enfjaar last time that this trip would still be fine and he is due a lot more luck during the race here.
Race 2 – Free Digital Race Card At raceday-ready.com Nursery Handicap
Art Market might have more to come at this trip after winning on his nursery debut last time, but they four of the five-strong field finished within a length and the form has otherwise yet to be tested. Instead, handicap debutant HIGH ON HOPE is taken to come out on top, as he did well to be beaten just a short-head at Haydock over this distance last time. That form looks pretty solid, a mark of 78 looking well within range, and he can fend these off.
Race 3 – Lady Jane Bethell Memorial Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap
A tricky puzzle to mix in with the Goodwood contests. The last three winners of this contend again (including the two divisional winners in 2022), though preference is for DOGGED to go back-to-back. He won this last year off 1lb higher, but has begun to find his feet again in recent starts. The quicker surface should suit and Alex Garven won on him in July of last year at Nottingham too.
Race 4 – HKJC World Pool Vintage Stakes (Group 2)
There is not a lot to choose between these from a form or visual perspective, with the market ordered by trainer reputation, with those in the idle upgraded for having run in similar company. That has led Clive Cox’s ARABIAN SUN to being overpriced. The yard are fairly good at judging which juveniles to step up in class and when: in the last decade in this race they have had a 16/1 fourth and a 12/1 second, with that runner-up, Positive, bumping into Pinatubo in 2019. It is unlikely there will be a blot of that nature in here and the son of Saxon Warrior looks likely to be suited by stepping up to 7f.
Race 5 – British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice Stakes
None of the newcomers make enough appeal, and so the daughter of Advertise, QUEEN OF GOOD NEWS, who was second here in June over 6f, is the selection. She should be suited by the step up to 7f having left that impression when green on debut and when staying on or second last time out.
Race 6 – HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2)
Kinross may be vulnerable to younger, up-and-coming opponents here. Noble Dynasty is only a year younger, but significantly less experienced, but he holds English Oak on Newmarket running from May, even though Ed Walker’s charge is steeply on the upgrade. All could find themselves susceptible to a late surge from TIBER FLOW though, who won well when stepped back up to 7f at Haydock last time, when not getting a clear run until late in the day. That suggests this will now be his ideal distance and the race should set up nicely with plenty of pace in the field.
Race 7 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1)
There are no viable alternatives to KYPRIOS, who has already won back his Gold Cup title at Ascot and can do the same in the Goodwood Cup here. He could be beatable if a similar situation unfolds to last year when Quickthorn stole it from the front, especially as a pacier rival could test him at this 2m trip, but he simply looks comfortably the most talented here if arriving on song.
