Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting concludes on Saturday with a barnstorming card. The big handicap has attracted its traditionally massive field, but there are also three Group races to enjoy, including two Group 1s.
GG tipster Joe Napier has tips in both of those top level contests, as well as two others from Newmarket and Haydock to follow for our lucky 15 on Saturday.
Haydock Racing Tips (Saturday 26 September)
Two races are live on ITV from Haydock on Saturday. We have a selection in the opener as part of our Saturday lucky 15.
1.35 Haydock – Arctic Thunder (1pt win – 8/1)
Both Centigrade and Eternal Force have hinted at more for their powerful yards. However, neither arrives here on a convincing piece of form. The same is true of Arctic Thunder, but given he was on a hat-trick when sixth last time out, there could easily be a resumption of that progression. The five-year-old won two on the bounce convincingly this summer, the second of which was over course and distance. That two-and-a-half length success was firmly franked when the runner-up then won his next two. The selection was only sixth of 13 at Ascot earlier this month, but might not have been on the ideal part of the track. Back at the track and trip over which he was so effective in early August, he can regain the winning thread.
Newmarket Racing Tips (Saturday 26 September)
Few flat cards hold a candle to Newmarket’s on Saturday. Featuring the Cambridgeshire as its highlight, there are also a trio of two-year-old Group races, including a pair at the top level. We have selections in all three of those contests for you to follow.
1.55 Newmarket – Haffner (1pt win – 9/2)
Unbeaten pair Burning Up and First Law have undoubted potential, but Haffner has a stronger piece of form in the book than any in this field. Aidan O’Brien has not won this race since 2019, but he clearly thinks a lot of the son of Justify. He was the Ballydoyle representative in York’s Acomb Stakes. That race has worked out very well in recent seasons and he won it gamely under an aggressive Ryan Moore ride. He flopped upped to Group 1 level at the Curragh earlier this month. However, his previous form was extremely solid and the step up further to 1m looks a good move for this strapping juvenile. There will be few in this field seeing out this distance as strongly.
2.27 Newmarket – Senorita Bonita (1pt win – 2/1)
Although Sun Goddess has put in freakish performances the last twice, she could meet her match here in Senorita Bonita. A chance is taken that over 6f on good ground, the selection’s speed, as well as no shortage of class, can provide her with a second Group 1 success. The Crisfords’ filly has won three of her four starts, losing only in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She has since developed further to win Newmarket’s Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes when upped to 6f, then produced a stunning performance to win the top level Prix Morny when sent over to France. That was an imperious display, but she is equally as adept on quick ground as soft. She should hold Libertango again on Newmarket form and might get Sun Goddess under pressure early.
3.00 Newmarket – Orthodox (1pt win – 11/4)
It is worth forgiving Royal Ascot winner Orthodox his blip at Deauville in August. The Havana Grey colt was so impressive on his first two starts over 5f. His win at Salisbury teed up his fine win in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at the royal meeting, where he pulled three-and-a-half lengths clear. Looking only through the runner-up, that form could be questioned, but there was decent depth to that 21-runner field. On soft ground, he did not enjoy his first 6f experience in France, but the ground is easier to blame than the distance. He had previously seen out 5f strongly at Ascot, boding well for another go at this trip. In a weaker line-up than normal for this Group 1, he is the one with existing class.
