Haydock Racing Tips (Saturday 5 September 2026)
There’s a bumper eight races taking place at Haydock, with the action getting under way at 1.25pm. Andrew has a brace of picks in the opening contest, whilst he has a 2pt selection in the 1.55pm.
1.25 Haydock – The Lost King (1pt win – 15/2 bet365, Paddy Power) & Fondo Blanco (1pt win – Fondo Blanco – 18/1 general)
The Group 3 Superior Mile often goes to a runner who prepped in handicap or Listed company rather than a novice stepping up or a runner who ran in another Group contest last time. The Lost King, always up with the pace when successful in a heritage handicap on easy ground at York last time, has rarely run a bad race since gelded, recording form figures of 12134011 (4-8), with the ‘duck egg’ excusable as he was drawn on the wrong side in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
I also want to side with the other King Power-owned runner in this mile contest – Roger Varian’s Fondo Blanco. He comes out clear best when filtering Proform’s speed figures for genuinely soft or heavy ground only and he 3as unlucky to bump into the progressive Forty Years On when a 14-1 second of 11 in a 7f Goodwood handicap last time. His record on officially good to soft or softer going stands at 312142 (2-6) and he holds each-way claims at a big price.
1.55 Haydock – Rocket Boy (2pt win – 2/1 generally)
The Marco Botti-trained Rocket Boy overcame obvious signs of inexperience to record a 22-1 debut success at Yarmouth in late July and improved his RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 24lb when going down by three-quarters of a lengths in a 14-1 third in Listed company at Salisbury second time out. The son of Soldier’s Call was still green that day and there should be plenty of improvement to come when he tackles the Listed Ascendant Stakes this afternoon. The deep ground shouldn’t be a problem on breeding and horses having their third career start, who prepped in another Listed contest, are four from five in this race in recent years.
Ascot Racing Tips (Saturday 5 September 2026)
It’s a 1.40pm start at Ascot, with seven races taking place. Andrew has a brace of picks in the 1.40pm and 4.35pm races, respectively.
1.40 Ascot – Addison Grey (1pt win – 11/2 Paddy Power, 5/1 generally)
In the past ten runnings of this 7f Class 2 handicap, betting four-year-old gelding who were in the top six in the betting would have found seven winners from 20 bets for a profit of £44.33 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected wins = 2.16, A/E = 3.25). Addison Grey, who looks like being today’s only qualifier, won at Newbury last time on his first start over a straight 7f and can follow up.
4.35 Ascot – Golden Long (5/1 bet365)
Golden Long (watch your bets as Golden Mind also runs) clocked a fast time according to Proform when landing a 6f handicap at Newmarket on July 4th and he followed up with a short-head verdict over Ancient State ober the Portland trip of 5f 143 yards at Doncaster next time. The narrow runner-up looked to have nicked it when going clear under a solo ride on the far side of the track and the Lemos De Souza-trained six-year-old did well to chase that one down, taking his record beyond the minimum trip for his current yard to 111 (3-3). If he can continue his progression by taking this 6f contest before a crack at the Portland itself.
