Glorious Goodwood 2026 arrives to bless the summer flat season at the end of July. Five days of racing take place in Sussex, with prizes such as the Goodwood Cup and Sussex Stakes among the riches on offer.
Matty Sutcliffe has analysed the available ante-post cards with the glorious meeting around the corner. He has produced a quartet of best bets for a lucky 15 across the five days.
World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Qirat 16/1
Qirat was a shock 150/1 winner of the Sussex Stakes here last season when pitched in as a pacemaker for Field Of Gold. The jockeys in behind got it completely wrong there, as Qirat and Serengeti were going slow enough despite their duties. While it was a fluke, it’s undeniable that he still quickened well enough in the final stages and even when Rosallion came too him, he was able to hold him off and pull out more.
He couldn’t replicate those tactics next time out at York, but it was still a credible performance with the race favouring those on the nearside. Since then, he’s failed to match that form until equipped with a tongue-tie in the Criterion last time, where he gamely fended off the two short priced favourites Never So Brave and Saber Strike.
I thought that latest effort was very impressive, and he could be severely underestimated once more here. I doubt they’ll go to what looks a hot Sussex Stakes, particularly given his record at this trip 12112251. His course form reads 111, and given he arrives on the back of a career best RPR he has to be considered again here.
Qatar Sussex Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Opera Ballo 3/1
This looks an excellent renewal of the Sussex Stakes in which my heart would side with the unbeaten Bow Echo to further stamp his authority amongst the milers. However, my head suggests that Goodwood should bring out a chunk of improvement from Opera Ballo given his style of racing.
The Ghaiyyaith colt was four from five was a three year old last season, with the sole defeat coming when far too keen in the 2000 Guineas. He was keen again next time out despite the hood, but was still classy enough to defeat the subsequent Coronation Cup winner Bay City Roller.
His British seasonal debut saw him comfortably make all at Sandown in the bet365 Mile, beating the well backed Field of Gold and the then unbeaten Zeus Olympios. He was much more settle there, as he was in the Queen Anne Stakes, however he went far too quick out in front. Despite setting brisk fractions, he was only collared late on by a pair coming from rear and it was a testament to his ability to be able to still be in the finish.
If continuing to mature in his race, he could be incredibly tough to peg back around Goodwood and will make it a hard test for the three-year-olds.
Coral Golden Mile (Class 2) (3yo+) – River King 14/1
Richard Hannon won this with Beat Le Bon back in 2019 and the lightly raced four year old River King can repeat the feat. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet, having caught the eye on debut back in 2024.
He was only seen once as a two year old, and he made a promising seasonal return last year when third to Remmooz, now rated 111 after his Group 3 win last month. He was disappointing at short odds twice thereafter, as he was on seasonal debut at Chepstow when beaten a neck at 8/13F returning from a gelding operation and a 339-day layoff.
However, the pair pulled six lengths clear of the third there and the winner, who’d had the benefit of a run, has won since now rated 10lbs higher. River King got off the mark in good style this season when bolting up at Newbury, and he posted an excellent fifth in the Buckingham Palace Stakes.
He led the field on the far-side until a furlong out there, before hanging right under pressure and opening the stand side up for the challengers. He was only beaten three lengths, and I suspect this right-handed track should suit him given how he hung at Ascot on the straight track.
The step back up to a mile can suit, and she’s bred to improve past this mark being a half sister to the 2014 Matron Stakes third Tobann.
King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Jm Jungle 16/1
Everything this season for Jm Jungle looks to have pointed back to this contest which he gamely won last season, and I suspect he’ll be plenty shorter come the day.
Having won and placed in multiple strong handicaps throughout his career, including the Symphony, Dash and Portland Handicap, he graduated into group company successfully to win this at 14/1.
He was third in the City Walls Stakes en-route there, which bodes well given he ran to a pound higher on RPR’s in the race last time out when beaten half a length by Redorange. Prior to that he ran a solid race in the King Charles III Stakes only beaten three lengths, finishing half a length behind Night Raider who is the 4/1 favourite for this race.
He’s won at the Goodwood Festival twice, and is evidently suited to a sharper track. With rain forecast next week, softening ground would play into his strengths for all he handles a sound surface fine and he looks primed for a repeat bid.
