DARK JEDI – (3.10 Musselburgh, 2pts win – 7/2)
DARK JEDI bounced right back to form last time at Ripon, and he looks the way to go dropped in grade against more exposed rivals. That was an excellent weight carrying performance at Ripon, and he is still well-handicapped on his previous form.
His Haydock run on his penultimate start can be easily forgiven on soft ground, and this is the first time he has dropped back into a class 3 since scoring at Ripon in July last year. That took his tally in Class 3 or lower to 2 wins from 5 starts, with the other three coming behind, Top Rank (now 30lbs higher), Khuzaam (now 27lbs higher) and on his first start for Tim Easterby. He is worth siding with in this contest against inferior rivals.

PRINCE EIJI – (3.20 Thirsk, 1pt win – 11/4)
A competitive conditions race and one in which PRINCE EIJI is fancied to claim victory. The five-year-old ran as well as can be expected last time at Ascot in the Queen Anne after running too freely, but he is best judged on his previous run at the same venue in the trial race in which he was narrowly denied by Oh This Is Us.
The drop to 7f could be a slight inconvenience, but he has a good piece of course form here in a similar event at this time last year when chasing home Dream Castle. This race looks as though it will set up for a strong stayer with Lord Of The Lodge and Azano both likely to force the early pace, which will help the selection settle better and hopefully see him finish strongest of all.

MAKRAM – (6.38 Newmarket, 2pts win – 9/4)
Most of these have done their winning while MAKRAM has been crying out for this trip for some time, and it’s to his credit he had the pace to win at Sandown last time and a 6lbs rise doesn’t look enough to stop him going in again.
He is proven on the undulations of Newmarket, is completely unexposed as a stayer and the form of the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar in which he was an unlucky second could not have worked out better. He looks a 100 horse in the making, especially over this new trip which can see him continue his improvement, so he gets the vote.

DANCINGINTHEWOODS – (7.38 Newmarket, 1pt win – 11/4)
This could be tricky, but DANCINGINTHEWOODS has built up a good record at Newmarket and ran a blistering time figure last term to think that 6f could see him improve. That has been the case, and the form of his four runs over 6f this term, has worked out remarkably well, including the latest when beating a subsequent Stewards Cup Consolation winner cosily.
That was a career-best performance, and he is entitled to build on that again with William Buick another eye-catching booking. He is only 2lbs higher here, and that looks exploitable.
