There is a good chance that an opening handicap mark of 72 wildly underestimates the ability of Richard Hannon’s GRAND SCHEME especially once he tackles slightly further but today’s good to soft ground may be difficult to find and these conditions look spot-on for the three-year-old. He is unexposed after just three starts but he has bumped into three potentially useful rivals and the form of his second at Goodwood has worked out well on the first attempt at this 1m. He was below par at Bath on his final start as a two-year-old but is worth chancing on this reappearance on the balance of his form.

HEADINGLEY – (3.50 Goodwood, 1pt win – 9/4)
Joe Fanning can dictate matters from the front here at a course he rides so well at on HEADINGLEY and rack up the hatrick of victories. The three-year-old looks a powerful horse and negotiated a penalty with ease at Redcar last time after Ben Curtis only did what was needed to score cosily. He looks as though he could progress through the handicap ranks nicely and this is a good bit of placing with no other obvious pace setters.

GLASSES UP – (4.05 Musselburgh, 1pt win – 9/4)
GLASSES UP looks a good bit of value at the prices over his two rivals in this small event and one in which I hope Jason Hart will take the initiative and make all of the running as he has done in the past. The selection was on a steep upward curve last term and holds the strongest form lines in this contest. A mark of 88 is certainly not beyond him and this trip of 1m4f could bring out further improvement. Dubai Souq has plenty to prove to be capable off of this mark of 92 and Mukhayyam although well-weighted, has been on the downgrade for some time.
