17:30 – Huws Gray Apprentice Handicap
Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This is a proper sharp five-furlong handicap where track position and early pace will matter plenty, but it is not the deepest Class 6 you will ever see. Beerwah arrives on the back of a win and looks one of the few with a bit of momentum, while Thornaby Pearl is well berthed in stall 1 and has the raw speed figures to make a race of it if bouncing back. Classy Clarets has been knocking on the door in similar company and is another who should be involved from a handy draw. Wee Mary keeps running her race without quite getting her head in front, while Until Dawn hinted last time that he is coming to the boil. Tricky enough, but not impossible to solve.
Top Selections
1. Beerwah – 9/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Warren Fentiman | Trainer: John & Sean Quinn | Form: 146-21 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 59
Beerwah makes most appeal because he comes here in the best recent form in the field and looked to be building towards that latest success rather than fluking it. The 146-21 line reads well for this grade, and a mark of 69 still looks manageable for a 4yo who may not have reached his ceiling in sprint handicaps just yet. Stall 9 is not ideal if they come middle to low, but in a race lacking many convincing finishers I would rather side with the one arriving in form and with a yard that knows how to place one. Available at 9/2, he looks the percentage call.
Bet: WIN
2. Classy Clarets – 6/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Mohammed Tabti | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 662133 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 57
Classy Clarets is not especially well treated on bare ratings, but she is admirably reliable at this level and that counts for plenty in low-grade five-furlong handicaps. Her recent figures of 662133 tell you she is turning up and running to a solid level every time, and stall 2 should allow her to hold a useful position from the gates. She does not have the sexy profile of an improver, but she is exactly the type who can nick a place, and possibly more, when others fluff the start or fail to back up previous efforts. At 6/1 she makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where consistency is a major asset.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Beerwah is the win play on the strength of his recent profile and the sense that he still has a bit more to offer in this company. Classy Clarets is the safer each-way punt given her consistency and favourable draw. Thornaby Pearl is the obvious danger from stall 1, while Until Dawn is another to keep onside after a better latest run.

18:05 – British EBF Supporting Racing Welfare #mentalhealthawarenessweek Restricted Maiden (GBB/IRE Inc’)
Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This looks a fairly informative little restricted maiden rather than a throwaway early-season juvenile event. Ricky Punting and Boutblummintime are the only pair with racecourse experience, and that usually counts for plenty at Hamilton, especially over 6f where knowing the job can be half the battle. Ricky Punting shaped with promise when fourth on debut and sets the standard on the published figures, while Boutblummintime was a bit more exposed without quite matching that level. The interesting angle, though, is the newcomers, with Waasil from the Karl Burke yard the obvious one to note in the market and on connections. Wild Terrain is another who wouldn’t need to be anything special to get involved. Small field, but not an easy one: the proven form versus potential argument should decide it.
Top Selections
1. Ricky Punting – 5/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Pierre-Louis Jamin | Trainer: Tom Dascombe | Form: 4 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 45
He brings the most solid piece of form into the race and, in a restricted maiden of this nature, that matters. A debut fourth has already earned him a mark of 73, which is comfortably the best rating on offer here, and that gives him a proper edge over rivals who either have to improve sharply or show something first time up. Drawn in stall 1 and receiving weight from the colts at the top of the market, Ricky Punting makes plenty of appeal if taking the normal step forward from run one to run two. At 5/2 he looks the percentage call rather than a flashy one. Bet type: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Waasil – 3/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Sam James | Trainer: K R Burke | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
Karl Burke’s juveniles at this time of year always command respect, and Waasil looks the one most likely to spoil the experienced horses’ party. The market has had plenty to say already, and while he is not exactly a big price, 3/1 is fair enough in a six-runner maiden where raw ability can take you a long way. Sam James knows the Hamilton track well and this colt is drawn handily enough in 4 to get a good education if professional from the gates. In a race lacking depth beyond the obvious pair, Waasil looks the right each-way alternative because he has the yard, profile and price to make plenty of sense. Bet type: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Ricky Punting is the sensible win play because he has the best established form and the best rating in the field. Waasil is the each-way punt, chiefly because Burke’s newcomers rarely lack for know-how and this doesn’t look an especially deep maiden. Wild Terrain is the other one to keep an eye on if the market speaks, but the safest approach is proven form first, potential second.

18:40 – Prime Secure William Wallace Handicap (GBBPlus Race)
Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 4 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This may only be a three-runner handicap, but it is a proper little contest between three unexposed 3yos who all arrive with something to recommend them. Gaelic Approach sets the standard on official figures and got off the mark last time, while Harriet Quimby looked a filly on the up when scoring on her reappearance for Simon & Ed Crisford. My Ballyquinn is not dismissed either, especially with David O’Meara’s team often improving these types for racing, but he does need to find a bit more. In such a tactical race, track position and pace will matter plenty, and there is every chance this becomes a short straight fight rather than a stamina test. It is a small field, but not an easy one to get right.
Top Selections
1. Harriet Quimby – 6/4 with Bet365
Jockey: Oisin Orr | Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford | Form: 32-1 | Rating: 87 | Topspeed: 50
Harriet Quimby gets the vote because she still looks open to a fair bit of improvement after just four starts. Her reappearance win suggested she had trained on well from two solid juvenile efforts, and the Crisford yard is more than capable of placing one to keep progressing through the ranks. She does have 7lb to find with Gaelic Approach on official ratings, but that only tells part of the story in a race between lightly raced 3yos stepping forward at different rates. Oisin Orr is a positive booking and, at 6/4, she appeals as the one most likely to have another chunk of progress in hand. Bet: WIN
Betting Strategy
In a three-runner race, keep it simple: Harriet Quimby is the win bet. She looks the most progressive of the trio and may not have shown the ceiling of her ability yet. There is no each-way angle in a field this small. Gaelic Approach is the obvious danger on ratings after his latest win, while My Ballyquinn needs a career best.

19:15 – Precon Braveheart Handicap (GBBPlus Race)
Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 3 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This is a tight little seven-runner handicap but it looks a proper Class 3 rather than a weak numbers job. Elsass arrives on the up after a winning reappearance and is the obvious starting point, while Humble Spark has been knocking hard on the door and gets in here with a feather weight despite the highest rating in the field. Tiernan has the raw ability to be involved if fully tuned first time out, and Urban Road is not without an each-way squeak on his recent consistency. Antrim and Majestic need to bounce back, while Ouro Preto is interesting on old figures but has a bit to prove after a break. Tactically it could be steadily run, so position and turn of foot may matter as much as stamina.
Top Selections
1. Elsass – 10/3 with Bet365
Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 9120-1 | Rating: 105 | Topspeed: 93
Elsass looks the most solid option in the race. He returned with a win and did it in the style of a horse who still has a bit more to offer at this sort of trip, and that recent outing is a definite edge over a few of these who are either coming back from breaks or trying to rediscover their best. Charlie Johnston’s runners are often straightforward, fit and willing, and Connor Beasley is an excellent booking around Hamilton. Off 105 he is no gift, but he is progressive whereas some of these are more exposed. At 10/3, he is not spectacularly priced, but he is the one with the fewest questions to answer.
Bet: WIN
2. Humble Spark – 7/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Amie Waugh | Trainer: Jim Goldie | Form: 455442 | Rating: 111 | Topspeed: 93
Humble Spark is the each-way angle because he keeps running his race and does not look likely to be far away again. The recent string of placed efforts tells its own story: he is holding his form well, he stays, and he usually puts himself in the argument. Top-rated in the field yet carrying just 117, he is clearly well treated on these terms and his topspeed figure stacks up strongly too. The slight concern is whether he finds one too good again, because that has become a bit of a habit, but in a seven-runner race with three places on offer he makes plenty of appeal as a reliable each-way punt at 7/2.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Elsass is the win play because he comes here as the progressive one with match fitness on his side and a recent success already in the book. Humble Spark is the sensible each-way alternative given his consistency and handy racing weight. Tiernan is the obvious danger if ready to roll after his break, while Urban Road could outrun bigger odds if this turns into a tactical affair.

19:50 – Luddon Construction Handicap
Race Details: 1m 1f | Class 4 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This looks a properly competitive 10-runner handicap rather than a race full of hiding places. Austrian Theory brings the best mix of proven class and raw figures, while Obito, Qitaal and Draupnir all sit prominently in the market with cases that are easy enough to make. Quiet Resolve arrives here off a win and is another with obvious claims if building on that return, but he is now in deeper water. The shape of the race suggests a tactical affair over this intermediate trip, and around Hamilton that often turns on track position as much as finishing speed. There are several solid handicappers in here, though not many screamingly well treated ones, so this feels more like a race to side with the strongest recent evidence than to get too clever.
Top Selections
1. Austrian Theory – 5/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Oisin Orr | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 0023-5 | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 86
He makes plenty of appeal in a race where a few of the likelier types still have something to prove at the trip or off their marks. Austrian Theory ran well plenty of times last season in better company than this and his topspeed figure of 86 is the standout in the field. His latest fifth was not a bad reappearance at all, and it should have teed him up nicely for this. Oisin Orr is a strong booking for a horse who usually travels well and can be delivered late. At 5/1, he looks the percentage call in a race short on obvious improvers and holds strong claims of outclassing these late on.
Bet: WIN
2. Tee Aitch Aye – 9/1 with Betfair
Jockey: Greg Fairley | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 5135-8 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 87
He is the each-way angle at a price because the handicapper may just be giving him a chance and his raw speed figures say he is not out of place in this company. That topspeed mark of 87 is actually the best in the line-up, and while he was only eighth on his return, he should be sharper now. The wide draw is not ideal, but he is well enough treated on 90 and gets in here with just 121. In a race where several of the market principals are tightly packed on form and price, 9/1 makes Tee Aitch Aye the value play for a place at the very least, and possibly more if he gets a smooth trip.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Austrian Theory is the win bet on the strength of his class edge and the best recent body of handicap form. Tee Aitch Aye is the each-way punt at 9/1, with his low weight and strong topspeed figure making him more interesting than the market suggests. Draupnir is the obvious danger after a solid return, while Obito is another who would not need much more to get involved.

Race Details: 1m | Class 5 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This looks a fairly tight three-year-old handicap rather than a deep one, and the market has latched onto the right horses. Welbury sets the standard after a solid start to the campaign and is the obvious one to beat if building again, while Picture Palace comes here less exposed and open to a bit more improvement for the Crisfords. Saxophonist is another with a workable profile after shaping nicely on his return, and Delinquent is not easily dismissed despite failing to back up a previous win last time. There are one or two lurking at prices, but this feels like a race where recent mile form and the ability to travel kindly around Hamilton will count for plenty. Tricky enough for punters, but not impossible.
Top Selections
1. Welbury – 2/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Callum Rodriguez | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 35-12 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 70
Welbury makes plenty of appeal. He returned with a win and then found only one too good next time, so the 35-12 line reads exactly as you’d want for a progressive three-year-old entering handicaps properly. An opening mark of 83 is no giveaway, but it doesn’t look beyond him judged on that recent runner-up effort, and his topspeed figure of 70 is right up there in this field. Bethell’s youngsters are usually well placed, Rodriguez is a neat booking around here, and at 2/1 he’s short enough without being cramped. He looks the most likely winner if taking another small step forward.
Bet: WIN
2. Picture Palace – 9/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Jack Nicholls | Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford | Form: 233 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 34
Picture Palace is the one who interests me most against the favourite because there should be more to come from this lightly raced filly. She’s yet to get her head in front, but that 233 profile suggests consistency rather than limitation, and the Crisford team are very good at finding races of this nature for improving types. Off 81 she gets in just 2lb below Welbury, yet has a bit more scope than some of these battle-hardened handicapper types. The topspeed number is modest, so this isn’t a completely bombproof case, but 9/2 feels fair in a race where natural progress could easily swing things her way. She’s the each-way angle.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Keep it simple: Welbury is the win play because he brings the strongest recent form and already looks up to this mark. Picture Palace is the each-way punt at a more workable price, especially with three places on offer. Saxophonist is the obvious danger from stall 1 if building on his comeback third, while Delinquent is capable of bouncing back.

Race Details: 1m | Class 6 | Going: 6.40, 7.15, 7.50, 8.25 & 9.00 +8yds) (Good (rail movements) | | flat
This looks a pretty ordinary Class 6 on paper, but that does not make it easy. Perfidia arrives in the best recent form after shaping well in two starts this term and sets a fair standard for the grade, while Hashtagnotions has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. Nakatomi is another with solid enough recent figures and a handy racing weight, and Uncle Liam could easily leave his seasonal reappearance behind. By contrast, several of the older hands such as Pisanello and Pallas Lord are becoming difficult to trust despite slipping to workable marks. With Penny Mountain a non-runner, this should be run at a sensible tempo, and it may come down to who gets the cleanest trip rather than anything resembling raw class.
Top Selections
1. Perfidia – 3/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Jake Dickson | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 697-32 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 57
Perfidia makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking depth. She has clearly come forward this spring, finishing third and then second, and that latest effort suggested a first success for a while is well within reach if she gets a decent pace to aim at. An official mark of 74 does not look harsh in this company, and her figures stack up well enough against these exposed rivals. Jake Dickson knows the yard’s handicappers inside out, and this looks the sort of late-evening Hamilton race Tim Easterby often targets. At 3/1 she is not exactly missed, but she is still the one with the strongest claims.
Bet: WIN
2. Nakatomi – 5/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Rhys Elliott | Trainer: Alan Brown | Form: 569563 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 59
Nakatomi looks the each-way value because, unlike plenty of these, he has been running his race often enough to think another honest effort is coming. His recent third was perfectly respectable, his Topspeed figure of 59 is competitive in this field, and he gets in here carrying just 121. That weight could matter around Hamilton if the race turns tactical and they start quickening from some way out. He is not bombproof as a win proposition, but at 5/1 he makes more appeal as a solid place play than some of the shorter market principals. In a race full of unreliable types, consistency counts for plenty.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Perfidia is the percentage call and the straight win bet, with her recent form giving her the edge in a weak handicap. Nakatomi appeals most as the each-way punt, especially with three places on offer and a light weight to help him travel into it. Hashtagnotions is the obvious danger if finally delivering on a string of respectable efforts, while Uncle Liam could also step forward from his reappearance.
