Aidan O’Brien’s Kyprios is one of nine horses entered for Tuesday’s Goodwood Cup, which is the feature race on day one of Glorious Goodwood. A winner of this event back in 2022, the Ballydoyle superstar stayer showed he was still the dominant force in the 2m division when winning the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last month and he’s the star attraction in a potentially decent renewal next week.
A narrow neck winner over Stradivarius two years ago, Kyprios was forced to miss last season’s race through injury, but he’s racked up three wins from three starts in 2024 and looks to be the one they all have to beat. Likely to be sent off a hot favourite, the six-year-old son of Galileo could face some lively adversaries in a race jam-packed with stamina-laden stars.
Fifth in the Gold Cup last month, Andrew Balding’s Coltrane is one of the standout names in the list of runners, but while he had previously claimed victory in the Sagaro Stakes he was no match for Kyprios and he could only finish third behind Quickthorn in the 2023 Goodwood Cup.
A former winner of the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood, John & Thady Gosden’s Gregory was another down the field in seventh in the Gold Cup, but a return to the south coast racecourse could see him play a notable role and that four-year-old is likely to be one of the leading contenders for this event.

Tue 23 Jul 2024Unable to land any sort of blow in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, Continuous is another O’Brien-trained runner that could take his chance in this event. The former St Leger hero will be stepping back into staying company, but he does hold a King George entry for Saturday’s showpiece at Ascot.
Alan King’s Trueshan won the 2021 Goodwood Cup and was last seen winning the Coral Marathon at Sandown Park, but we know for sure that the Barbury Castle inmate won’t take his chance in the line-up if the ground is quick.
Ebor Handicap runner-up Sweet William ran a blinder to finish third in the Gold Cup and he will be another potential runner for the Gosden team, while Al Qareem, Point Lonsdale and Tashkhan complete the nine-strong list.
