Hazzaar – (11.55 Doncaster, 2pts win – 5/2)

Predictably the market has put the Nicky Henderson horse Hooper in as favourite here but he is worth taking on with HAZZAAR who ran a blinder on seasonal return at Cheltenham from an unpromising position. He was held-up in what was a slowly run race but did the best of those who sat off the gallop as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all were ridden prominently and filed those same finishing positions. The front eight finished well clear of the remainder and of that eight, the fifth (the selection), the sixth, the seventh and eighth were all held up and did well to finish as close as they did (within 5 lengths). The only horse of those to run has been the eighth, Hydroplane, who won next time out by 5 ½ lengths and is now 5lb higher. The ninth ran well and faded late on but he placed next time out and of those ridden prominently, the second horse, One True King, has since won again. Hazzaar, is only 2lb higher here and takes a drop in grade into 0-120 company and meets some exposed rivals and the market looks to have overestimated the chances of Xcitations who benefitted from a ridiculously strong pace at Huntingdon last time so the selection looks excellent value.

Fanion D’Estruval – (1.50 Cheltenham, 1pt win – 5/1)

Venetia Williams is ticking over nicely at the moment and it won’t be long before she hits her seasonal peak so a chance is taken on FANION D’ESTRUVAL. I fancied him on return when second behind Magic Saint but I also had a slight concern that 2m4f maybe his trip, so today is the day to find out. He looks fairly priced given others has plenty of question marks to answer at present and this young and improving horse is entitled to take a step forward from his return run 28 days ago. Mister Fisher sets the standard on his Marsh 4th but I can’t have the excuse of the ground for his return run and there may be a question mark over the stable’s runners at the moment given Sandown last Saturday.

Commodore– (2.25 Cheltenham, 1pt win – 13/2)

The Irish mare is of great interest here and could be thrown in but her best form has come on right-handed tracks and she hasn’t been missed by the market so it may be worth siding with front runner COMMODORE. The eight-year-old recorded an excellent time figure at Haydock last month when second to the improving Snow Leopardess and it was only bettered on the day by Master Tommy Tucker and Bristol De Mai (in the closing stages). A repeat of that effort here will almost certainly be enough to suffice now race-fit. He is lightly raced for his age and gets weight from most of the field so could prove hard to peg back if getting a soft lead on the front end with Black Corton likely to be ridden with patient tactics under this weight.

Come On Teddy – (3.35 Cheltenham, 1pt each-way – 11/1)

None of these is extremely well handicapped so it may pay to take a chance on COME ON TEDDY who travelled through the race on seasonal return at Uttoxeter like this mark was well within reach. That race was run at a good clip (faster than 2m4f final circuit) and a mistake at the second last flight saw his lack of fitness exposed but with that run under his belt, he is entitled to take a step forward. Today will be just his second start over this trip and only his third in Handicap Company and he sits just 5lb above his Market Rasen romp at the back end of last season. He could pick up the progressive thread from last term now race fit and receives plenty of weight all round including 23lbs from the classy favourite On The Blind Side.
