THE RUSSIAN DOYEN (1.30 Catterick, 1pt win 7/2)
Mick Maestro is interesting off the same mark as his promising effort at Doncaster two weeks ago providing he feels no ill effects from a heavy fall and can translate his Doncaster form to this new venue.
The value, however, lies with class-dropper THE RUSSIAN DOYEN who also comes here on the back of a fall, but over fences. He shaped with plenty of encouragement at Fontwell on seasonal return in this sphere when third in a competitive handicap behind Chirico Vallis (140) before a below-par effort in the highly competitive Paddy Power Gold Cup back over fences.
He was travelling strongly on his latest start over the larger obstacles at Newbury before taking off too early in a much stronger race than the one he faces today. He sits on a fair mark of 135, drops back to 2m and this race represents his easiest task for some time. He gets the vote back over hurdles under Harry Cobden who has just the one ride on the card.

DELTA WORK (2.25 Leopardstown, 1pt each-way 6/1)
This is an outstanding race and the winner will be highly touted for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with quotes flying around immediately after, but history has hinted that it’s the placed horses that need more attention.
Many are open to improvement now stepping up to 3m for the first time but DELTA WORK showed up well on his reappearance at Down Royal before fitness told in the closing stages and his record suggests that he will improve for the run.
He clearly likes it here at Leopardstown with his course form figures reading 1114, including two Grade 1 victories over fences (this race last year) and one Grade 1 over hurdles.
He was better than the bare result in the Gold Cup on his penultimate start and he has had many of these in behind previously. Conditions look set for a big run and providing his jumping has improved (looked better at Down Royal) he is the one I want to side with.
