14:00 – ICL Handicap

Race Details: 2m | Class 5 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This has become a tighter little staying handicap after the non-runners, and the testing ground should make it a proper slog rather than a turn-of-foot affair. Dreams Adozen and Treasure Islands arrive here off the back of wins and it would be no surprise if the pair dominated the market and the finish, but they get no freebies in conditions like these. Fleurman is an old hand at staying trips and has the profile of one who could make this awkward for the younger legs, while Ebony Maw is dangerously well treated on old figures if the mud brings him back to life. It is not a deep Class 5 by any means, but it is a race where proven stamina and attitude matter more than pure speed.

Top Selections

1. Dreams Adozen – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: James Owen | Form: 91731- | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 66

James Owen’s runner looks the percentage call. He signed off last season with a win and that piece of form reads well enough in the context of this race, especially as he shapes like a thorough stayer rather than one merely getting by at the trip. An opening mark of 81 is fair rather than lenient, but there is still a sense he has not finished progressing yet. Jason Hart is a solid booking for a race that may turn into a war of attrition, and at 2/1 he is hardly missed by the market, though he remains the one with the strongest all-round claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Fleurman – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Harry Burns | Trainer: Patrick Morris | Form: 308513 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed:

Fleurman is not the sexy option, but he is exactly the sort of battle-hardened stayer who can outrun his price in these conditions. He got his head back in front two starts ago and backed that up with a respectable third last time, so there is no arguing with his current level of wellbeing. The 8yo has seen plenty, and in a race where a few still have to prove they really want it in deep ground over 2m, that experience counts for plenty. Harry Burns knows how to ride these grinders, and 4/1 makes definite appeal as an each-way punt in a small but select field. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dreams Adozen is the win play because he looks the most likely improver and arrives with the right profile for a testing 2m handicap. Fleurman is the each-way alternative at a backable price, with his proven stamina and current form making him easy to like for a place. Treasure Islands is the obvious danger after scoring last time, while Ebony Maw is not one to dismiss lightly if the ground turns this into a proper slog.

14:30 – Pitch Perfect EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB/GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 3 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This looks a maiden that revolves around the better-fancied 3yos, with Scarlet Legend setting a clear standard after finishing second on debut and earning an 82 mark straight away. She is the obvious one, but this is not quite a walkover in deep ground over 1m3f. Outback Legend has already shown enough in two starts to suggest this sort of trip and test can suit, while Yafreh also shaped with promise first time and should know much more now. The older maidens like Moonrunner and Florida Dreams bring experience, but they also bring questions, and in a race like this I would much rather side with the more progressive types than exposed losers.

Top Selections

1. Scarlet Legend – 8/11 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 2 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 65

She sets the bar and, frankly, the rest need to improve a fair bit to beat her. That debut second reads very well in the context of this race, and an opening mark of 82 is the standout figure on offer. Balding’s newcomers often come forward plenty for a run, so it is easy to see her stepping up again now stretched to 1m3f. The soft-ground question is there only because she has not faced it yet, but her profile screams middle-distance filly with more to come. Odds-on is never glamorous, though 8/11 still makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking depth. Bet type tag: solid win play.

Bet: WIN

2. Outback Legend – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rossa Ryan | Trainer: Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | Form: 63 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 54

He looks the sensible each-way alternative to the favourite. Third last time, after a sixth on debut, was a step in the right direction and his 76 rating gives him a more solid platform than most of these. The fact he has already shown a bit under race conditions matters in a maiden where several are still learning on the job, and this extra distance could easily unlock a bit more. Rossa Ryan is an eye-catching booking and stall 1 should help him hold a decent position if things get attritional. At 4/1, he is not wildly priced, but he is one of the few who makes genuine each-way appeal. Bet type tag: straightforward each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Scarlet Legend is the one to beat and makes the most solid win bet on the card in this race. For an each-way angle, Outback Legend appeals as the runner most likely to chase her home if the favourite proves as good as expected. Yafreh is the obvious danger if improving from debut, while Moonrunner has enough experience to nick a place if the younger horses fail to handle the ground.

15:00 – Unsung Heroes Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This has depth for a fillies’ novice and the market has latched onto the right trio. Secret Of Life sets the standard on her winning debut and Ralph Beckett’s filly is very much the one they all have to beat, but this testing 6f asks a different question now. Pointe Bleu shaped better than the bare result when fourth first time up for William Haggas and looks sure to improve, while Borjina arrives on the back of a win and already has the benefit of a recent run under her belt. Shushu is another interesting newcomer from a yard that does well with this type. It is not a penalty kick for the favourite, though, because heavy-ground speed tests can turn into proper stamina examinations for inexperienced fillies.

Top Selections

1. Secret Of Life – 7/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Rossa Ryan | Trainer: Ralph Beckett | Form: 1- | Rating: 86 | Topspeed:

Secret Of Life brings the best piece of form into the race and an opening mark of 86 tells its own story. A Beckett filly winning first time at two is usually worth noting, and she now returns with Rossa Ryan booked for a yard that places these types sensibly. The obvious caveat is the ground, because what looked a straightforward novice on paper becomes more attritional when it is soft with heavy patches, but she has already shown enough class to make that concern manageable. At 7/4 she is not a giveaway, yet she still looks the most likely winner if taking the expected step forward from two to three. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Borjina – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 4-1 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 34

Borjina appeals as the each-way play because she has already put a win on the board this season and that recent experience can count for plenty in a novice like this. Edward Bethell’s filly improved from her juvenile debut to score on reappearance, and there is a fair chance there is more to come now that she has learned her job. She does not have Secret Of Life’s ceiling on paper, but she is match-fit, has a workable draw, and Kevin Stott is the sort to keep things uncomplicated in the mud. Available at 9/2, she looks the value against one or two less streetwise rivals. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Secret Of Life is the straight win bet because she sets the form standard and has the profile of a filly who can progress again at three. For an each-way punt, Borjina makes more appeal than the shorter-priced alternatives given her recent win and race fitness. Pointe Bleu is the main danger if improving as expected, while Shushu is the unknown quantity worth respecting on debut.

15:30 – Team Effort Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This is a proper 3yo sprint handicap rather than a penalty kick, even if Lion Of Mali arrives with the most persuasive profile. James Fanshawe’s colt has been progressing in the right way and deserved favouritism, but this ground asks a different question and there are a few lurking dangers at workable prices. Supreme Clarets has the inside draw and bits of solid form that read well in a race of this nature, while Euphonia comes here off a win and still looks capable of better. Eduardo Calderon also shaped nicely on his return and isn’t easily dismissed. In truth, this is a slightly tricky puzzle rather than a deep race, and I’d much rather back one at the prices against the obvious favourite for win purposes while keeping the market leader firmly on side as a danger.

Top Selections

1. Supreme Clarets – 5/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 236-74 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 68

Supreme Clarets looks the value play. He was placed a couple of times last season from marks in this region and his latest fourth suggested he is coming to the boil at the right time. Stall 1 could be a real asset over this testing 6f if Shane Gray can hold a handy position and keep things uncomplicated. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of Lion Of Mali, but he has enough substance to his form and an opening mark of 76 is perfectly workable. At 5/1, he appeals as the one who may be underestimated in a race where the ground could level things up a touch. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Eduardo Calderon – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kaiya Fraser | Trainer: Harry Eustace | Form: 387-2 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 72

Eduardo Calderon makes plenty of each-way appeal after his encouraging return, when finishing second on his first start since being gelded. That run hinted there is more to come, and Harry Eustace’s horses are often well placed in these handicaps when they begin to find their level. He has the same mark as Lion Of Mali, so there is no obvious handicap edge, but he does arrive less exposed than some and the market may not have fully caught up with him yet. If he builds on that comeback effort, 9/2 is fair enough in a 12-runner race paying four places. He looks a sound each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Supreme Clarets is the win bet at 5/1, chiefly because he has solid handicap form and could get a lovely run from the inside on very testing ground. Eduardo Calderon is the each-way option with four places on offer after a promising reappearance. Lion Of Mali is the obvious danger and very hard to leave out of calculations, while Euphonia is another who commands respect.

16:03 – No Sport Without A Surface Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This looks a small but interesting novice, though not one bursting with depth. The market is telling a pretty clear story around Charted Course, and in a six-runner 2yo race at this stage of the season that usually deserves respect, especially for the Fahey yard. Walt and Regal Tiger are the obvious dangers among the newcomers, while Keep Kicking On at least has the benefit of experience after a modest debut. The ground is likely to be a major factor here: six furlongs on soft, heavy in places at Haydock can find out anything lacking strength or professionalism. That makes this less of a flashy speed test and more a race for a juvenile who can cope with conditions and see it out properly. Tricky enough underneath, but the favourite does set the standard on expectation.

Top Selections

1. Charted Course – 1/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

He is very hard to oppose on stable reputation and market strength alone. Fahey knows the job with early juveniles and when one of his is sent off around even-money in a race lacking solid form, it usually means plenty is expected. Stall 1 should be no bad thing if he breaks smartly, and this stiff enough six furlongs in testing ground ought to suit a colt with a bit of substance rather than pure dash. There are risks, of course, because he has yet to see a racecourse, but this does not look an especially deep novice and 1/1 could still prove fair if he is as straightforward as the betting suggests. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Keep Kicking On – 8/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Rossa Ryan | Trainer: Clive Cox | Form: 8 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 34

He was only eighth on debut, so there is no pretending the bare form is exciting, but in a race where most of these are completely unexposed, that first run at least gives him something to build on. Cox can improve one plenty from an initial outing and the booking of Rossa Ryan catches the eye in a small field where tactical sharpness matters. The key angle is experience on attritional ground: if a couple of the shorter-priced newcomers fail to handle conditions, Keep Kicking On could easily pick up the pieces. At 8/1, he makes more each-way appeal than some of the sexier debutants because he has already had one educational spin. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Charted Course is the win bet and looks the one with the most obvious upside in a race lacking established form. For an each-way punt, Keep Kicking On makes more sense than the other newcomers because he has racecourse experience and could nick a place if the ground turns this into a slog. Walt and Regal Tiger are the chief dangers if ready first time.

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This looks a proper 3yo sprint handicap rather than a penalty kick, and the ground is the great complicating factor. Haydock over 6f on soft, heavy in places, can turn this into a test of grit as much as speed, so bare ratings may not tell the whole story. Woolisle returns after ending last year with a win and is the obvious one to beat, while Stoneacre Joe has done little wrong in two runs this term and should be in the thick of it again. From The Hip arrives on a hat-trick and has the figures to suggest he belongs at this level, while Showtown and There’s A Chance both have form that puts them right in the argument. Tricky, competitive, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Stoneacre Joe – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ryan Sexton | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 9-22 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 61

He looks the solid one in a race full of ifs. Stoneacre Joe has finished second on both starts this season and those runs suggest he is knocking very loudly on the door now handicaps are beginning to make sense for him. An opening mark of 82 asks a question, but not an impossible one, and Tim Easterby’s sprinters are often worth following when they start to string good efforts together. Draw 4 is no nuisance and Ryan Sexton is a positive booking for a race where track position could matter on this ground. At 5/1, he makes plenty of appeal as the percentage call. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Showtown – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Form: 223-20 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 70

I’m prepared to forgive the latest run, because his earlier profile gives him a squeak at a fair price. Showtown was consistent as a juvenile, shaped well when second on his reappearance, and his Topspeed mark of 70 is one of the better pieces of evidence on offer in this field. Kevin Ryan knows the time of day with these sprint handicappers and Kevin Stott is exactly the sort you want in a scrappy 6f race at Haydock when conditions are attritional. He has enough pace to hold a position from stall 3 and 15/2 looks a workable each-way punt in a race where plenty have something to prove. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Stoneacre Joe is the win play because his recent form is the most dependable and he looks ready to cash in. Showtown is the each-way alternative at 15/2, with four places on offer making plenty of sense in a 13-runner handicap. Woolisle is the obvious danger, while From The Hip is another who can’t be dismissed if handling these testing conditions.

17:13 – First In, Last To Leave Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: 2.00 +39yds, 2.30 +19yds and 3.00 & 3.30 +6yds) (Soft, heavy in places (goingstick 4.4) (inner course) (rail movements) | | flat

This is only a six-runner sprint but it is not lacking in intrigue, with the market understandably focusing on the unexposed pair Wheels Of Fire and Trilby. The former is a 4yo with scope and comes from a yard well capable of placing one in the right spot, while Trilby is a confirmed 5f operator who should be suited by a proper test in the mud. Brummell also enters the argument after a solid return, and he has the figures to make this competitive. By contrast, The Bell Conductor and Isle Of Lismore look like older sprinters who need to roll back the years. In a small field on soft, heavy in places, raw pace matters less than balance, stamina and who handles conditions best. Tricky enough, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Trilby – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Sam England | Form: 4-8526 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 85

Trilby looks the percentage call in a race where proven 5f grit could count for plenty. He is attractively treated at the weights, carries only 125, and his recent form has been better than the bare figures suggest, particularly the second two starts ago when he showed he still retains plenty of dash. This is a horse who should appreciate a searching five on testing ground more than some of these, and stall 1 could help him hold a handy position if breaking on terms. At 13/8 he is hardly a hidden gem, but he makes plenty of sense in a race lacking depth beyond the obvious trio. Bet type: win.

Bet: WIN

2. Brummell – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Ryan Sexton | Trainer: Julie Camacho | Form: 1107-3 | Rating: 97 | Topspeed: 83

Brummell makes most appeal as the each-way play because he has already shown he can be competitive from this sort of mark and his reappearance third was a fair effort after a break. He is the highest-rated runner in the field on 97, which gives him a solid platform in a race where class may tell once they hit the rising ground late on. Julie Camacho’s sprinters are often tough and straightforward, and Ryan Sexton should have him close enough from stall 6 to make his presence felt. At 9/2, he looks the value against the shorter-priced pair if this turns into a proper scrap rather than a speed test. Bet type: each-way.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Trilby is the win bet because he looks well set up for a stiff, testing 5f and gets in with a handy weight. Brummell is the each-way alternative in this six-runner field, offering a bit more value and arriving off a decent comeback run. Wheels Of Fire is the obvious danger if taking a step forward, but he is short enough in a race where conditions could expose any weakness.
