17:07 – Societies Welcome At Gowran Park Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This looks a fairly solid maiden for the grade rather than a throwaway opener, with a couple bringing notably strong placed form into it. The Publican’s Son sets the standard on figures after finishing second on his latest start and already showing he can run to a useful level, while Starred has the profile of one who has been knocking on the door and won’t need to improve much to be right there again. Bamako Beach is another with obvious claims after a promising debut second, and Shaws Bay could step forward from a respectable introduction from the inside draw. It may come down to which of the principals handles this yielding surface best over 7f, but there’s enough depth here to make it more than a simple penalty kick for the market leaders.

Top Selections

1. The Publican’s Son

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 28-52 | Rating: 105 | Topspeed: 91

He brings the standout body of form into the race and, bluntly, sets a pretty stiff standard for a maiden. That latest second confirmed he’s still progressing, and his overall profile suggests a colt who has been keeping better company than some of these. A rating of 105 and topspeed of 91 are serious markers in this field, and Joseph O’Brien’s team clearly holds a strong hand here. Draw 10 is not ideal if they go hard early, but over 7f at Gowran he should still have time to find a rhythm. If he reproduces his recent level, he’s the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Bamako Beach – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Jamie Powell | Trainer: M D O’Callaghan | Form: 2- | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 28

At 9/2, Bamako Beach makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where the obvious pair could dominate the market. He shaped well when runner-up on debut and that single run leaves him open to a fair chunk of improvement now returning as a 3yo. M D O’Callaghan’s horses often know their job in these maidens, and Jamie Powell is a positive booking for one who may be ridden handily despite a wider stall. The bare topspeed figure doesn’t tell the whole story because debutants often learn plenty from the experience, and his rating already says he belongs in the argument. He looks the value alternative to the headline names. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

The Publican’s Son is the clear win play on established form and is hard to oppose if running to his mark. For an each-way punt, Bamako Beach appeals as the one most likely to improve enough to get seriously involved. Starred is the obvious danger after a string of solid efforts, while Shaws Bay could outrun his price if building on a decent debut.

17:37 – Thomastown Maiden

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This looks a fair maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably latched on to the trio with the most solid recent evidence. Satoyama sets the standard on price after a promising debut fifth, while Kalir brings the strongest published profile after finishing placed on two of his four starts and shaping well again on return. Hippology is another from the Joseph O’Brien yard who could step forward, and Stellar View has twice shown enough to think a race of this nature is within reach. Beyond those, Dun Aonghasa and Loch Gamhna have bits of form that make them interesting, but plenty of the rest need dramatic improvement. In a 16-runner maiden on easing ground, track position and who improves most from run one to run two or three will matter plenty.

Top Selections

1. Kalir – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Chris Hayes | Trainer: D K Weld | Form: 34-3 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 59

Kalir makes plenty of appeal in a race where the obvious ones all have something to prove. He has the best balance of experience and upside, and that latest third suggests he’s come back in good order. An official mark of 74 is solid in the context of this maiden, and his Topspeed figure of 59 backs up the impression that he has already run to a useful level. Weld runners are rarely overfaced in these events, and Chris Hayes is exactly the sort you want aboard a colt who should be ridden with a bit of patience. Available at 3/1, he looks the percentage call to finally get off the mark.

Bet: WIN

2. Loch Gamhna – 12/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Paddy Harnett | Trainer: Martin Hassett | Form: 03-78 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 67

Loch Gamhna is the one at a price who could easily outrun market expectations. His profile is a bit mixed this season, but that earlier placed effort stands out in the context of this race and his figures are stronger than the odds imply. In fact, a rating of 76 and Topspeed of 67 are right up there with the better numbers on offer, so 12/1 looks a fair each-way punt if he can bounce back on this easier surface. He doesn’t need to improve dramatically to hit the frame, and in a maiden full of unexposed but not necessarily reliable rivals, that counts for plenty.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kalir is the win play because he brings the most dependable recent form and still has scope to find a bit more. For an each-way alternative, Loch Gamhna makes plenty of appeal at double-figure odds given his figures and earlier placed form. Satoyama is the obvious danger, while Stellar View and Hippology are the other ones to keep firmly onside.

18:07 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Vintage Tipple Stakes (Listed Race)

Race Details: 1m 6f | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This looks a tidy Listed staying contest rather than an especially deep one, and the market has understandably centred on Moody, Floresta and Snapretend. Moody arrives unbeaten in two starts for Paddy Twomey and could still have plenty up his sleeve over this trip, while Floresta brings the best official mark to the table and already has smart black-type form. Snapretend is no back number either after a solid return to action and looks the one most likely to capitalise if the principals underperform. The rest have bits and pieces of form, but several need a sizeable step forward to trouble the head of the market. In truth, this feels like a race where class and stamina will decide it, and I’d rather side with the progressive filly than just the established one.

Top Selections

1. Moody – 5/4 with Bet365

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: P Twomey | Form: 21-1 | Rating: 109 | Topspeed: 62

Moody is the obvious starting point and, for once, the obvious one may still be the right one. She has only had three runs, has won two of them, and her reappearance success suggested there is a lot more to come now tackling staying trips in better company. Paddy Twomey doesn’t tilt at races like this without good reason and W J Lee is an eye-catching booking on a filly who looks uncomplicated and progressive. She doesn’t have Floresta’s headline rating yet, but the upside is with her and 5/4 is fair enough if you think this race can still be run to suit an improver. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Snapretend – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 3113-2 | Rating: 110 | Topspeed: 97

Snapretend makes plenty of each-way appeal in a 10-runner field. Joseph O’Brien’s filly returned with a good second, and that run should have sharpened her up nicely for this assignment. She already has a solid profile at this sort of level, her rating of 110 puts her right in the mix, and she looks likely to stay the 1m6f well enough on this yielding ground. Unlike a few of these, she brings both a reliable level of form and a touch of scope, which is a useful combination in a race lacking depth beyond the front three in the betting. At 4/1, she looks the sensible each-way punt. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Moody is the win play, as she looks the progressive one with the most untapped potential. Snapretend is the each-way alternative in a race where the places should be within reach if she runs to her mark. Floresta is the obvious danger on ratings and could easily make this a proper test for the favourite, but she looks short enough for me.

18:38 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes (Listed Race)

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

Faiyum gives this Listed contest a bit of shape and, on the figures, she sets a clear standard. A 120-rated filly with a smart 1121-3 profile is entitled to be a warm order, and Gowran’s stiff enough finish should suit a strong traveller over this trip. The opposition is not deep, but it is not completely toothless either. Joseph O’Brien saddles three, with Sindria the most obvious threat after winning on her return, while Lemsairbat brings solid back-class and a useful topspeed figure. Subsonic is another who arrives on an upward curve after ending last term with a win. Even so, this looks more a race where the favourite’s class should tell than a fiendish puzzle, though the each-way angle is more interesting than the win market.

Top Selections

1. Faiyum – 8/13 with Betfair

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: G M Lyons | Form: 1121-3 | Rating: 120 | Topspeed: 105

She is very hard to oppose. Faiyum brings the standout mark in the field, and that 120 rating puts her well clear of these on paper. The most recent third hardly reads like a setback; if anything, it was the sort of comeback run that should tee her up nicely for a race of this nature. Lyons does well with these improving fillies, and Gary Carroll is an uncomplicated booking for a mare who looks to have the class edge and enough tactical pace for a nine-runner Listed event. At 8/13 she is no giveaway, but sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. Bet type: WIN.

Bet: WIN

2. Sindria – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 8104-1 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 93

If you want to play against the short price for place purposes, Sindria makes the most appeal. She returned with a win from a break, and that suggests there may be a bit more to come from this 4-year-old now she has hit her stride again. Her mark of 103 leaves her with plenty to find with Faiyum, but she does not need to beat the favourite to make 11/2 workable each-way in a nine-runner field with three places on offer. O’Brien is represented in numbers here, but she looks the stable’s cleanest option, and Dylan Browne McMonagle is a positive booking. She holds solid place claims. Bet type: EACH-WAY.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Faiyum is the win play because she has the best form, the best rating and the fewest excuses. For an each-way punt, Sindria looks the sensible alternative after that winning reappearance and should give you a run for your money. Lemsairbat is the obvious danger to the place angle if bouncing back, while Subsonic is not dismissed either.

19:08 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This looks a fairly interesting maiden rather than a deep one, with the market understandably centred on the well-bred, unexposed 3yos. Vauntingly sets the standard on reputation and stable power alone for Joseph O’Brien, while Dark Lucinda and Mathoura add further intrigue on debut from yards that know exactly what is required in this sort of race. Of those with form in the book, Almeiyda is the obvious standout after showing useful promise in two runs last season and bringing the best published rating into the race. The older fillies Pure Valour and Grennanstown Lady don’t make a lot of appeal on what they’ve shown, and Venerini was well beaten first time out. Tactically it may come down to who settles best over this intermediate trip on easing ground.

Top Selections

1. Almeiyda – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Chris Hayes | Trainer: D K Weld | Form: 04- | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 57

I’m happy to side with the one filly here who has actually shown something worthwhile on the track. Almeiyda’s form figures of 04 don’t scream star quality, but that mark of 62 is the best on offer and she shaped as though this sort of trip would suit when last seen. The Weld-Hayes combination in a fillies’ maiden at Gowran is not something I want to be taking lightly, and she has the benefit of experience against several likely types making their debut. At 5/1, she looks a fair price rather than a speculative one, and in a race where plenty could need the outing, that counts for plenty. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Shanala – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

For the each-way angle, Shanala makes more appeal than some of the shorter newcomers because the Murtagh yard tends to have them professionally prepared for these maidens and stall 1 should give Ben Coen options. She’s not the obvious talking horse in the line-up, but this doesn’t look the strongest of fillies’ maidens and a well-schooled newcomer can get involved quickly. With several rivals priced on stable reputation, 5/1 is a workable each-way quote if you think she can be sharp enough first time. She looks the type to travel into it and hit the frame even if one of the more fashionable names proves above average. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Almeiyda is the solid play on known form and gets the vote as the win bet. Shanala is the each-way punt in a 10-runner field where the placed terms give you a bit of cover against an unknown improver. The obvious dangers are Vauntingly and Dark Lucinda, both from powerful yards and both very easy to fancy if strong in the market.

19:38 – Follow Us On Instagram Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This looks a proper 3yo handicap puzzle rather than a deep race full of solid winners, and that usually means siding with the few who arrive with either reliable recent form or the scope to do better. Beau Army sets the standard on what he has been doing lately, having knocked on the door in similar company, while Cause I Like You is another who has been shaping as if a race like this is within reach. Aurora Mist is interesting back in this grade after a fair enough reappearance, and Femme Beauty has a bit more upside than some of these exposed types. Plenty of the rest are either badly out of form or still have something to prove in handicaps, so the market should have this mostly right, but there may still be a bit of each-way value lurking behind the favourite.

Top Selections

1. Beau Army – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Reese Holohan | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: -16662 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 28

Beau Army is the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is simply the right one. He has been running well in defeat, and that latest second suggests this mark of 66 is still workable, especially with just 127 on his back here. Adrian McGuinness does well with these busy, streetwise handicappers and this colt has shown a consistency that most of his rivals can only dream of. He is drawn fine in 8, should travel handily, and in a race lacking depth he looks the runner most likely to give you his form. At 11/4 he is no giveaway, but he is still hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Aurora Mist – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Orla Tynan | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 0554-7 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 56

Aurora Mist makes more appeal than a few shorter in the market as an each-way play. Her form does not scream certainty, but that Topspeed figure of 56 is one of the better ones on offer and her comeback seventh may not be a bad run in the context of this modest contest. Andrew Slattery’s yard can nick races of this nature, and from draw 3 she should be able to get a sensible position without wasting ground. Off 65, she does not need to improve dramatically to get involved, and 6/1 looks fair in a race where the favourite is solid rather than bombproof. She is the one to back if you want a bit of place security with upside. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Beau Army is the win play because he brings the strongest recent handicap form and looks the safest proposition in a race full of doubts. Aurora Mist is the each-way option at 6/1, with the draw and her previous speed figure giving her a solid chance of hitting the frame. Cause I Like You is the main danger if building on his latest fourth.

20:08 – Save 33% Buying Tickets Online Handicap

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING, Good to yielding in places | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card handicap: big field, plenty with bits of chance, and no shortage of exposed types trying to nick one. Kitty Bear arrives in winning form and is obvious enough, while Majestic King comes here on the back of a solid second and has the low draw to help matters. Famous Enough also shaped well last time and stall 1 could be a real asset if this turns tactical rather than frantic. There are a few lurkers at bigger prices too, notably Hale Bopp and Thegooseiscooked, but both need to show a bit more than they have recently. In truth, this doesn’t look a deep race, but it is a tricky little puzzle where track position and timing the run should count for plenty.

Top Selections

1. Majestic King – 5/1 with Betfair

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan | Form: 8-802 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 51

Majestic King looks the percentage call. That latest second suggested he is knocking loudly at the door, and the overall profile says he is coming to hand at the right time rather than going the other way. Drawn in stall 2, he should be able to hold a handy pitch without wasting energy, which can be a major help around here over a mile. Denis Gerard Hogan’s runners are often well placed in these ordinary handicaps, and this one doesn’t need to improve much to take a race of this nature. At 5/1, he makes plenty of appeal in a contest where some of the market rivals are easier to question.

Bet: WIN

2. Famous Enough – 7/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: Patrick T Foley | Form: 016-02 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 18

Famous Enough is the each-way angle. He returned with a much better effort when second last time, and that run gave the impression there is still a race in him from this sort of mark. The inside draw is a plus, especially with Ben Coen booked, because he should be able to save ground and creep into it when others are forced wide. He’s not the most obvious one on bare figures, but this race is full of runners with holes in their profiles and he comes here with more recent encouragement than most. The 7/1 on offer is fair, and in a 16-runner handicap with five places, he looks the value each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Majestic King is the win play after that encouraging second and a useful low draw. Famous Enough is the each-way alternative, with his recent runner-up effort and stall 1 making him very interesting in a race where place terms matter. Kitty Bear is the obvious danger after winning last time, while Hale Bopp is another to keep onside if the market speaks positively.
