Goodwood & Sandown Racing Tips - Matthew Sutcliffe's Best Bets for Saturday 29 August

Saturday provides a bumper edition of ITV Racing, with nine races live on terrestrial TV from two tracks. Five take place at Goodwood‘s feature card, with a quartet from Sandown to enjoy too.

Matty Sutcliffe has selections at both venues through the afternoon. He has three tips from the Sussex track, and one from Surrey to follow.

Goodwood Racing Tips (Saturday 29 August 2026)

Goodwood’s feature is the Group 2 Celebration Mile on Saturday. Matty has a tip in that race, as well as two others beforehand.

13:25 Goodwood – British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (Bands B/C/D) (Qual) (GBB/GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (2yo) – Majestic Flame 11/4 2pt WIN

The market has got this entirely wrong, as the form of Lily Pink is entirely incomparable with that of Majestic Flame, who caught the eye here on debut in a valuable fillies’ maiden.

She raced towards the rear end of midfield under Pat Dobbs, who gave the Pinatubo an educational ride under hands and heels to come home strongly for fifth. This step up in trip can suit, and the form has worked out exceptionally well.

The second, third, fourth and ninth won next time out, and with any natural improvement she should be going very close to winning this unless anything is to come from out of the woodwork.

14:00 Goodwood – Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+) – Addison Grey 10/1 1pt EW 4 places

Addison Grey successfully stepped up to seven furlongs for the first time two weeks ago at Newbury, staying the trip strongly displaying a nice turn of foot.

It’s a surprise they’ve only just stepped him up, given his large stride lengths, and it only takes a glance at the Racing Post’s comments that repeatedly say ‘kept on’ to decipher whether he needs stepping up in trip.

Clive Cox has won this race twice since 2019 including with Aratus, who won the same Newbury handicap Addison Grey did en-route. He was only nudged up 4lbs for that career best effort and he looks well handicapped on some earlier form notably with Double Rush and Far Above Dream.

15:10 Goodwood – Virgin Bet Celebration Mile Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Ebt’s Guard 20/1 1pt EW 3 places

I’m happy to take on Zavateri here as this quick reappearance for a horse only just returning from injury seems like an afterthought, and this has the makings of a surprise result.

Ebt’s Guard will have to improve a chunk to beat some of these, but stepping up into stronger company against some quick sorts could bring out further improvement.

He’s been an admirably consistent handicapper for the yard over the last two seasons, gradually working his way up in the weights. He hasn’t won since taking a Shergar Cup contest, but he ’s remained in strong form this season including a two length third in the valuable Coral Challenge Handicap. He caught the eye when short of room here in the Golden Mile to the far-side rail, and this race should set up well for him at a track he often performs well at.

Sandown Racing Tips (Saturday 29 August 2026)

A duo of Group 3s take place at Sandown on Saturday, but Matty has opted for a selection running in handicap company for his best bet at the track.

14:15 Sandown – Zyn Frontrunner Finish Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105) – Flying Frontier 25/1 1pt EW 4 places

Flying Frontier was delivered late to win this race in 2024 off a 2lbs higher mark and while he was well beaten in this contest last season, he never appeared to be travelling on the softened ground and wasn’t seen again that season.

He’s returned with four lesser efforts this year, but I suspect he’s had some thing keeping him back and I do wonder whether they’re slowly building him back up to peak fitness. He’s caught the eye twice this seasons, including off top-weight at Redcar and over course and distance.

Interestingly, they’ve put him in the Cambridgeshire and he’d need to win this to get into the race under a penalty. His C&D form reads 1194, with the outlier coming on unfavourable going, and while that is a minor concern given the forecast, I’m hoping it’ll stay good enough for him to administer his sharp turn of foot late on.
