Top weights are usually worth opposing in 4m handicap chases at Hexham with the score in the past ten years standing at 0-22 (expected winners = 2.69). We have four runners on 12 stone in this marathon contest and I’m taking them on with Planned Paradise, who appreciated the drop to Class 4 level when scoring comfortably at Bangor last time. The faster ground won’t be an issue, he earned a sectional times upgrade for his latest win and Christian Williams’ long travellers usually do well in handicap chases during the second half of the season (January to April), with those travelling more than 125 miles from their Welsh base landing 43 of their 178 starts (24.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £64.39 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 33.29, A/E = 1.29). Shighness, 7lb lower than when going down narrowly in this race last year, could prove to be the chief threat.

Michael Bell’s Blues And Royals looks a likely improver on the back of a gelding operation and is worth chancing on his handicap debut. His trainer is 25 from 86 (29.1% strike-rate) with newly gelded runners on their handicap debuts for a profit of £47.38 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 15.14, A/E = 1.65). The score at Kempton only is four from seven (+£5.00) and it looks significant that he prepped over a shorter trip here last time out, finishing an outpaced 18-1 third in a 7f maiden.
