SWORD SPIRIT (12.30 Lingfield, 1.5pts win 15/8)
With the absence of original selection Calin’s Lad, the clear next best SWORD SPIRIT gets a very confident vote to land the spoils on the back of an excellent figure at Kempton.
The three-year-old took a good step forward for her seasonal debut at Doncaster on soft ground when sent to the London venue and she makes the quick switch to handicap company off what looks a very lenient opening mark of 64.
She was on the sharp end of the pace throughout a speedily run race (faster than Amniarix winning off 77 in the next race) at Kempton and made the long odds-on favourite (rated 84) pull out all the stops. If they were to meet again on these terms she would be in receipt of 20lb from the winner for a ¾-length defeat and given her unexposed nature she is entitled to improve again.
She is drawn well in stall five and there looks to be no obvious reason she shouldn’t improve past some exposed handicappers at the first time of asking.

SILVER SNIPER (4.55 Newcastle, 0.5pts each-way 33/1)
It will take a leap of faith to back SILVER SNIPER but you can easily put a line through his last three starts (two in handicaps) given they all came at marmite track Southwell.
He clearly hated that surface shown by only beating one rival home rated 38 and, although excuses are wearing thin, his only other start this autumn/winter had come on soft ground at Redcar.
He showed some smart form in novice company earlier this year on good ground and here at Newcastle on debut and he has effectively been dropped 12lb in the handicap to a mark of 57.
This new trip of 6f along with the return to Newcastle and first-time blinkers are reasons to expect an improved performance. He is not one for maximum faith but at least has conditions to suit and is dropped into a Class 6 0-60 for the first time.
