REPUBLICAN would have registered his second win over hurdles if not for coming down at the last at Perth in April, and he shaped very well on two occasions over fences this time last year. He faces much weaker opposition today off this potentially lenient handicap mark of 121 and looks handicapped to go well on the balance of his form.
His fourth at Ascot on chase debut reads well. The winner is 20lbs higher in the handicap, the runner-up is 20lbs higher in the handicap, and the fourth is 10lbs higher while he is 2lbs lower. The heavy ground at Fontwell wasn’t ideal next time, but he bumped into a horse that is now 14lbs higher in the handicap (2nd selection), and the fourth is 24lbs higher.
His runner-up effort on his penultimate start at Haydock over hurdles when a powerful finisher reads well in the context of this race, and he did best of those ridden widest of all and from the rear of the field.
He has some strong Novice Hurdle form to back up his recent efforts, and going back over fences on today’s sounder surface is a big positive down into a class 4 for just the second time since being a Novice (heavy ground as a novice). He looks well treated here and, if fit and well, should make his presence felt.

MISTER MURCHAN – (3.35 Warwick, 1pt win – 3/1 Will Hills)
A form line that ties in with the above is MISTER MURCHAN, who has been keeping much warmer company than he faces on return today and drops back into class 4 company.
He is 5lbs above his last winning handicap mark, but he returns to a left-handed track for the first time since beating the above mentioned Republican by 12 lengths at Fontwell. He is lightly raced over fences after just six starts (2 wins), and the drop back in trip for his seasonal return looks a good move.
Two of his three career wins have come left-handed, and he has only had five runs going this way around over obstacles. He could have more to offer today.
