Haydock, Ascot & Wolverhampton Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Saturday 20 December

Haydock, Ascot & Wolverhampton Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Saturday 20 December

Andrew Mount heads into the final pre-Christmas weekend of racing looking to earn you some extra festive winnings with four best bets across the cards.

The standout action comes from Ascot on Saturday, as the royal track hosts the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle, featuring many names who could have parts to play in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

One of Andrew’s best bets comes in the race, while he also has selections at Haydock and Wolverhampton for you to follow.

Haydock Racing Tips (Saturday 20 December 2025)

Haydock’s action on Saturday features an historic handicap, the Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase, which is a contest in which one of Andrew’s two tips on the card is running.

2.05 Haydock – Grand Albert (1pt win – 12/1 generally)

Grand Albert has been unlucky to bump into three subsequent Cheltenham festival winners in three of his last five starts. Donald McCain’s seven-year-old had no answer to Myretown (winner of the Ultima on his next outing) when third at Kelso in February, was only eight lengths behind Golden Miller victor Caldwell Potter when third at Carlisle on his comeback last term and, on his final outing in the 2023/24 campaign, was just one length behind Haiti Couleurs at Bangor. He was a 25-length winner at Wetherby on his second start last term and his reappearance 11-1 fourth at Bangor would have been needed. The first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement, as chase progeny of his sire Jet Away have a nine from 24 record when fitted with this headgear for a profit of £24.45 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.99, A/E = 3.01). Top Of The Bill and Saladins Son, one-two over course and distance last month, look the main dangers and I’ll have a stake saver on the pair and combine the trio in a combination forecast.

2.40 Haydock – Bittalemon (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 Ladbrokes, Coral)

Sound jumper Bittalemon needs to improve on the clock but looks worth a small interest 2m3f Listed mares’ novices’ hurdle given the fine record of four-year-olds (she’s the only one in today’s line-up). Backing her age group in the past ten renewals would have found five winners from 13 bets for a profit of £35.90 to a £1 level stake at SP. Three of the beaten horses finished second (7-1, 13-2 and 4-1) and another was third at 40-1. Jimmy Moffatt’s filly won well at Cartmel last time, after which her trainer suggested that softer going would suit. I’ve saved on Jackie Hobbs.

Ascot Racing Tips (Saturday 20 December 2025)

Ascot’s Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle is the final top level contest before Christmas in the UK and Ireland and Andrew has an each-way fancy for the race.

2.25 Ascot – Beauport (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365, four places)

This doesn’t look a vintage renewal of the Long Walk Hurdle and last year’s close-up 16-1 third Beauport may be able to match or even improve on that effort. The Twiston-Davies’ nine-year-old has a good record on right-handed tracks, recording form figures of 12215213 (3-8) for a profit of £32.00.

14:25 Howden Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

Wolverhampton Racing Tips (Saturday 20 December 2025)

Andrew also has one recommended bet on Wolverhampton’s nine-race evening card, which comes in a competitive handicap at 7.15pm.

7.15 Wolverhampton – He’s A Gentleman (1pt e/w)

This doesn’t look a vintage renewal of the Long Walk Hurdle and lasWith front-runners High On Hope and Stellenbosch in opposition this 7f Class 4 handicap should be run at a sound pace and that will suit in-form Hugo Palmer’s He’s A Gentleman, well drawn in stall 5 of 12. The six-year-old scored over course and distance on his penultimate start, taking his course record over 7f-8.6f for his current handler, when returned to the track within eight weeks of his previous start, to 012122121 (4-9) for a profit of £18.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. He finished a solid 20-1 second of 13 at Southwell last time and is worth an each-way bet.
