16:48 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden

Race Details: 1m | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This looks a fair maiden rather than a vintage one, but there are some solid pieces of form on offer. Sanctijude, Perisher and Jojo’s Legacy bring the strongest ratings into it, while Keogie is the obvious unexposed runner after shaping well when second on debut. The ground is a major factor at Gowran and that should make this more of a test than a routine mile maiden, so proven resolution counts for plenty. Several of these have had enough chances already, whereas a few of the newcomers come from powerful yards but are being asked to do it first time on very testing terrain. It is a race where the market should be respected, but there is enough established form to be reasonably bullish rather than treating it as a complete guessing game.

Top Selections

1. Keogie – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Noel Meade | Form: 2 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 47

Keogie makes plenty of appeal as the likely improver in the field. He shaped with clear promise when runner-up on debut and that bare form can easily be upgraded for inexperience, especially in a maiden where several of the principals may already have shown most of their hand. Colin Keane is an eye-catching booking and Noel Meade does well when one of his flat youngsters knows the job second time up. The opening mark of 78 is perfectly workable in this company, and at 7/2 he looks the one with the most upside rather than the most exposed credentials. On this ground, a colt still learning but already showing ability is often the right angle. Bet: WIN

2. Perisher – 10/3 with Bet365

Jockey: Declan McDonogh | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 253-3 | Rating: 89 | Topspeed: 84

Perisher is hardly hiding his ability now and sets a solid standard on what he has achieved. His form figures are consistent, he returned with a respectable third, and his rating of 89 gives him serious claims in a race of this nature. Joseph O’Brien has two in here, but this one has the substance in the book and a low draw should do no harm if conditions turn attritional. The slight concern is a familiar one with these exposed maiden types: he may again bump into one with a bit more progress in them. Even so, he is far too reliable to leave out of the equation and 10/3 is fair for an each-way play in a 15-runner field. Bet: EACH-WAY

Danger: Sanctijude has the best rating in the line-up and is very hard to dismiss if coping fully with conditions.

Betting Strategy

Keogie is the win play because he looks the likely mover forward and may simply have more improvement than the exposed principals. Perisher is the sensible each-way option given his dependable profile and strong rating. The obvious danger is Sanctijude, while Jojo’s Legacy also has enough form to get involved if bouncing back from the latest run.

17:18 – Gowran Park Golf Club Maiden

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This looks a fairly tight little maiden on paper despite only seven runners, with the market understandably focusing on Go Just Do It and Sindagan. The former sets the standard on ratings after a solid juvenile campaign and returns with the best body of form in the race, while Sindagan arrives off a recent runner-up effort and has the look of one still moving forward. Testing ground over 7f will make this more of a stamina-and-resolution job than a simple turn-of-foot contest, and that may bring the lesser-exposed types into it if the principals underperform. Solana Beach is the interesting newcomer, but in a race where established form matters, it would still be a surprise if the winner came from outside the front pair.

Top Selections

1. Go Just Do It – 8/15 with Bet365

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 432- | Rating: 95 | Topspeed: 80

He is hard to oppose on what we’ve seen so far. A mark of 95 stands out in this field and his 432- sequence suggests a colt who kept knocking on the door in better company than this. Joseph O’Brien’s runners in these maidens are rarely lacking in readiness, and Go Just Do It looks the one with the strongest blend of proven ability and scope to improve at three. The ground is an unknown until they race on it, but his class edge may simply carry him through. At 8/15 he is no betting revelation, but he holds strong claims of finally getting off the mark. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Sindagan – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 34-2 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 57

If there is one likely to make the favourite work, it is Sindagan. He shaped encouragingly as a juvenile and returned with a solid second, which reads well enough in the context of this race. Colin Keane taking over is an obvious positive, and the Murtagh team know how to place one to nick a maiden. He still has a bit to find with Go Just Do It on the figures, but unlike some of these, he has already shown he belongs in this grade and he could be the one staying on when others have cried enough in the mud. At 2/1, he makes more appeal as the each-way play than the win alternative. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Go Just Do It is the win bet because his juvenile form and 95 rating put him clear at the head of this field. For an each-way punt, Sindagan is the obvious alternative in a race lacking depth beyond the front two. Solana Beach is the unknown with some intrigue, but the proven pair look the safest route.

17:48 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This looks a proper Gowran handicap rather than a straightforward punting heat, with a few arriving in form and several others trying to prove they can cope with a searching 7f on testing ground. Greydreambeliever sets a fair standard after her comeback second and is drawn to get involved early, while Glory To Be comes here on the back of a win and still looks on the upgrade. Varshini is another with solid recent form, but stall 9 on this ground is not ideal, and Alibah has to show she’s trained on from two-year-old efforts on her return. Greek Flower is the interesting lurker at the weights, carrying only 125 and coming here after a respectable reappearance. It’s competitive without being especially deep, and conditions could easily be the thing that sorts it out.

Top Selections

1. Greydreambeliever – 7/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Ronan Whelan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 4533-2 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 86

She makes plenty of appeal in a race where recent sharpness may count for a lot. That comeback second suggested she was ready to do herself justice straight away, and her profile is that of a filly who keeps knocking on the door in this grade. A mark of 93 looks workable, she has a low draw in stall 2, and Joseph O’Brien has the sort of filly who often thrives once the mud is flying. She’s not thrown in, but she is solid, uncomplicated and arrives with the most persuasive blend of current form and conditions in her favour. At 7/2, she looks the percentage call in a tricky race.

Bet: WIN

2. Greek Flower – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Ryan | Trainer: John James Feane | Form: 4065-3 | Rating: 94 | Topspeed: 89

Greek Flower is the each-way play because she has enough class to get involved and, crucially, she’s weighted to be dangerous. Her recent third was a fair effort, her Topspeed figure of 89 is right up there with the better numbers in the field, and she gets in here with just 125 to carry. For a seven-year-old mare she remains pretty reliable in these handicaps when things fall right, and this sort of attritional 7f can suit a hardened operator more than a less streetwise younger rival. She does need everything to drop right, but 7/1 makes plenty of sense if you want one to run her race and hit the frame.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Greydreambeliever is the win bet after a promising return and looks the most likely to cope with conditions while still having a bit in hand. Greek Flower is the sensible each-way punt at the prices, especially with three places on offer and her low weight a major plus in the mud. The obvious dangers are Glory To Be, who arrives in form, and Varshini, who has claims if overcoming a wider draw.

18:18 – Racing Again May 5th Race

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This may only have drawn seven, but it is a rather interesting little conditions race with a short-priced favourite to aim at. City Of Memphis has obvious star billing after winning on debut and following up with a fair effort in defeat, and the Twomey-Lee combination demands respect, but this testing 7f asks a different question. Tina’s Indian arrives on the back of a win and has race fitness on his side, while Lord Massusus is the established yardstick on ratings and is already proven in stronger company than this. Saracen and Cowardofthecounty both have questions to answer after quiet recent efforts. In a small field on deep ground, tactical pace and a willingness to see out the conditions could matter just as much as raw ability. It’s not a bad race, but it is no penalty kick.

Top Selections

1. Lord Massusus – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gary Carroll | Trainer: Joseph G Murphy | Form: 529-86 | Rating: 113 | Topspeed: 57

He is the one that makes most appeal at the prices. Lord Massusus is the top-rated horse in the field and, while his last two runs do not scream obvious winner, they came after a break and there was enough in his overall profile to suggest he can be very competitive in this sort of race. He has mixed it in better company than several of these and a mark of 113 gives him a solid platform if this turns into a proper slog. Gary Carroll is a positive booking and, at 4/1, he looks a fair alternative to the favourite rather than a speculative swing. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Tina’s Indian

Jockey: Ronan Whelan | Trainer: Mark Fahey | Form: 78331- | Rating: 104 | Topspeed: 85

Tina’s Indian is not the class act on the figures, but he comes here with the most solid recent winning form and could easily outrun bigger reputations if this becomes attritional. That 78331- sequence shows he finished last season in good order, and there is a lot to like about a horse arriving here off the back of a victory rather than trying to rediscover it. Stall 2 is no bad place to be in a race lacking numbers, and Ronan Whelan should be able to keep him in a handy rhythm throughout. With only two places on offer, this is the type of each-way play that makes sense in a small-but-competitive heat. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lord Massusus is the win play at 4/1, chiefly because he brings the best rating into the race and has a stronger body of form than most of these. Tina’s Indian is the each-way option thanks to his recent win and the suspicion he will handle a proper test. City Of Memphis is the danger if simply better than these, but at around even money he is short enough in demanding ground.

18:48 – Dining Packages At Gowran Park Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This looks a proper three-year-old handicap puzzle rather than a race packed with solid, dependable form. Plenty arrive off the back of improved efforts, notably Monocle Rocket, Dream Legend, Bullet Bourbon and Imnotleavinyou, while Chirac has been shaping as though a race like this is within reach from a handy low draw. The testing ground is the big factor at 7f here and it may well turn this into a war of attrition rather than a straightforward speed test. In that context, I’m inclined to side with horses who have already shown they can knuckle down in handicaps rather than those still living on promise. It’s not the deepest contest, but it is competitive and getting the right one at the prices matters.

Top Selections

1. Chirac – 4/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Ronan Whelan | Trainer: John James Feane | Form: 0-604 | Rating: 60 | Topspeed: 45

Chirac makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many are bombproof. He wasn’t beaten far when fourth last time and that run suggested he is starting to come to hand at the right moment. Stall 1 could be a real asset if conditions get even more attritional, allowing Ronan Whelan to hold a position and save ground throughout. An opening mark of 60 still looks workable enough and this doesn’t strike me as a race full of lurking well-handicapped types. At 4/1 he is not exactly missed, but he does have the profile of one who holds strong claims if coping with the surface. Bet type: this is the WIN play.

Bet: WIN

2. Bullet Bourbon – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sadhbh Tormey | Trainer: T G McCourt | Form: 9390-2 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 63

Bullet Bourbon looks the each-way value. He returned with a much better effort when runner-up and, crucially, owns the best topspeed figure in the field with 63, which tells you there is a bit more substance to his profile than many of these. The 7f trip on very testing ground should suit if he can build on that latest run, and T G McCourt’s runner is one of the few here who already looks capable of running to a level that would win an ordinary race of this nature. The mark of 65 asks a question, but 8/1 feels fair in a 13-runner handicap paying four places. Bet type: solid EACH-WAY punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Chirac is the one I’d want on side for the win, with his recent fourth and inside draw making plenty of sense in the mud. Bullet Bourbon is the each-way angle at the bigger price, especially with four places on offer. Monocle Rocket is an obvious danger after his recent second, while Dream Legend and Imnotleavinyou also come into the reckoning if backing up their latest improvement.

19:18 – Thomastown Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This looks the sort of low-grade 7f handicap where conditions will do plenty of the sorting, and a few with ordinary recent figures suddenly become more interesting if they can handle the mud. Zabriskie Point is the obvious starting point after shaping better than the bare result on his latest run and he has the profile of one who should be well suited by a proper test. Kitty Bear has been more reliable than most at this level and the inside draw is a plus around here, while Miss Americana is another with enough recent encouragement to be firmly in the mix despite a wider berth. Hell Left Loose keeps knocking on the door in this grade, but overall it is not a deep race and that makes it a tricky enough puzzle rather than a strong contest.

Top Selections

1. Zabriskie Point – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Reese Holohan | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 98P983 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 52

Zabriskie Point makes most appeal in a race where solid recent form is thin on the ground. That latest third was a definite step back in the right direction and, in this company, a mark of 67 gives him serious claims if he can build on it. The draw in stall 2 is another positive because getting a handy early position on this sort of surface can be half the battle. McGuinness runners in these ordinary handicaps are always worth a second look when the market speaks, and 9/4 feels fair rather than cramped given the lack of depth behind him. He is the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Kitty Bear – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Orla Tynan | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: 415426 | Rating: 60 | Topspeed: 42

Kitty Bear looks the each-way play because she arrives in much better nick than plenty of these and tends to give her running in this grade. Her recent form figures are honest, she is nicely berthed in stall 1, and off a mark of 60 she does not need to find a huge amount to hit the frame again. In a race full of exposed, inconsistent types, that reliability counts for plenty. She may lack the upside of a few, but she should cope with a battle and 9/2 is perfectly acceptable for a mare who has been holding her form together. This looks a straightforward each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Zabriskie Point is the win bet after a more encouraging latest effort and he has the draw to get involved early. Kitty Bear is the each-way alternative, chiefly because she is dependable and should be competitive again from the inside stall. Miss Americana is the obvious danger if overcoming a wide draw, while Hell Left Loose is another to consider for place players.

19:48 – @GowranPark1 Handicap

Race Details: 1m 5f | | Going: SOFT TO HEAVY, Heavy in places | | flat

This is the sort of low-grade staying handicap that can make fools of plenty, especially on testing ground, but there are still a few solid angles into it. Royal Belief heads the market and is easy enough to see why dropped into this grade with Colin Keane booked, while Bhean Saibhre arrives on the back of a very decent reappearance and looks the obvious threat if building on that. Deluca Chop has been knocking on the door and should keep finding under these conditions, while Bynx and Prom Queen are the types who could easily outrun their prices in a race lacking depth. It is not a strong contest by any means, but the ground and trip will place a premium on honesty and stamina, and that should help the more reliable stayers come to the fore.

Top Selections

1. Royal Belief – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Cian Collins | Form: 00050- | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 42

The bare form figures do not exactly scream certainty, but this is a very ordinary race and Royal Belief is the one with the clearest class edge on official figures. He is rated 67 yet sneaks in here off just 134lb, and the booking of Colin Keane catches the eye immediately in a contest of this nature. From stall 1 he should get a sensible trip, and if he handles these very testing conditions well enough, he has more upside than most of these exposed rivals. At 2/1 he is hardly a giveaway, but he is still the most likely winner in a field where plenty have obvious holes. Bet: WIN

2. Deluca Chop – 10/1 with Betfair

Jockey: | Trainer: S M Duffy | Form: 83-233 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 44

Deluca Chop is not difficult to warm to as an each-way play because he is at least arriving here in form, which is more than can be said for a good few of these. Those recent placed efforts suggest he is holding his level well, and in a slog over 1m5f that sort of race-fitness and consistency can count for plenty. He is drawn a little wider than ideal in 15, but if he can slot in and travel, this looks the right kind of race for him to keep grinding away when others have cried enough. Around 10/1 appeals as a fair each-way price in a 16-runner handicap with four places on offer. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Royal Belief is the win play on the basis that he has the best chance on ratings and the strongest jockey booking in the race. For an each-way punt, Deluca Chop makes more appeal than some of the shorter-priced alternatives because his recent form is solid and he should stay strongly. Bhean Saibhre is the obvious danger if progressing from her latest run.
