The Stewards’ Cup headlines the final day of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday. The heritage handicap will see 28 sprinters burn up the Sussex turf in search of a place in history.
Matty Sutcliffe has a tip in that race at 20/1, as well as two others to follow on the weekend card.
Goodwood Racing Tips (Saturday 1 August)
Punters have seven more chances to make a profit at Glorious Goodwood, with the Stewards’ Cup one of the most interesting betting puzzles of the flat season. Matty Sutcliffe takes on that challenge, with hi three tips including one in the big handicap.
13:50 Goodwood – Highclere Castle Gin Summer Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (3yo+) – Valedictory 4/1 1pt WIN
John Gosden won this with Sweet William off 95 in 2023 and Trawlerman off 97 in 2022, with both of those going to be talented stayers, Trawlerman a two time Group 1 at that.
Valedictory looks to be moulding into the next Clarehaven staying star and can follow his stablemates path. The son of Cracksman was seen just once as a two year old, staying on well for a neck third at Doncaster over a mile.
He’s evidently taken a while to come to hand at home, as he was seen just twice after until making his seasonal debut this term at four. He was twice a beaten favourite, but like both Trawlerman and Sweet William, he’s improved sharply for the application of headgear.
He took a course and distance 0-105 handicap in good style in May, a race Gosden won with the subsequent Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami in 2023 and the Copper Horse Stakes winner French Master in 2025.
Valedictory skipped Ascot, but backed up his win earlier this month with a game success in the valuable Betway Trophy. He was only risen 3lbs for that effort, and he’s of major interest back here given a mark of 95 could still severely underestimate him.
14:25 Goodwood – Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+) – In My Teens 9/1 1pt EW 3 places
The obvious choice in here is Al Aasy, who’s won this race the last twice, but time catches up with everyone and it may pay to chance the filly In My Teens, who’s on a par with Al Aasy on adjusted ratings.
The Camelot filly was promising on the level prior to a failed jumping career, with form figures of 2122. She made a quiet return to this code in May when in rear throughout at the Curragh, staying on late under tender handling.
However, next time out, she produced a wildly impressive performance stepped up to this trip, bolting up seven lengths in a 52k handicap at the Curragh. The handicapper raised her to 111, unsurprisingly given the time matched the visual suspicion that it was a very smart performance.
She looks to get the fast gallop she needs here, and she could be anything on the flat with Oisin Murphy taking the ride.
15:35 Goodwood – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+) – West Acre 20/1 1pt EW 6 places
An incredibly difficult race to whittle down as per usual, but West Acre is chanced to bring his smart Group form to fruition for only his second start in handicap company.
The son of Mehmas looked a nice type late in 2024 as a two-year-old, finishing the year with a six-length route at Southwell. He improved on that when second to Symbol Of Honour at Meydan, before landing a Group 2 and a Group 3 in good style, displaying a smart turn of foot.
He’s winless since, but he’s still posted some good efforts, such as catching the eye when short of room at Southwell giving chunks of weight away to the field. Back at Meydan, he was a four-length fifth to Cover Up, giving 2lbs away to the subsequent Group 2 winner.
His two-length third next time out reads well, as he reversed the earlier form with Symbol Of Honour who ran to a career best RPR when winning the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes last time out. He was only a length behind Two Tribes there and is a pound better off with him, so he appears overpriced on that evidence with the second favourite.
The first-time blinkers equipped to sharpen him up from the gates look the correct move and while he does have a lay off to contend with, he’s gone well fresh in the past and this big field, quick pace scenario should suit him from a favoured draw.
