MY FRANKEL – (3.05 Ascot, 2pts win – 7/2)
A small field and a true pace on offer courtesy of the short-priced favourite Love Is Golden, who had the run of the race at Hamilton and was flattered to finish as close as he did to the winner. Recovery Run needs soft ground to be seen to best effect, and the Protected Guest saves his best for Yarmouth while Bugle Major was exposed at Newmarket last time.
MY FRANKEL has promised a lot but has failed to deliver, although there was more encouragement last time at York when staying on strongly from the rear of the field in a race where those on the front end dominated it.
That was his first attempt back on a sounder surface since scoring in a Maiden at Leicester last season, and the handicapper has dropped him 2lbs for the run. In races of nine or fewer runners, his record reads 111 and reverting to this smaller field should see him to best effect. He has conditions to suit and will see this trip out strongly for last years winning trainer and gets a good vote of confidence.

FANTASTIC FOX – (3.40 Ascot, 2pts win – 9/4)
Uncle Bryn comes with risks attached after 113 days off the track and a gelding operation, and this could be a prep run for the Cambridgeshire at the end of the month. That was the case with the yards runner at Goodwood, so I am inclined to take him on with FANTASTIC FOX.
He won at Haydock last time in spite of the soft ground, and a return to a quicker surface will suit. He has progressed all season and was a big eye-catcher off a 6lbs lower mark over this straight course when given too much to do off a slow pace behind Guru.
This is far easier outside of the questionable favourite, and he looks like a potential group horse of the future. It’s hard to get his excellent 3rd to Snow Lantern at Newbury out of mind, and he really should be better than these.

ALJARI 0- (4.10 Ascot, 1pt each-way – 10/1)
A chance is taken on ALJARI, who finished strongly at Yarmouth last month off the back of a break and a wind surgery off a 1lbs higher mark and gets the services of a useful claimer in Christian Howarth.
He is completely unexposed on the turf after just two runs, and inclusive of the jockey claim, is 13lbs below his last winning all-weather handicap mark, and he has only had two runs since over 6f. This is also a drop in grade, so a chance is taken.

DARK SHIFT – (4.45 Ascot, 1pt win – 6/1)
DARK SHIFT needs quick ground, so the fact that he scored at Nottingham on a soft surface marked him down as one to follow when back on a sounder surface. In June, he was drawn poorly at York off an opening handicap mark of 88 but caught the eye staying on under hand and heels over 6f.
He has then run on soft ground the next twice without being disgraced, but 7f on good to firm ground looks his ideal conditions. He gets that today for the first time, and this is a far easier task than he has had previously. He is well worth another chance off this handicap mark of 84 down into a class 4 for the first time.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ – (6.00 Pontefract, 1pt each-way – 8/1)
STRAIT OF HORMUZ has been frustrating, but this drop back to 1m could see him to good effect here at Pontefract. On paper, this is an easier assignment than his three-length defeat to Migration at York last time, and he got no run on that occasion and had to switch wide of the field to come down the outside when those that finished ahead of him had a clear straight path down the rail.
That performance deserves an upgrade, and a 1lb drop from the handicapper is a welcome sign. He will be ridden prominently today with the drop back in trip, and he deserves to get his head back in front.
