SKATMAN – (1.10 Cheltenham, 2pts win – 10/3 Will Hills)
There is little doubt that one of our horses to follow SKATMAN has been let in lightly for his handicap bow, especially given the third from Newton Abbot bolted up off a mark of 113 next time and is now rated 118.
The runner-up was a winner for this column on Wednesday in Yggdrasil over fences and it probably wasn’t ideal that Skatman made the running on that occasion. It’s also highly likely that that 2m trip was sharp enough for him on the evidence of his Musslebrugh win back in March and he holds excellent point to point form over 3m beating Barbados Buck’s and Lieutenant Rocco who are both 140 rated horses.
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that this mark is very leneint and Lorcan Williams’ claim makes him even more appealing. He is due to go up three pounds through collateral form so he is effectively six pounds well in here and the new 2m5f trip is sure to see about improvement.
His price is skinny enough at 11/4 but given our horses to follow video did call the fact he would win a Novice race and get a low 120’s mark that could be exploited he is hard to pass over.

ART APPROVAL – (1.10 Cheltenham, 1pt each-way – 11/2 Betfair)
This is not deep outside of the top of the market and it’s hard to see ART APPROVAL out of the five places on offer with most bookmakers on the back of an excellent fourth here last month.
That race knocked 3 seconds off of the course record and although he was beaten 10 lengths it still goes down as a good run. He is 1lb lower here and up slightly in trip but he was very keen on return to action which saw his effort peter out at the finish.
He could prove a different proposition now race-fit and this is much easier on paper for him for which inclusive of the jockey claim he is now 4lb lower. He has run three good races at this venue and theres no reason why he won’t run a fourth.

HOWDYALIKEMENOW – (4.00 Cheltenham, 1.5pts each-way – 9/1 Betfair)
HOWDYALIKEMENOW has impressed since joining Evan Williams winning back to back Novice Hurdles in quick succession including defying a penalty at Fakenham last time on a track that he would have found sharp enough for him.
He recorded good time figures on both occasions. The first married up well with the 2m2f race on the card won by Samba Dancer and he was 24 lengths faster than the Juvenile race on the card and 29.88 lengths faster than the bumper on the card. The form was also given a healthy boost by the runner-up who bolted up by 9 lengths next time at Kempton from Midnights Legacy.
The third also bolted up at Ludlow in a handicap off 109 and is now rated 114. He then gave 15lbs to Auditoria despite the track not suiting and that form line ties in with City Derby who is shorter in today’s market and that form makes this opening mark of 122 look leneint.
Those two runs were his first on good ground after shaping nicely on deep ground in Ireland including a good sixth behind Gaillard Du Mesnil at Leopardstown last December. Today’s stiffer track on handicap debut will certainly suit and he looks very much over-priced in a race that has favoured five-year-olds in the last five runnings.
