Glorious Goodwood has begun in thrilling fashion. Day three’s contests feature the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, but there are eight races to enjoy in all.

13:50 Goodwood – Coral Kincsem Heritage Handicap (Class 2) (3yo) – Ciarrai Abu 5/1 1pt WIN
Despite the tendency to edge left under pressure, Ciarrai Abu has form figures of 6141 at right handed tracks including a maiden win here in May, and the form of his length fourth here on phis penultimate effort has worked out well.
The Study Of Man gelding returned to the winners enclosure at Ascot earlier this month, staying on strongly down the outside to fend off the favourite Crest Of Fire, pulling clear of the third, despite hanging left throughout.
He appears to save plenty for himself in his races so a 6lbs rise may underestimate him, and his breeding matches the visual suspicion that this extra two furlongs will suit from a stall that’s birthed two of the last three winners of this race.
14:25 Goodwood – Markel Richmond Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 1) (2yo) – Mr Macartney 50/1 0.5pt EW 5 places
I thought Mr Macartney ran a huge race at Royal Ascot in the Norfolk Stakes despite his triple figure odds, and could well go under the radar here.
He was outpaced in rear early on toward the unfavourable far side, staying on well to finish third best of the drawn in single figures. I thought the headway he made was significantly impressive, and visually it looked as if he would improve for this step up in trip.
His two below par performances came on left handed track including failing to handle the Newmarket track on his second start, but aside from that he’s ran three solid races including landing a valuable Juddmonte EBF Restricted maiden at Leicester.
He was a huge eye-catcher in the National Stakes at Sandown when a staying on two length fifth, and that form has worked out in places with the rubber up filling the same spot twice since in the Coventry and July Stakes.
That one re-opposes, but this step up in trip again on a sharper track can suit and should he be able to break away quicker this time, he can outrun his odds for an in-form yard.
15:00 Goodwood – Maison Perrier Gordon Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo) – Enceladus 100/30 1.5pt WIN
Enceladus bids to emulate Merchant in landing the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot before winning this, and that form has already worked out very well.
The Sea The Stars colt covered plenty of ground racing wide throughout under Ryan Moore, but once he kicked off the bend the response was immediate and despite the late surging of Al Azd and Believed, he held on gamely for an impressive success.
The second followed up in remarkable style from an 8lbs higher mark next time out now rated 109, the third was beaten half a length in listed contest, and the fifth won nicely next time out too.
He’s proven on multiple occasions now he has battling qualities, he’s unexposed at this trip and given the multiple graded entries he adopts, he’s quite clearly a colt well worth pitching into this level.
16:10 Goodwood – Buccellati Handicap (Class 3) (3yo 0-95) – Call Margot 16/1 1pt EW 5 places
Call Margot failed to perform against her elders on a softer surface at Hamilton last time out when reportedly running flat, but if we can draw a line through that then she’s a strong chance based on her luckless defeat in the three year old dash at Epsom.
She travelled effortlessly well from rear there but excruciatingly had to suffer for room at multiple stages, unsurprisingly clocking the fastest final furlong. The winner followed up at York next time out and is 15/2 for this race, but has a 12lbs unfavourable swing in the weights with Call Margot.
She’s also a pound better off with the third, She’s Got A Brother, who’s also 15/2. Given they both raced prominently whereas Call Margot came from rear, her performance can be easily upgraded and she looks to have an excellent chance in a race that looks sure to suit her patient style.
