JOHNNY DRAMA – (1.50 York, 1pt each-way – 9/1)
This is far easier than the Sky Bet handicap that JOHNNY DRAMA is entered in on Saturday, so despite the top weight, he still looks like the one to beat, with most of these three-year-olds lacking the quality to rise to his level. He ran with credit at Goodwood on ground that would have been too slow for him, but even that form is much stronger than today’s race.
The return to the scene of his John Smiths Cup win is a big positive given his record at this venue of 1622 in again much stronger races than this. He is off the same mark as his latest Goodwood fourth, and the return to a sounder surface is another tick in the right box. His record on good ground here at York reads 122, and the step-up in trip for which he is a three-time winner on the all-weather is another reason to see him continue on this upward curve. He can’t go unbacked.

CORMIER (1:50pm York, 0.5pt each-way – 22/1)
CORMIER may not have the ability to win a race like this, but he is very interesting back on turf and his latest effort at Newcastle when held up in a slowly run race can be forgiven (AW Record reads 0-7).
He was a gutsy winner here on his penultimate start travelling powerfully through the race and fending off two subsequent winners in second and third. He looks well-treated still on that evidence off of just four pounds higher, and he can hit the frame with many paying extra places (4 or 5).

LUSAIL – (3.00 York, 1pts win – 5/2)
LUSAIL has looked right out of the top draw, and the form of his July Stakes win at Newmarket could not have worked out any better. Although he may have been flattered by his track position, there were a widening three lengths back to Eldrick Jones, whose form ties in with Berkshire Shaddow, and he still looked green in the closing stages.
The runner-up scored in a Goodwood Group 2 while the fourth landed a Group 1 in Ireland next time out. A prominent racer who stays further and has a smart turn off foot, he is the form horse in this race, and his price looks generous.

EMARAATY ANA – (3.35 York, 0.5pt each-way – 50/1)
This looks wide open with the absence of Battaash, and there have been a few turn-ups in this race before, so a chance is taken on EMARAATY ANA at a big price. He dropped in grade to score impressively at Hamilton last time, but he was only a shade (00.4s) off of the course record, and he is unexposed over 5f on quick ground with form figures of 1, 3 (beaten 1/2 a length), 0 (before wind surgery) and 1.
The track, trip and ground all like spot-on, and he is another prominent racer drawn straight down the middle. He is still improving, and with ground concerns for Suesa and the unknown factor with Golden Pal, he is entitled to run a big race.

SEA LA ROS – (4.40 York, 2pt win – 4/1)
It would be a surprise if SEA LA ROSA was not in the mix at the business end here. Achelois is a horse we know well, and she may have stolen the race off a prominent position at Goodwood and has questions to answer off a mar of 92 with that form let down since. The Weld horse doesn’t look well treated at all, while the rest of these other than Jewel In My Crown is exposed.
However, that one takes a big step up in grade. The selection was comfortably on top of two good horses in a three runner event at Recar last time. She also shaped well when second in a race that has worked out well at Doncaster prior, and she is improving with each run. This mark will be left behind sooner rather than later, and she looks the one to be on here.

ROYAL FLEET – (5.10 York, 1pt win – 7/2)
This is a belter, but ROYAL FLEET looked green as grass when scoring on the wrong side of the track at Newmarket last time against more experienced rivals, and it won’t be long before he is contesting group races, so this 7lbs rise shouldn’t stop him.
He is still raw, but a powerful horse and only one other winner came down that side of the track that day. He has built on each run, and this flat track with a long home straight will really suit him. He is exciting.

RIFLEMAN – (5:10pm York,1pt win – 9/1)
It’s worth having a cover bet in here just in case the big field scenario scars the above selection, and that’s with RIFLEMAN. The gelding operation looked to have worked the oracle at Newmarket last time when better than the bare result behind a rejuvenated Accidental Agent.
He pulled extremely hard for much of the race and then was denied a clear run before finishing with running left. He is very talented, and Ryan Moore jumps back on for the first time since being thrown off at Sandown, and that could prove significant. He cantered all over a very good field at Newmarket, and he is surely better than this 2lbs higher mark of 95.
